Squid & Ink - CLOSED

I had a damn good burrito here yesterday. I had an hour to kill waiting on the bus and remembered this place. I had gone to a show there several months ago, and had always meant to come back when they were more in restaurant-mode (they move all the tables out when they have shows.) It was nice. The girl who took my order was friendly, but yeah, as some other reviewers pointed out, the service wasn't terribly hand-holding. I can see some people being put off by the grindcore soundtrack, but I like stuff like that, so it was a plus for me. They had fairly interesting art hanging, and a rack of punk zines to read. The food came out quick, and was really good. The other stuff on the menu looked really good (except the vegan poutine, I tried that the last time I was here and wasn't that impressed). I'd definitely come here way more often if it wasn't all the way in Georgetown.

This place was great. Fast, friendly service and they have a good amount of vegetarian stuff, which I wasn't really expecting. I got the veggie chorizo plate. It was really good, although I've never had real chorizo so I don't know how it measures up. The place was packed and felt a little chaotic, but it wasn't in a bad way. If I lived in Austin, I'd go there all the time.

Bear Tooth Theatre Pub & Grill

Earlier tonight, I was reminiscing with some fellow ex-alaskans about what we missed about Anchorage, and the first thing out of everyone's mouth was the Bear Tooth. It's just such a good experience on so many different levels.

-You can see movies for three dollars.
-The food is really good.
-It's vegetarian-friendly (the turnagain tofu burrito is my favorite)
-If you want something cheap and fast, they've got it on the theatre side.
-If you want something a bit fancier, they've got it on the grill side.
-I don't drink, but apparently the beer is great. (they brew their own)
-They play late-run movies as well as a lot of really interesting indie stuff.

Do I need to go on? I could, but I'm pretty sure I've proved my point :)

Good cheap tacos, went there for breakfast this morning. Usually breakfast-mexican ain't my thing, but this was damn tasty. They also have diet dr. pepper in the soda fountain (which might be common in Austin but not where I'm from). All in all, Woot!

Going to this guy is the hands-down best dental experience I've ever had. I actually looked forward to my appointments. Too bad I moved across the country, so I can't go anymore (although he's so good I thought about making trips back to Boston JUST to get check-ups). Dr. Ken should clone himself and set up franchises.

This isn't so much a review of this restaurant as it is a word of caution that can and probably should be applied everywhere.

The food here is really pretty good, and the atmosphere is fairly decent, for a chain restaurant. But when we got our bill, something didn't seem quite right about it. After we took a good look, we realized they overcharged us by $50 bucks!  I can see accidentally charging one thing  that we didn't really order, there were about 7 things on there that no one had ordered. We're lucky it was so much, because if it was just one or two things, we might not have caught it.  I'm really bad at math, and we weren't a small party (6 people), so I thought my addition skills were just way, way off. The waitress sorted it out for us, and we ended up paying the right amount, but it was a pretty ridiculous oversight in the first place. But I'm willing to forgive that, as it was New Year's eve, so I'm sure the overcharging was most likely due to the general craziness going on that night. I won't say anything else about the service because it's probably not fair given the circumstances.

Even after we got the price down to what we actually ordered, it still felt a little expensive for what it was. This place strikes me as somewhere that people who don't get out much go when they want to do something fancy, but don't have any idea what exactly that entails. It's not really bad by any means, but hopefully anyone reading a site like yelp can get steered in a better direction than this.

I went here for lunch today because a co-worker told me they had tons of vegetarian stuff and the truffle fries were to die for. Turned out to be wrong on both counts, but that's ok, because it had enough other redeeming qualities.

They have a pretty small menu, and only a couple things on it were vegetarian. I got the crispy-tofu baguette. It didn't look like much when I got it, just some bread and tofu. But it surprised me when I took a bite, in a good way. There were some fresh vegetables tucked way down in the baguette that gave a nice contrast to the tofu, which was just the right kind of crispy. The bread was just chewy enough, but not hard. I give it a high-five for texture alone.

I was excited about the truffle fries because of the ballyhooing I had heard and, well, they just sounded really fancy. I gotta say I was a little disappointed. I'm all about the sauce when it comes to fries, and the truffle-oil this stuff was dripping with wasn't cutting it. They weren't terrible, just nowhere near as good as the sandwich.

On the whole it was good stuff. I'm definitely going back.

Sonobana Japanese Restaurant

Some friends of mine go to Sonobana every christmas eve (not sure why, maybe it's the only place open?) Anyways, things got off to a bad start by them putting our reservation in the smoking section. I guess it was our fault for not specifying, but it seems weird for someone to just assume that we'd be ok with it. I hadn't been in a restauant with a smoking section for a while, and was struck by how strong the smell was, even though when we got there no one was smoking. It kinda smelled like feet. Mmmmm feet and sushi, there's a magic combo.

For the most part, the food was decent, I suppose. At least all my friends seemed to like what they got. There wasn't too much vegetarian stuff on the menu, so I ended up getting something called an Erika Roll that was described on the menu as "cucumber, avocado & crunchies". Yes, crunchies. Apparantly, "crunchies" is code for deep fried pencil shavings, and lots of 'em. After taking one bite, I coughed up a fine cloud of the tasteless fried sawdust that left me gasping for water. To be fair, I partly ordered it because it sounded kind of ridiculous, and I guess it didn't dissapoint on that level.

Luckily, a big part of what makes a meal is who you have it with, so the good company more than made up for the settings and food. That place has become somewhat of a tradition with my friends, and I only get to see them a couple times a year, so there's a good chance I'll end up there again next year. So long as I stay away from the crunchies and the smoking section, I guess I won't even complain too much.

I'm not sure how I grew up here and never managed to go to this place before. I always heard how great it was, but never felt like waiting in the perpetually long lines. So I was surprised to see it mostly empty when I was back visiting for xmas. I guess I got there at just the right time (around 2:15). After taking a look at the menu i immediatly started to kick myself for passing this place by so many times before. Usually, I can pretty quickly zero in on the one or two things I'm interested in on a menu. But here, just about everthing looked good, and I had a really hard time deciding. I ended up getting the sweet potato pancakes with powdered sugar and cinnamon syrup. Incredible. The sweetness got a little overwhelming towards the end, but that was my fault for going crazy with the syrup. I also tried the blueberry pancakes, which were less over-the-top but still just as delicious. I wish I was in town longer so I could go back and try some of the other stuff. I wonder how the non-pancake fare is? They had some omelettes that looked pretty tasty.

The only thing that i didn't really like was the service, which kind of made me feel like there was, in fact, a line of people around the block waiting to get in. Maybe it just becomes habit after a while? It wasn't bad, just felt a tad bit rushed.

I would recommend this place to anyone, and certainly go back, even if it means waiting in line forever to get a table.

I'm not a huge sushi fan. But I am a HUGE automated food-delivery fan, so this place rules. It'd be better if they had robots bring you your drinks though. But the food is actually really good as well. I'm usually only in the mood for sushi once a month or so, but somehow I ended up here twice this past weekend and totally enjoyed myself both times. If you're the easily distractable type (like I am) you might try to sit with your back to the big projector screen on the wall with the strangely-captivating city life in japan scenes. It'll suck you in and not let go if your not careful.

The only thing that I found annoying was that the hot food was only labeled as "hot food" whereas all the cold food was labeled with the name, how it was prepared, and if it was vegetarian. Most of it looked really good, but being a vegetarian, I had no clue if it was something I could eat or not, so I stayed away from it.
