El Pulgarcito de America Restaurant

My first experience with the food was when a co-worker brought some in for us to try one day. He had overheard another co-worker and me talking about how we were excited that this place was about to open because we'd never tried Salvadorean food before. So we got to try a few different kinds of papusa, along with a roast chicken and rice dish. The papusas were addictive, and the chicken was tender and well-spiced.
So I decided to order take out the other night, which was an adventure because the English of the lady who took my order was about as good as my Spanish (that is, muy malo). I ordered liver and onions and a papusa, but ended up with the beef steak and onions (I guess they thought the gringo wouldn't be into the liver. I'll make sure they get it right next time). Anyway, even though they didn't get my order right, the steak was very good and they were very generous with the onions.
The prices weren't half bad either. Overall, this is a very welcome addition to the "up over by the airport" area, and I'm looking forward to trying some more of their dishes (especially the soups on the weekends!)
Thaifoon is not:
- A Thai restaurant
- Authentic at all
- Cheap
Thaifoon is:
- A "pan-Asian" restaurant
- Totally and completely Americanized
- Probably a bit overpriced.
It seems like every review of the place I've read on here docks stars for what this place is not. If you want cheap, authentic Thai food, you have plenty of options.
That being said, sometimes I'm in the mood for totally Americanized Asian food, so I temporarily remove my food snobbery and go to Thaifoon. I enjoy the atmosphere, I've never had a problem with the service, and all the dishes I've had have been fresh and tasty. A standout for me is the sizzling surf and turf. Yes, it is basically an Asian seasoned fajita dish without tortillas but, you know, it's really good.
This is one of my favorite Gateway eating options.

My favorite part of Terminal D is the tortilla soup at the Reata Grill. I've been known to Skylink over from other terminals just to get some of it. I really couldn't tell you about the rest of the food on the menu because I've never had it (except the chips and salsa, which were pretty average). Maybe I could get them to give me the recipe at some point, because it can't be that hard to make, right? (But then they'd lose my business.)
I'm a fan of the wine list, because they always have a couple of interesting ones on there. Service is friendly but usually a bit slow. The price? A little expensive, but it's the airport.
So, um, try that soup.

My partner in crime and I decided to check this place out for brunch today after hearing a lot of positive buzz about it. I got the chicken and waffles (my first time having it!) and my boyfriend had the chicken fried steak and eggs. We both cleaned our plates, so it was obviously good. The chicken was tender and juicy with a nice batter, and they did a great job with the waffle as well. I appreciated the Southern cooking influence without the Southern-style overwhelming portions.
The service was a little slow, and I'm not sure the minimalist decor works for a comfort food place, but I'd definitely go back.
I ordered the mushroom swiss burger with smash fries. Unlike the others that reviewed, I received my burger quickly (and it was the one I ordered!) This was during dinner time, though, and the place wasn't mobbed like it appears to be during lunch.
The burger? All the ingredients tasted super fresh. The meat was delicious and I loved the garlic flavor of the mushrooms. The fries were just crispy enough, and the rosemary was a nice touch.
Yes, it set me back $10 with a drink, and for that I feel dirty. But it was really, really good.

This is the bar inside of the Millennium Broadway. They have an exceedingly overpriced breakfast that we did not check out, and then they serve appetizers and drinks the rest of the time.
We were staying in the hotel on our visit to NYC and went here several times to wind down before dinner or before bed. The prices for the drinks are extremely high, even by NYC standards, but they have a great selection of wines (including several varieties of port) and scotches, along with the usual stuff.
Service was always very friendly and all mixed drinks were done well. We never had any food other than the trail mix or whatever they put out for you, but it sounded pretty good. Atmosphere was nice and quiet, the chairs were very comfortable, and I was kind of amused to see PBS on the TV one time we were there. (A friend of mine now wants us to open up a PBS-only bar. I don't know how well that would do.)
Check it out if you're staying at the Millennium and are into the hotel bar thing.

The Millennium Broadway Hotel

The location was right in the middle of everything, but we were high enough up (25th floor) that it was very quiet. We had a great view of Broadway, and the location of the hotel made it convenient to most anything. The 42nd Street Subway stop could get us just about anywhere we needed to go.
The room was not huge, but wonderfully decorated. The bed was a bit harder than most hotel beds, but we both find normal hotel mattresses to be a little too soft, so we loved this one. I slept well every night.
We didn't have to deal with the hotel staff much, but when we did they were nice enough. And though overpriced, we thought the hotel bar (Charlotte) was a great place to wind down before dinner or before bed.
For the price we got, this is about as good as you can get in NYC.

It was our last night in New York, and my boyfriend and I were looking to get something a little off the beaten path after having been pwned by Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig on Broadway. You can't get Turkish food in Utah, so we decided to go here (despite the three star Yelp average).
We started with a nice Italian Pinot Grigio. Our waiter took awhile to get us an ice bucket for it, but that was my only complaint with the service.
I had the Lamb Adana, which was very tasty. Flavorful meat, perfect sized portion, and the onions and rice were very complimentary as side dishes. My boyfriend was looking for something a little lighter, so he got the cold appetizer platter, which was basically a bunch of dips to try. We found it a bit odd that they didn't serve it with pita or something, but the bread on the table was quite complimentary.
The atmosphere was quiet and comfortable, and the prices weren't half bad.
A nice way to end the trip.

Sushi Yasuda

Neighborhood: Midtown East
I made a reservation for my boyfriend and I with Chef Yasuda himself, since that's what you're supposed to do, right? First impression: I loved the minimalist interior and the quiet comfort of the place. I started with a little bit of sake (I can't remember the name, but it starts with a k, ends with an i, and it was so very good). My boyfriend was disappointed they didn't have wine on the menu, but was okay with settling with beer.
We each started with the 12 piece special and then yet Yasuda take charge. Highlights for me: oyster, scallop, sardine, the second of the fatty tunas Yasuda gave us, atlantic char roll, and the uni. I'd never had uni before, so I thought this was a good place to try. I don't think my boyfriend dealt with the uni so well, but I give him props for trying. He loved everything else, but especially the eel, fatty tuna, and the scallop.
I found it very interesting to hear from Chef Yasuda about the fish, where it came from and such. He did scold me for eating my nigiri upside-down. Apparently what I see on Iron Chef isn't always the right way to do things.
The focus here is the fish, and only the fish. Definitely different from the places I normally go where the focus is more on rolls. Don't get me wrong, I'll still love all of my other favorite sushi spots with all my heart, but it was great to have a more traditional sushi meal for a change.
At the end, Chef Yasuda asked, "To be continued?"
Sure, let me just find a way to get back to NYC. :)

Burger? Average. Tasty enough, but on the burnt side. Freshness comparable to a fast food joint.
Fries? Soggy.
Price? More than Wendy's, and I like everything at Wendy's better.
The food was certainly edible, and the service was fine. It's just that if I want something that tastes like a fast food burger, I can go to a fast food joint and not have to miss the 1st quarter of the Mavericks/Spurs game waiting for my burger.
