This is the place that my boyfriend and I go out to eat when it's Date Night with a capital "D" and yet we want a quiet, intimate evening. There are a few very good non-chain restaurants to be found in Cary if Macaroni Grill and Bonefish aren't up your alley (they aren't up ours, to be sure).
Located in the same little nook of a shopping center on Academy Street as the Blue Moon Bakery, there is parking a-plenty. The waitstaff is attentive but never overbearing. While the wine list may leave something to be desired if you're a bit of a wino about wine like I am, always always and I mean ALWAYS ask what they've got going on for dessert. The first time that we ate there I ordered the chocolate souffle. I thought perhaps I had made an error in judgment when nearly fifteen or twenty minutes had passed but once that little wonder appeared in front of me never had the old adage "Good things come to those who will wait" seemed so true.
The next time you nearly talk yourself into going to eat in one of those awful places in Crossroads, just as quickly talk yourself out of it and take a quick ten minute drive down to the lovely folks at Vespa.People thought this was:

Now that we have had a refresher on calling a spade a spade, I love the Goat for what it is. I had a brief run there when I found myself in bars more than I do now (I'm in divinity school now, and don't hit the bar scene like I once could) and the Goat was a good time. I was there about a month ago for a good time and an hour, and a beer. Not too much had seemed to have changed. With the revival of the downtown areas just a few miles down the road, which I am not at all against, we are up to our ears in elitist bars where you can go to spend eight bucks for a microbrew or fourteen for a martini. I'm good for that when the mood hits, but sometimes you aren't up for that; you don't want to be surrounded by boys that are prettier than you are, and so where in Raleigh can you go? I'll tell you where - the good old Goat.

My parents live off of 70 near this particular location, and some Goodwills are better than others depending on what you are looking for. For example, if you're looking for glassware, picture frames, or book, for some reason the one on Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh never disappoints. This one is sparse on the book selection most of the time but has one of the best selections of smaller furniture (bookshelves, plantstands, patio furniture). I've had outstanding luck with things like small luggage (Samsonite carry-on with the tags on it for four bucks) and vintage cups/dishes. Your experience may differ, but the fun is in the hunt.
I've been going here since the beginning of my undergrad years at State, so a good eight years or so now, when we want this "type" of food but don't have either the time or the cash to go to our regular eatery, Kabuki. For what it is, I think they do a great job.

I would imagine that it is incredibly difficult to staff; it is either very very busy or very very... not busy. (I'm talking about my own observations, from the hours of eleven-thirty and closing). There are usually only two people visible behind the bar to service the entire crowd, whatever that may be, so you may be there for a few minutes before greeted. Be prepared. The food is always worth it. Your service will be "eh," so don't be starving when you get there. Make your own fun. It's still a gem of a place in a world full to the brim of big box, run-of-the-mill, corporate entities. I'd prefer to frequent the former over the latter any day of the week.

I had forgotten about writing this review, honestly, in 2006, but always receive their postcards when they are having sales and during one of those got a wonderful small table. The four times I have been in since my first visit, three of which I have made it clear that I was not buying, I have always had wonderful help from the staff.

Extremely pricey.
Have you ever been in an art gallery and seen a painting of a dot or something equally inspired with a price tag in the thousands? That's what going to Nowell's is like. The things in the store are beautiful and well-made, but I only go for ideas. I'm just not in a place in my life where I'm going to spend four grand for a large slab of wood to put my mattress on, no matter what subliminal messages are in the background ambient music.
A very fun place to browse; just be certain to leave your wallet in the car for good measure. Show owner comment »People thought this was:

For some unknown reason, the Big Lots in little old Dunn, NC is practically the Holy Grail as far as Big Lots go. It is HUGE. The gardening and home improvement section is massive. They have as many CFLs as my local Lowe's or Ace Hardware, easily. As far as cleanliness, it's spotless.
About twice a semester I make the trek down there to load up on index cards, herbal tea, highlighters, CFLs and whatever other treasures may be unexpectedly in stock and I have never yet been disappointed.
