Bluwater Bistro

Category: American (New)

2 star rating
 10/30/2009
I would like to concur with some of the previous reviews.  When the 1st location of Bluwater Bistro opened on Lake Union 10 or so years ago, I ate there several times.  Their food was outstanding and very current with the times.  They had excellent garlic mashed potatoes with a small bite which may have been wasabi.  Their braised meats were all fantastic, the atmosphere was hip and lively, and service was good.  This summer, after not going to Bluwater for a couple of years, I wandered into the Lake Union location.  It was dirty, disorganized, and unfriendly.  Why we bothered to sit down, I will never understand.  We were presented with menus which have really gone down hill.  They looked like something Denny's would produce.  And after reading the menu, I truly believe Denny's did produce them.  They seem to be attempting comfort food but they want to charge top dollar.  I can't even remember what I ordered, it was some type of fish.  Very unmemorable.  My Beau had steak, overcooked and not a  very good cut.   I have been to the Greenlake location and they are still trying to be modern, that location is a little better.  I don't know what happened to Bluwater bistro, a divorce, a battle of the owners, but whatever happened has definitely affected their business in a very negative manner.

If you are ever in the North End of Seattle and looking for a place to kick back, listen to some great music on the juke box, and snack on some delicious food, this is your place.  The bar is located in the midst of a very high end neighborhood, there are no other businesses around.  It sits amongst multi million dollar homes.  I believe it was built in the early 1900's when this area was considered tourist and fishing.  When you walk in notice the crooked bar and the crooked floor.  On a rough night, you may think the Bartender should be cutting you off any time.  Apparently this is how the building settled and leaving it as it is gives this restaurant serious character.   The nachos are great, a little pricey but several people can share.  As for sandwiches, the meatloaf is my favorite.  It is definitely homemade and has a strong smokey flavor.  I have also tried the fish and it is simple, but good.  In the summer they have a large deck area where you can take in the cool ocean breeze.  Give this place a try, you won't be dissappointed.

Two Bells Tavern

Categories: Restaurants, Bars
Neighborhood: Belltown

4 star rating

I love 2 Bells for what it is.  It is perhaps the best, most comfortable bar that is a restaurant, in the Belltown area.  The food is good.  Try the tahini salad and get a side of bread with extra dressing.  That makes an excellent, not too heavy lunch.  Their burgers are really good too.  The only thing I don't like its they use the kind of bread that beats up the roof of your mouth, well worth it though.  The nicest thing about 2 Bells is the people.  Mainly the staff, they give excellent service with a personal touch.   Simply real people who want to please their guests.  And the customers........what a mix.  This is a very fun place to go for lunch, dinner, drinks or any time.

Cantinetta

Category: Italian
Neighborhood: Wallingford

I was in Cantinetta some time back.  Hopefully the menu is still the same as it was fabulous.  The pancetta wrapped figs were absolutely delightful.  We shared the mussels and the sauce was slightly sweet and very tasty, though I'm sure I put on 10 pounds just looking at it.  The only problem was getting enough bread to sop up all the broth.  We also had an assorted cheese plate to start which wasn't all that memorable.  The owner or matre d' did an excellent job of pairing a nice medium priced wine with our meal.  Finally we had a pasta dish which came highly recommended.   Once again, it was excellent.  The only downside to Cantinetta was noise level and space.  There tables seem to be very close together making it a little less romantic if that is what you are looking for.  All in all it is a great little neighborhood restaurant and I wish them well.

Medin's Ravioli Station

Medin's is a very relaxed and inexpensive restaurant.  I would give it a 5 star rating for the food but the atmosphere needs a little help.  As for the food, it is simply excellent. As great as the raviolis are, my favorite is the Salad with a sweet balsamic dressing.  It has italian olives, blue cheese crumples, and candied pecans on top!  Yum, try it.
You can also take the food home if you don't like the atmosphere.
One good thing is the pipe on the bar, they run hot water through it and it feels good to snuggle up with!

Queen City Grill

I have to admit, I have never felt compelled to write a review before, but when I read the negative experience from the guest below I just wanted to share my experience.  I have been going to the Queen City Grill for years.  The 2 things I have never been let down on are food quality and service. The happy hour food is outstanding and quite a bargain.  The Seafood is always fresh and well prepared.  The real secret.......The Queen City Grill is NOT expensive.   Cocktails are generously poured by friendly and professional staff.  The atmosphere is condusive to whatever you are looking for.  (romance, conversation)  Recently I tried a new dish, the Ling Cod, it literally melted in my mouth.  Some of my old favorites are the Cioppino, Sea Scallops, and occasionally when I am craving meat they have a fabulous New York Steak covered with a peppercorn sauce to die for.  The best part is most everything is under $20.  I will keep coming back for more!  Keep up the great work.
