This is the kind of place that makes people say they hate the Washington dining scene. It's classy, comes recommended, and has friendly service. But it's really just quite boring. Food is fine, decor is fine, everything is fine. But you walk out and you cannot for the life of you remember anything descriptive about the meal and that's kinda sad.

Chicken at last! Regulars are genuinely shocked when they see the sign that says that John now serves chicken. He said it's really helped business during the slower winter months.

I am bumping this up to four stars. Among the chain-ish type places for lunch in this area, I much prefer to drop by the cart for a solid eat rather than go back to the boring place once again.

As others have said, half of it is about the experience of going to "the burrito guy." It's like a nice version of the Seinfeld soup nazi -- get your order right.

I'm not sure what's in the K-Street special sauce. But John did not hesitate in putting it in my burrito. Good humor, good person, pretty decent food. I would too like some meat but hey, don't mess with a good thing, right?

4 pork tacos. Excellent. Great sauces (green and orange) - both variations on spicy.

Service is a mess so don't go if you need to be anywhere fast. Just kick it and don't worry.

Sad face: they were out of horchata...

And while helpful to speak spanish, don't let a lack of language skills stop you from going here. You'll get your point across just fine.

I pick up by CSA share here (from Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-op) and it's always a friendly face greeting me here. Owner lives next door. Support this local business, it's worth it.

I panned this place the first few times I went but it's stock is rising as of late possibly because of some of the changes here.

Amid the myriad of options, a customer needs to know how to stay focused in this store. Eyes on the prize - diva drinks! Shake your polaroid picture while ordering up your flavor of choice. I like the Lucy but perhaps because I got one on Lucy's birthday and it was half off.

I can't imagine anyone actually being comprehensive about the multitude of other food, gift, and drink options here.

While I generally like the atmosphere of mixed-use commercial (a cafe, a to-go place, bakery, gift shop), I just don't know what to make of this place. It looks fantastic but nothing here was better than mediocre.

Coffee and croissant. Coffee may as well have been hot colored water. Chocolate croissant was devoid of crunch and chocolate. Too bad. The cashier was clueless as he had to ask his boss for almost every order that came through after me.

That said, the place looks to have great chocolate products and other large baked goods over on the far display case. 4sq users pointed mostly to the shakes which looked pretty good but have not tried.

Used a Yelp deal here. From the outside, this place looks sketchy. Like you're really not sure you want to go in. But once you do go in -- everything starts coming together. Comfortable, if old, ambiance. Impressive menu. Friendly service. Worth a try for most people... just don't judge but the outside...

To be fair, I've only ever gotten take-out here. But there's a reason for that... I live nearby this place. In a neighborhood where it's somewhat tough to find those neighborhood-y type restaurants, this is a solid go-to place for good food, moderately priced. Kabob plates are priced for take-out at $11 with tax included. You pick your veggies from whatever 3-4 things are at their buffet. I usually get lamb, but chicken on the bone is also good. Comes with rice and naan.

Lauriol Plaza

I feel like everyone who stays for a bit in D.C. at some point ends up eating at Lauriol Plaza. I, for one, called it: "that one Mexican-ish place" for a long time. They serve a good deal more than Mexican as it turns out. I liked my lomo saltado.

This place is designed to really crank it out -- with 3.5/4 floors of tables, this place tries to get it done fast and furious. If you're looking for a slightly darker atmosphere try the more fusion-y El Centro on 14th Street which also boast triple level split but with far fewer tables.

Lots of folks come for the swirl Margaritas, as evidenced by other reviewers. Note that it's kinda in between the hot sports: it's a walk down from true Adams Morgan and up/over from Dupont. That makes it a little harder than average to get to. Expect to wait a bit for a table but I still think it's a good place for big parties.

This place is not cheap but they do what they say they'll do. For this kind of business, reliability and no-nonsense customer service are what you need. They fixed my glasses (underwire of the frameless set snapped), end of story.

If you order ahead, you can get a hot pot setup at this place. 9 mostly foreigners sitting around two hot pots (one spicy, one not). This is some of the better hot pot you will get 'round these parts. If you get the spicy (ma la), you probably don't need dipping sauces. Order the raw food to your hearts content and then eat away! Cheap and a great time for large groups.
