I suspect this may be my first one-star review... and it's been a few months in the making. We used to enjoy take-out from these guys on a regular basis, but the meal they sent home with us last week was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Each of the previous three take-out meals contained elements we had not ordered. I had tried to flag the company's attention via their Twitter account, but evidently that is not monitored for customer complaints. Calling the restaurant back after we discovered their error also got no response. The meal from a few days ago, then...? Increased price for decreased portion. We used to be able to reliably enjoy two meals for the price of one. The "half chicken" I got for my meal didn't include the wing, and only included half the breast... not exactly as advertised, when I can watch Boston Market take a cleaver to a whole chicken and shove half the result in a to-go order.

So. For inattentive service, overpriced and undersized servings, we won't be spending our money here any more.

This branch is halfway between puppy daycare and my husband's business, so it's a natural stop for us on mornings when we have a few extra minutes to stop for a breakfast treat. They serve a really tasty iced chai and a variety of breakfast sandwiches that really hit the spot: Their smoked chicken sausage sandwich is my husband's perennial favorite, but I have to admit going a little more brunch with their three-cheese grilled cheese. These sandwiches come out steaming, though, so watch out that you don't burn your tongue (or fingers) if you're leaving in a rush.

We were looking for someplace close with a good buffet for lunch today, and I ran across the 2010 top buffet winners at OnMilwaukee. These folks were in the top 15 list, so we decided to give them a try... We even found a parking spot right outside the door, so took it as a good sign.

The place feels very authentic, with Chinese dramatic masks on prints around the walls, and servers with broken English. As another reviewer noted, the place was quite dark, even when the sun graced us with its presence. Service was very prompt and attentive, and we could see several different buffet lines. We discovered right away that they serve soup extra/separately, and were given the choice between egg drop and hot and sour soups. Then we took off to see what our options were.

Their appetizers were, sadly, mediocre: The steamed dumplings were soggy, as were the egg rolls. I suppose that's part of the hazard of a buffet--overcooking in some direction--but many manage to overcome the issue with an appropriate selection of items.

The main items, including General Tsao's chicken (which they call Governor's chicken), and beef with broccoli were much better. I really liked their "Chinese vegetable with garlic" which were sauteed baby bok choi and very well done. The rice was also a little soft for my taste, but they did have a very broad selection. They even had a dessert tray.

All in all, decent, filling food, though at $9.50 not the cheapest lunch buffet option, and probably not something I'll return for. It was disappointing that OnMilwaukee rated them so high; I should've checked Yelp first, for a more representative view of their food...

For anyone looking for complementary care for their pets, this is where you should go. We make the hour-long trek from Milwaukee every two months for chiropractic for our oldest dog (she'll be 14 in January) because Dr. Julie is just that good. She was one of the first two people certified in animal chiropractic in the US and her care and understanding are unparalleled. Kyra looks forward to each visit and has regained her ability to hop up into the car or onto the bed under Dr. Julie's care.

She also wrote "Joint Yoga" and provides seminars on how to carry out those exercises with your pets.

We did a tour of local vets when our two oldest became increasingly infirm and required more and more interventions. We ended up researching based on price for the basic vaccine panel and discovered that Dr. Singh and his crew not only had the best prices but also the most flexible hours. They're open late and on weekends and are very caring with their patients--even when the visit is in extremis for that last and most painful decision. Dr. Singh is very western-medicine-based (a little ironic to me, given his heavy Indian accent), but within those parameters has never steered us wrong.

We found this spot (which is kinda hidden under a highway overpass) courtesy a coupon book. It comes off touristy in the manner of Cracker Barrel, but with a Route 66 theme. I don't know if it's that we generally choose to eat out at lower traffic times, or if visits to this locale are down, but we were pleasantly surprised all the times we've been. The portions are more than generous, and our various waitresses, while not rocket scientists did their jobs very well--and even helped with an extra hand when we visited recently while my husband's arm was in a cast.

Update - 9/27/2011
We've been going here regularly for over five years now, to the point that we're on first-name basis with half the servers (who have also been there that long, so it says something about Lali's management style!). They keep their menu up-to-date but don't overdo it on the changes--we're still coming for their popusas, which I totally crave on a regular basis (and don't forget to order extra curtido, since the spicy marinated cabbage really sets off the flavors well).

We just came back from our first meal here, and I have to say it was the best Mexican/Latin American food I've EVER had! Since it was a birthday celebration dinner for my husband, we went for the full spread. Evidently Thursdays are "Thirsty Thursdays" there, so top-shelf margaritas are half price, and you get free appetizers. The one of those that sticks out in my mind was a quesadilla with a mango addition to the cheese--very tastey. We also ordered Popusas and Empanaditas. All of the food was extremely fresh and very well made. For dinner, we both had house specials; mine on the regular menu (Carne Ranchera) and my husband's one of the daily specials (Chicken Poblano Mole). Each was outstanding in its own way, but the things that really impressed me were the rice and beans that came with the meal. Typically in a Mexican restaurant, these items are either overly flavored or throw-away elements that do very little to highlight the tastes of the main element. That was not the case at Antigua at all; the rice was delicately and unusually flavored, as were the beans, and each was well-made enough to stand on its own as well as highly complementary to the main portion.

Since we were there for a birthday dinner, we also had dessert. In this case, a thick, rich Flan with an even thicker caramel sauce. As a final touch, I was surprised when the waitress delivered a shot of peach schnapps as a lovely digestif.

Apparently this restaurant existed for a number of years somewhere on the East Side, and only recently opened up in this new location, so the staff and the setting give the impression of being brand new. Yet despite the linens on the table, the prices are eminently reasonable and the food is no-nonsense great. We will DEFINITELY be returning--as my husband said, probably as often as once a week!

We go here about once a quarter to stock up on non-perishables because their prices are great, and it's worth going a little out of our way to get things like razor blades, organic pre-packaged foods, dairy products (I totally agree with the other reviewer about the CHEESE DEPARTMENT--think Wallace & Grommit accent, there...), and ethnic foods at as cheap a price as we've been able to find in Milwaukee. It also helps that they cater to our night-owl tendencies, by staying open all night, which means we typically have the place to ourselves as shoppers... but still get great service from the employees.

Since our puppy (who is now 1 year old) really needs a chance to run off energy that our almost-14-year-old Husky doesn't keep up with, we spent a good day researching our options around town for doggie daycare facilities. These folks were the most helpful and cheapest option. For $20/day we have the peace of mind that Natasha is NOT destroying another book or piece of furniture at home (and not chewing on cables on the house or drowning in a downpour outside), but is instead well-integrated into a huge pack of dogs in a huge outdoor play space that boasts kiddie pools and ramps and other toys that let her burn off steam to her heart's content. She comes home pooped out for a few days, but has learned that Tuesdays are *her* day for daycare, so bounces around and howls at us to make sure we get her there on time.

Definitely worth the investment for over-active dogs.

Hillary is a Shellac expert, and certified by CND as having had the best application skills in her train-the-trainer training session, so I would venture the guess that she provides the best Shellac service in the city. And she's friendly, business-savvy, and immediately accessible via her Twitter presence @solessence.

(And, I have to admit, I'm proud to have been her nail model and have become her friend as she's developed this mid-life career change path.)
