I think the desserts that you grow up with, can have a huge impact on all of your future dessert decisions and obsessions.

As a kid, I was addicted to my grandmother's rice pudding. It was perfect. Baked thick rice swimming in fresh hot cream sauce - with thick amazingly sweet skin of slightly browned cream on the top.

When we used to make the trip back to Wales to see our grandparents - it was the first thing I'd ask my grandmother about on the phone. I was obsessed with that stuff. Still haven't found anything quite as good.

That rice pudding - stirred on my fascination with comfort desserts like bread pudding (my mom makes a mean one. Mostly cause she doesn't really believe in recipes and like to improvise)

So when I read about the bread pudding here - I knew I had to try Street.

Street doesn't disappoint on all fronts. The food is well done. The food portions are great. The prices are reasonable, considering the presentation and quality of the food. The ambiance is edgy and sexy, but strangely - still warm and inviting.

I wasn't wowed over by my ahi fish dish - but my dining companion's egg noodle pasta dish with the ideal amount of cream sauce - was incredible and undeniably one of the best entree choices on the menu.

And looking around us - as plate, after plate of lightly browned fried chicken made their way to all of the tables around us - I suspect the fried chicken may even be the Ace of the place.

But to get to my favorite part of any meal and every review - dessert.

Three words for you:

do bread-pudding here. (let's consider bread pudding one word to make this sentence more more poignant)

Street's Def. of Bread Pudding: A beautifully formed and textured cake of soft sweetness - sitting pretty on top of a nutty toffee sauce, and dressed lightly with just whipped cream sauce.

Trying to find words to accurately capture it's borderline divine nature - is hard.

Check out Street. They don't take reservations, but if you're a small party you should be fine. Try their pasta or fried chicken, and go for the bread pudding. Maybe even come here just for a drink and some bread pudding.

Revisit a favorite childhood dessert done right. And then some.

Trust.

Hot Cookie

When I first moved back to San Francisco I actually briefly worked nearby this place.

Each morning the enticing smells of melted chocolate and soft sugar cookie dough would waft past my nostrils - as I made my way to work.

It was sinfully painful.

And so late at night - after a long day, I would find myself waiting in line with the countless others stricken with munchies - just waiting for a just out of the oven penis cookie fix.

The cookies taste just as good as they smell. Though not cheap - two dollars for multiple bites of pure happiness is worth the sacrificed bus fare.

Oh and their red underwear briefs with Hot Cookie loudly printed on the tush - are perhaps the most adorable things ever. Sport a pair of these (and I'm speaking to you - both men and women) - with a plate of Hot Cookies - and you're guaranteed a (cough, cough) sweet night.

Yellow Cab

 Update - 11/3/2009
A bad cab ride can ruin your night.

But a good cab ride - can finish it off with a bang.

Tonight I whistled down a cab on Polk.

A female driver greeted me with a smile.

The first song that came on the radio was Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me.

I began to hum lightly and mentioned aloud, without even realizing that the cab driver could hear me - that i loved the song.

She smiled and turned it up.

The next song was Counting Crows - Round Here.

We both in union said "I love this song."

She turned the song right up - and we belted out the words together- all the way home.

http://www.youtube.com...

One of the best cab rides ever.

(three stars because I'm averaging from my previous reviews)

    Update -

Le sigh. Of course. Isn't that the way life works. I called Yellow Cab yesterday. I waited a good 10 minutes or so - before even getting through and they said they'd send a cab right over. It never came. They never called. I tried to call back to check in. To cancel. The phone didn't even ring. I got cut right off. And so I took the bus - which was alot cheaper and made alot more sense.

I'm a strong believer in everything happening for a reason - so thanks for not coming Yellow cab and allowing me to save some money. But also....not cool. Booooooo.

    Original Review

I'm definitely in the minority with this review - but I have to say   - that I've had some decent luck with Yellow Cab as of late.

I like that they remember my address - when I give my phone number. I like that they take my phone number and call me when they arrive - so I don't have to wait by the door. I like that I haven't waited very long for my cab lately. I like that they accept credit cards. I like that the driver's are always pretty patient and are more than willing to tune the radio to 98.1.

I tried to fight using Yellow Cab for awhile. And I know they're far from being perfect. But as far as taxis go - Yellow Cab has one of the biggest fleets - and seems to be improving upon their dispatch service.

They've done right by me - so far this 2009.

Of course this review is subject to change at any moment :)

 Update - 11/2/2009
So I used to have a thing for California Pizza Kitchen's salads.

I still do. A little.

But after my last salad at Mixt Greens I'm reminded of what a fresh seasonal salad tastes like.

It tastes like healthy heaven. It tastes like truffle potatoes. It tastes like grated Parmesan. It tastes like crisp romaine lettuce. It tastes like what a salad should taste like.

And I'm not looking back.

From now on - I am pledging allegiance to MG...

I am pledging allegiance to their salad making guy - who makes small talk with me about how my week's going...

To the check-out guy who always reminds me that I forgot my silverware...

To the crazy sized portions,

To the sweet delivery staff who made sure to E-mail and call me, letting me know our Catering order was going to be a little delayed today...

And to the salad that made me walk past CPK without a thought.

MG in the house.

Trust.

    Welcome to the neighborhood MG!

While I love the concept of  Mixt Greens, the old location's wait is painful. Not to mention that there is nowhere to sit - once you get your food

This location still has the wait, but it's closer-by (to me at least), and they have the great park-ish seating outside their doors, which is wonderful to see finally being used.

I ordered the Maui salad here yesterday. The ahi tuna on top of my sweetened butter lettuce pile was incredible, and the macadamia nuts and avocado a nice touch, I think I've prefer the results when I get to choose my own toppings here.

If you haven't yet tried Mixt Greens - you should.

It's organic. Fresh. And delicious. Just don't be too put off by the prices and the line. Both, I gotta say - are worth it in the end.

Harry Denton's Starlight Room

Category: Nightlife
Neighborhood: Union Square

 11/1/2009
This place is such a trip.

It reminds me of hotel bars in Qatar - with the random assortment of people who all seem to look so out of place, but yet so in place here. I am always amazed how such a kooky group of people, all make their way out to the Starlight Room- to drunkenly and awkwardly attempt to dance on a dance floor  - overlooking all of San Francisco.

It's genius. That's what it is.

Seeing some unshaven hipster couple bust out moves beside a graying couple - her squeezed into a way too tight sequin dress - while he dons an awkward fitting Dockers blazer and tapered khaki pants,  makes me smile.  I love it.

I appreciate that the dance floor is just as entertaining as the phenomenal view - through the big glass windows lining the dance floor. And when I say phenomenal - I mean it - a breathtaking view of downtown San Francisco and Union Square.

But view and amazingly strange crowd aside, there is something off about the Starlight Room. While it's fun to visit on one off occasions - it's not the kind of place I'd necessarily roll into regularly.

There's a bizarre cheesy factor to the place - which can be exciting at times - because you never know who you're going to be standing next to, or talking to; but at the same time - it's just that: a surreal world - where you just don't really know who you're talking to.

The Starlight Room seems strangely familiar - but at the same time - cold and unbalanced. It's not the kind of place that I would want to step into alone. There's just wayyyyyyyy to many strange characters walking around here.

My advice on how to best enjoy this space: dress up and go on a fun date here. Cuddle into one of their dimly lit booths. Or go with a group of friends who can appreciate quality people watching. Because this place delivers. And then some.

Trust.

 Update - 10/31/2009
I grew up not celebrating Halloween.

I have never been trick-or-treating.

Never.

Being Welsh - my parents just never celebrated the holiday and my mom was not a fan of the "creepier" side of Halloween: ie-  witches, skeletons, etc. Come Halloween - when all of the kids would go parading in school in their homemade outfits - my mom would pull my siblings and I out of school and we would do "our own form of Halloween" - which involved going to some cheesy romance movie or the like. I got some flack for it,  but luckily classmates were just too bewildered by the whole thing - to really give it much thought.

Halloween night was always the worst though. My mom would shut off all of our lights - we'd camp out in front of the "loaned" TV (another long story - but I mostly grew up without TV as well) while my mom would scribble a note on the door.

"No candy here. Sorry, we don't celebrate Halloween."

Tragic stuff.

So come college - my first Halloween from home - I of course dressed up. I paired up with my my fellow redhead twin (this girl who looked crazily similar to me), who lived down the hall and we dressed up as angels. I was the good angel. I wore white wings, and a white nightdress. My friend was the bad angel. Crooked halo, short black dress, and black wings. People confused us for each other all night.

There was a sense of liberation - dressing up that night.  Something magical about it. I have dressed up every Halloween since. (though still have yet to go trick or treating)

Talking to my mom on the phone today I reminded her that it was Halloween and that I was trying to figure out my plans. She asked if I was going to dress up. I told her I was still trying to finalize my costume.

Her thick drawl of a Welsh accent poured through the phone - with a slight smile in her voice.

"To think of all of those years I spent pulling you guys out of school on Halloween and each year since - I see pictures of your brother and you - always dressed up in some crazy outfit for Halloween. Why don't you go as something lovely - like an angel? Or a Saint?....Yeah go as a Saint Jessica."

The Saint idea was not happening - but I liked the idea of being an angel again. A testimony to my first Halloween. And also a small tribute to my mom (who has definitely mellowed out since her anti Halloween days)

While the masses were all sweating it out at Mendels, Piedmont Boutique, Costumes on Haight, and American Apparel (I have to admit I did wait my turn at American Apparel as well today) - I strolled down to Misdirections Magic Shop and picked up a pair of wings and a halo for $5.99. Haight Street was a zoo today - but adorable Inner Sunset had it all  - and there was no wait.

My halo will be proudly parading around town tonight.

If you're walking around this area, after a fifth or sixth lunch date (though I guess lunch dates are a little rare nowadays) at Pacific Catch - Misdirections could easily win you an ice-breaking conversation or two.

Any place where you can buy some fake puke, fart spray, and dismembered finger, and have someone behind the counter explain the beauty of these things to you (their staff know their stuff) is truly

Mission Beach Café

 Update - 10/29/2009
Mission Beach Cafe is easily one of my favorite places to eat in the city.

Their menu is constantly rotating, seasonal, and inventive.

The ambiance is always warm and upbeat. The servers are consistently grinning, singing along to the catchy music, and are always helpful with ordering recommendations.

The prices are pretty reasonable considering the quality of the food. This is not a cheap spot - but I always feel like I've eaten an exceptional meal when I come here. Also if you're on a budget - just go for the burger and a side of truffle fries. Voila.

Oh and yeah those truffle fries....those things are thin slivers of "ooooohs" and "ahhhhhhhs." They are seriously the bomb.

The location of Mission Beach Cafe is also beautiful. With their big windows - the Mission sun is always beaming in (though you may get too hot on a nice day.)

Their mimosas are almost the size of my head (I have a very tiny head).

And my favorite part of this place....

The desserts. Their desserts are sinfully on point. Their coconut cream pie with fresh whipped cream   - always gets me  - but honestly their entire dessert selection is worth trying. All are fresh and homemade.

If you want to earn big points on a date - take them here.

Trust.

I have yet to be disappointed by a meal here.

The food is exceptional here. Especially their brunch menu.

And though you might find yourself waiting a little  - the wait is far more reasonable than any of the other Mission breakfast spots like St. Francis and Boogaloos.

I highly recommend their french toast - (the toppings seem to vary) and if you have no plans later on in the day - I dare you to get a mimosa (they're massive! - though I've heard that they're a little too short on the juice)

Mission Beach may be one of my new favorite breakfast spots, other than Zazie. The staff are consistently personable and upbeat, the food is fresh and superb, the ambiance is lovely and chill and perfect for catching up with a friend, and the prices - are pretty reasonable - considering the high quality and portions of food.

    Must try.

    Trust.

Walking by this place with an empty stomach - I caught sight of the classic looking red booths in the moon-lit windows, and just knew that this place would make a killer milkshake.

And lemme tell you...

Their oreo milkshake is beyond dreamy. Thick. Creamy. With those pesky, but oh so delicious chunks of oreo cookie that clog up your straw. And their servings are huge. I highly recommend asking for a milkshake and splitting it three ways. Plus milkshakes just taste better shared.

We had a tight time limit when we piled into the booth, since I had to rush to make the 10-o-clock caltrain. We told our server that we were in a rush - and with a big adorable smile - he said.

"No problem. I'm on it."

That smile bore nothing but the truth - because literally in about no less that 10 minutes - he walked out with all of our orders.

Mine was a thick slap of fresh cooked salmon topped with thinly cut seasoned potatoes and a mustard dressing, on top of fragrant herb-ed rice with zucchini accents.

Despite forking that thing in my mouth in 5 minutes flat (literally) - it was divine. The salmon had not an ounce of fishy taste and the dressing was strong - but didn't overpower the freshly cooked fish.

Our server passed by our table and noticed that my coworkers had just barely touched their dishes (both of their dishes looked amazing as well), while mine had been picked clean.

He smiled.

"Daaaaaaaaamn, you must have liked yours"

All I could retort back was.

"It's what i do...it's what I do."

I then rushed off into the night like a budget -  UGGs sporting Cinderella and caught my 10-o-clock Caltrain with time to spare.

So....

For quality late night dining - Palo Alto Creamery is phenomenal. Their menu is vast and they serve breakfast all day (I'm still kicking myself that I didn't order the Caribbean French Toast for dessert - it sounded unreal. Un-f'in-real).

My advice - come here and go big.

Put aside your healthy eating plans and get that milkshake - as well as the french toast, as well as the pancakes, as well as the chicken salad sandwich, as well as the pasta, as well as the salmon....

Trust.
