If everybody drew more. Painted more. Sculpted more.
The world would be a better place.

It seems so wrong to me - that as kids our artistic talents are cultivated through art class. Dioramas. Posters. Holiday card making etc.
And then all of a sudden we grow up - and stop creating. Some expressing ourselves.
It's wrong.
When I worked with third graders - briefly in Dorchester, Boston - some of my most favorite memories with my class - were the moments when we'd put on the radio and just all do art.Their normally distracted faces would be busy concentrating on carefully cutting out a picture of their crayon colored mom, fervently scribbling their names all over blank pieces of paper, and excitedly explaining their drawings to me in detail. Their eyes always gleamed with touching light, when they were able to let go of what was jumping around in their heads - through bold colors and strong lines.
My favorite pieces of art in my room are theirs'. Pictures by 9 year olds - can't be anything but - real, stirring, and genuine....
Reminders that that the best way to escape from, and also find ourselves is through art.
Flax knows this well.
Flax appreciates the beauty of creativity.
Walking into Flax should be a weekly ritual for everyone.
With it's huge ceilings, and warehouse looking concrete walls - Flax manages to take a huge and potentially intimidating space and make it accessible. Their displays are bright, well thought out, and engaging. Their selection is unbelievable. Their organization is profound. And their staff are passionate. And helpful.
But what really separates Flax from the countless other sterile stores packed with jaded too-cool art students - is the sight of a table in the middle of their store, with two young girls intently seated around it, doing art.
The most profound example of art in the store.

My friend is a big fan of the pizza here. He likes their tasty Italian style crust and believes - that the fact that they make every slice individually takes their slices to a higher level.
Their beer specials and pitcher special are What's UP. A good selection of beers on tap with premium 8 dollar pitchers on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (domestic are less)
In addition to their solid beer and pizza - they have a diverse menu of sorts - including everything from calamari to prime rib. Yup - I said prime rib.
And if you like you can enjoy it by the fireplace - with your computer (yes, they have wi-fi), on their comfy couch (which I've taken advantage of a number of times). Oh and if you're into sports - they have a couple of TVs - which even show critical Cavs game (Lebron in the house).
Cause that's What's Up.

Good things cost more (I guess that's not always true in some cases...ok many cases)
But...
For the sake of this review - let's just go with the "good things cost more notion"...
cause that helps me rationalize paying over 40 dollars for local organic sunflower topped bread, organic fresh made peanut butter, red peppers and ancho chili jam, frog hollow preserves, organic walnuts, organic pecans, grateful dead inspired fruit soaked granola, and a medley of delicious yogurt and chocolate covered munchie material.
But seriously Andronico's though pricey is open till 10. Their stuff is easy to navigate. They pretty much carry it all. And their produce and meat sections just scream - eat me - they're so drop dead fresh.
Trust.
I won't be kicking Andronico's out of bed anytime soon,
since it is close and convenient.
But when I push my cart down Andronico's aisles I can't help but scream...
"Trader Joe's! Trader Joe's!"
In my head.
Andronico's isn't bad looking. Well stocked shelves. Vast produce selection and an impressive deli meat and fish selection. They even have some beautiful floral arrangements and an exceptionally taste brie selection. (mmmmmmmmm brie)
But paying 16 dollars for mango salsa and a couple of slices of turkey is kind of a turn off.
OK - a big one.
But...
When you have an 8 hour marathon of America's Next Top Model (yes I watched all 7 hours of that 8 hours) and three piles of laundry waiting for you at home....
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes and make that booty-foodie call.

New must have on their menu: Their Berkeley Bowl - Jessica Style.
What is Jessica Style?
1.) Replace mixed greens with romaine lettuce
2.) Skip the onions
3.) Skip the heavy dressing
4.) Just use their organic balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil instead.
A medley of crunchy greens topped with crispy carrot shavings, avocado, garbanzo beans, sprouts, cucumbers, and tomatoes and then lightly covered with some light flavor of your choosing.
Sooooo what's up.
Just be sure to eat it at The Grove (on a nice day - be sure to score on outside seat). If you get it TO GO - you will definitely be disappointed. The Grove's TO GO orders just always lack spark and spunk.
And if you're really in it - to win it - pair your delightful salad with a strawberry and banana smoothie.
Trust.
The warmth of this place is undeniable.
There's nothing like it in the area.
The lighting in here is gifted. It cascades in flattering muted yellows and oranges around people.
I've tried a wealth of things on the menu now. Their hummus and pita bread - though pricey - is addictive. Their chicken pot pie - is surprisingly light - and always flavorful. Their salads are big and the ingredients fresh. Their french toast is perfect for sugar cravings. And you can always customize things like sandwiches and breakfast burritos.
Yeah - I've had some misses here. There's been instances when I didn't like my dish, when my order got messed up, or moments that I've had to wait a crazy while. But that stuff happens. Especially considering what a busy bustling spot this becomes during lunch.
My favorite part about coming here - is that some of their regular staff - know my name and always ask how I'm doing. It always makes me feel so special.
I'm easy like that. Say my name with a smile - and I can't help but beam.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh hhhhhhhhh.
Insert high pitch squeal.
A couple of oooooooooo OMGs.
And a frantic awkward run in the rain, with my long bell-bottoms dragging in dirty oil speckled puddles.
This was me today - running to and from one of the most adorable, quaint and architecturally beautiful coffee/food spots downtown.
I am so in love with The Grove. Swooning as I shovel (cause that's way I roll - when I eat) spoonfuls of fresh cut fruit and crispy granola - lightly coated in creamy yogurt into my mouth - in between sips of a superb chai.
I feel like I'm in a Friend's episode - walking into the The Grove. It's downtown's modern and more adorable version of the Central Perk. There's statuesque big trees gracefully reaching up to the ceiling. There's darling seating. Stunning wood intermingled throughout the space. A cozy fireplace. An upper lodge area for people to sit back. There's couches. Well thought out accents everywhere.
I cannot stop gushing how unbelievably exceptional this space is. Especially considering the mass of unimaginative and bleak eating spots downtown.
I am truly. Truly in love.
Also their tea selection will wow you. It's stunning. Their breakfast menu is heartwarming. They carry a diverse array of beers on tap. They carry Three Twin organic ice-cream. Their dessert selection is mouth-watering (seriously killer looking) Their chai is generous, frothy, and just the right amount of spice.
And their fruit...
Having been spoiled by the genius that is Good Earth - I am a fruit bowl/parfait snob.
And while The Grove's fruit cup lacked the variety of Good Earth - the strawberries and bananas were overflowing with taste and the granola was delicious. No lame filler cantelope or melon here.
The Grove is a beacon of wood catching light in my world.
And while I believe their food selection could be bigger and a little bit more diversified - I have nothing but love for this place.
Trust.

Christopher had an adorable casual set-up and welcomed passer-bys to come into his darling tea oasis for samples of his beautiful tea. Right then and there I became a T-We fan. Not only did T-We have exceptional well cultivated tea - but Christopher is one of the kindest people you will meet. His very being is calming.
Being that I'm not a big drinker, I adore basking in the goodness that is tea. In San Francisco we are blessed with a decent sprinkling of tea stores that carry a vast variety of all sorts of antioxidant filled liquid goodness. Unfortunately such said tea spots often close early, so you have to pick the right moments to indulge in their earthy magic.
T-We Tea doesn't have an official location as of now - but you can buy Christopher's wondrous brews online and you can also find him teaching tea classes at The Workshop on Divisadero. Secretly I'm hoping that T-We can help bridge that gap of late night tea-eries in the area, keeping non-drinkers like myself satiated with beautiful cups of energizing lovely brews.
