2.5. Cute restaurant with lots of outdoor seating. Unfortunately, the fish taco lunch special I had was seriously bland. I've had so much better at freaking USC (Armando's lunch truck). Think I'll stick with Highland Park for Mexican.

OVERPRICED. Come on, you are a fast food restaurant so price accordingly. I'll stick with In N Out.

This place does its job and that is to provide groceries and other necessities at an affordable price. Nothing great, nothing bad. So 2 stars for existing and an additional star for the guy who sells fresh and hot tamales out of his van (or car, it depends) in the parking lot. He is almost always there every evening yelling out "Tamale tamale tamale" so you can't miss him. I absolutely love the tamales especially the spicy chicken one and at a dollar a piece, I get ten at a time and have tamales for dinner, breakfast and lunch.

One of my favorite Highland Park eateries. I order at least two pupusas whenever I drop by. Only downside is the lack of AC which during the summer can result in some really sweaty dining (even with a high ceiling and lots of ceiling fans). But five stars for the food.

The barbacoa de borrego is the bomb! VERY lamb-y. Overall just a pleasant little restaurant with delicious food at decent prices.

Finally a real, honest to goodness coffee house in Highland Park! I had a small regular coffee ($1.75) and really liked it. Grand opening is December 12th, I will be sure to return.

Antigua Bread

I'll be honest: I haven't tried the food here. But each time I'm here I see people eating, so I assume it's decent at the very least. What first brought me to this peculiar cross between coffee shop, diner and bakery (named for a West Indian island nation to boot) were coffee and free wireless and on that front, Antigua Bread meets my needs fine. I do feel like it needs to decide on what it really wants to be: coffee shop, or restaurant? My vote (and cash) goes to coffee shop. The staff, though nice, also needs to speed up the cleaning; more than once I've seen tables left uncleared for way too long even when it's not particularly busy. Plus power outlets on the north wall would be nice.

Figueroa Produce

This is a great produce market! The produce is fresh and very reasonably priced, unlike the nearby Fresh & Easy. The meat section is clean and odor-free, a far cry from the nearby Food 4 Less. I love how they don't spray mist over the vegetables. Oftentimes markets go overboard with mist-spraying (hello Food 4 Less) and end up flooding their greens with disgusting results.

Pretty good selection for such a small store. We even found Havarti cheese.

The owners double as cashiers sometimes and according to them they just opened about a month ago. I hope they stay. I like Food 4 Less for packaged food, but this should be THE neighborhood produce market for HLP.

I don't get the appeal of this place. The yakitori were pretty bland and overpriced. The soft-shell crab dish was okay, but the portion was way too small. The 5-kind sashimi platter was bad. Basically everything ranged from bad to so-so and was way overpriced. I guess people come here to drink with buddies, not for the food.

When we got there we saw a handwritten notice at the entrance claiming that due to water shortage, the city had prohibited the restaurant from providing tea or water(!) refills. We laughed, shook our heads and went in anyway. Bad decision.

Never going back.
