The Garden Deli

Category: Delis

2.0 star rating

The word "meh" sums this place up.  The prices are cheap (under $4 for a sandwich), but you get what you pay for.  In my experience, the vegetables are old and shriveled, and the meat is extremely processed.

I also agree with the reviewer who says "The food is good, but they microwave your food on a Styrofoam plate. That is not very safe."

Nothing at this place made me angry or nauseous, which why I'm giving it two stars instead of one.  However, when Jimmy Johns is selling fresh, consistent, cheap sandwiches a few blocks away, I don't see any reason to visit the Garden Deli.

I've probably been to 50 car dealers in the last 3 years.  However, this is the first dealer that I actually *liked*.

"So, why do you go to car dealers if you don't like car dealers?" you ask.  I love cars, and I'm always weighing the following question: How do I test drive a car without having to tolerate manipulative sales people?  Cars are a hobby--possibly an obsession--for me, so I test drive far more cars than I actually buy.  Don't get me wrong, I buy and sell more cars than most people do, but I don't buy 100% of the cars that I test drive.

Today, I went to Dublin Mazda to test drive an MX-5 Miata.  I'm 21 years old, and I don't exactly look like a serious customer.  Nonetheless, the sales person let me take the Miata for a (relatively) long drive on the the highway.

Between the hilariously fun car and the no-pressure sales person, this is the best dealer experience I've ever had.

Johnathan's Sandwich House

After a bit of Yelp browsing, I decided to grab lunch at Jonathan's.  It was only after I had ordered my Gonzo (turkey avocado) sandwich that I remembered that my dental work started acting up last night.  (I have an appointment to visit the dentist next week, but in the mean time, eating crunchy things is a bit painful.)

Once I had my sandwich, I really started to worry that it would be too crunchy and that it would hurt my temporarily-damaged tooth. I looked at the sandwich and thought "please don't hurt me!"  When I bit into the sandwich, I found it to be the smoothest, creamiest sandwich I had ever eaten.  My teeth didn't hurt at all, and my tastebuds were thrilled.  I'll definitely be back.

I  came here a couple of weeks ago looking for a place to study.  First of all, parking is expensive and time-limited in this area.  More importantly, there were ZERO empty seats at study tables.  Something like 60% of the chairs were occupied by daydreaming or sleeping homeless people.  An other 10% of the seats were occupied by garbage bags full of dirty clothes owned by the homeless people.  Worse, people were talking loudly, and voices echoed throughout the library.  I won't be back.

Farley's on 65th

This a passable--perhaps even above-average--coffee shop.  The wifi works well.  The coffee is tasty.

Here's why I only gave Farley's four (and not five) stars: Cafe Tribu is less than a block away.  Cafe Tribu is more airy and open, and the ambiance is better.  Cafe Tribu also has couches.  So, Farley's is like Cafe Tribu minus the ambiance, the huge windows, and the awesome couches.

I haven't tried the food at Farley's or at Tribu, so this review is purely based on coffee, wifi, and ambiance.

This place is great.  The doors and windows are all open on nice days.  I'm currently enjoying the free wifi, lounging on a trendy white couch, and feeling the breeze in my hair.  The couches have square armrests, which makes them perfect for using a computer mouse.  The coffee is good, too.

Don't worry about the fact that it's in Oakland--the area around Tribu Cafe feels safe.

C-U Taxi

I went to the Savoy 16 theater last night with a bunch of friends, and our movie was scheduled to end after the buses stop running.  So, I gave C-U Taxi a call while we were walking into the theater.  We had 8 people, so I thought we'd need two cabs.

Surprise!  They have a 13-passenger bus, which is cheaper than taking 2 cabs!  Score!  We booked the bus for 12:45 am.  When the movie (Harry Potter 6) ended, we went outside, but couldn't find the taxi.  I called the company, and it turned out they dispatched the bus to the Beverly Theater by mistake.

The bus showed up 10 minutes after we had scheduled it, but it was no big deal.  The bus was freaking cool, though.  It was one of those "karaoke party buses" that I often see Greek people riding around in.

It didn't take long to get back to campus, and the driver charged $3/person for the ride from Savoy 16 to Green&Wright.

World of Powersports

I've got an old, somewhat temperamental Honda scooter, and I've become fed up with the Champaign Honda dealer's poor service and scalping prices.  So, when I needed a new air filter and a carburetor gasket, I called up World of Powersports.  I experienced truly amazing service.

The parts representative looked up the parts up in the database and quoted me prices quickly.  I told him the cheaper prices I'd found online at http://www.bikebandit.com, and he matched Bike Bandit's prices.  Then, the World of Powersports representative said he would charge $10 to ship the parts to my house in Champaign, but the shipping charge didn't show up on the receipt.  Score.

The parts guy said my parts would arrive in 3 days.  They showed up a day early, and my scooter is back on the road.  I will buy from them again. Show owner comment »

Istanbul Mediterranean Cuisine - CLOSED

After reading the Yelp reviews, I was pretty darn sure I would like Istanbul.  And you know what?  I did.

However, it wasn't perfect.  I arrived with my family on the afternoon of the 4th of July.  When we walked in, we noticed that we were the only people in the restaurant.  Once seated, the waiter brought out some piping hot bread.  And, here's why I give Istanbul 4 not 5 stars: he said "this is our house bread, we warm it up every day."  All right, buddy, do you mean you "bake" it every day, or are you admitting that your chef is "too lazy to bake it" every day?  The bread definitely didn't taste fresh.  We then ordered some saganaki, which was delicious.

However, once the food arrived, (almost) all was forgiven.  My salmon kebab was absolutely perfect: buttery salmon infused with the flavor of roasted tomatoes, onions and peppers.   Also, the salad was coated in very thin lemony dressing, which was a welcome a departure from the thick processed bottled dressings a lot of restaurants have.

All in all, I enjoyed Istanbul, and I will return soon.  It's totally worth the trek off campus.

Quiznos Classic Subs

I don't usually review franchise restaurants, since they're all the same and you know what to expect.  However, I visited this Quiznos yesterday, and it was decidedly sub-par.

I made some modifications/repairs to my motorcycle, and it was a beautiful day outside, so I decided to take a ride out to Le Roy, IL and back.  I was in the mood for Quiznos, so I google mapped for a Quiznos between Champaign and Le Roy.

So far as I could tell from my quick google search, this is a normal Quiznos location.  When I arrived, it turned out to be inside a gas station.  That aside, the lettuce was brown, and the water was green.  It tasted sort of ok, but the Quiznos restaurants in Champaign-Urbana are far better.
