The only thing is that the interior is so ugly, sometimes I can't even stay in there to eat. Bright green walls (think Nickelodeon slime) with white Ikea furniture and the same ugly floor tiling that has probably been there since 1983. It literally hurts my eyes.
This is some GOOD yogurt. Frozen treat-wise, I'd say this is second only to Goodberry's.
I can't say it was good. I mean, I know it's a diner, and diners are usually mediocre, but I'm really not getting the huge crowds I'm always seeing here. I'll try it again and order something different, because I hear there are some other menu options that are pretty all right.
And now you know that I'm not a real expert at this place, so here's the real reason as to why I'm writing this review:
AVOID THE CHEESY HASH BROWN CASSEROLE.
I only ate a bite and I didn't feel well for the rest of the day. And I'm pretty sure the potatoes that were in it were raw.
Anyway, I promise I'll try this place again around 2:00am one weekend.
Everything I ordered sounded better on the menu than it was when I ate it. I started with the local fig and baby lettuce salad; my entree was the piquillo pepper relleno with queso fresco, field peas, grilled avocado, mashed sweet potatoes & plantains and mole verde; and dessert was cheesecake. And all of it was just really bland (and I never thought I'd find a bland pepper). Also, for $8, I was expecting a bit more than a silver dollar-sized piece of cheesecake. But I have no complaints about any of it aside from it being kind of dull.
Sure I'd go back, but only if it was someone else's idea and I wasn't paying.

Good breakfast!
We made the mistake of trying to go here on a Friday night the week that it opened without making reservations, and it was PACKED. We ended up having a full-service dinner at the bar, which I enjoyed because we got to talk to the bartender (who was really cool) and study what other people were eating without looking weird.
I ordered the Hot Guava cocktail, and it was an experience. A good experience! I wouldn't recommend it as a refreshing beverage, but I do recommend it. I don't really remember what was in it, but there was guava and jalapenos, which definitely gave it a kick.
For my appetizer I got the plantanos rellenos, which were cheese and jalapeno-stuffed plantains, and I loved them - they were really interesting. My entree was the vegetarian enchiladas, which were seriously bland, but I don't see them on the menu anymore. For dessert I had the flan, which was very good, but it didn't sweep me off my feet or anything. I hear the churros are fabulous, though.
The atmosphere was really cool. It was a good kind of noisy, the lighting was perfect, and I loved the decor (especially the ceiling in the main dining area).
I'll definitely have to give it another try now that it has settled in a little more and the menu seems to have been changed around. Please let me love you, Dos Perros!
I can't give you any real suggestions food-wise, because I love EVERYTHING. My personal favorite is the pecan-crusted chicken with macaroni & cheese, but like I said, you can't go wrong with anything. For dessert, make sure to either get the Coca Cola cake or the banana pudding. Or both (that's what I do).
Also, if you don't want to wait in a long line to eat, make sure you get there about 20 minutes before it opens. Trust me. It's no secret that this place is REALLY good, so there's always a line.
The restaurant is in this beautiful old house, and while we were walking up I was a little worried that it might be too stuffy for me (I'm a bit provincial, I s'pose), but it was the perfect balance of classy and laid back. And the atmosphere is also very romantic.
And the FOOD! We started with cheese drop biscuits with orange marmalade and fig butter (both were delicious, but the fig butter was fresh from the fig tree in the backyard and was my favorite), and for appetizers we got the mozzarella & tomatoes with pecan pesto, and the soup of the day, which was gazpacho with local shrimp, sweet pickles, radishes and vodka infused with celery. WOW. The gazpacho was so good that my husband teared up, which is very funny, so tell all of your friends.
Next we were served greens with watermelon, feta and balsamic vinegar, which was the perfect balance of sweet and salty. My entree was a chicken breast, summer squash casserole with pecans, escarole and herbed goat cheese. Guys. This was incredible. If I could tear up over food like my husband, I would have. But I did have one of those moments where I closed my eyes and said, "Mmm," which I never do because that's kind of obnoxious.
Thank goodness I saved enough food for dessert, because we had the Southern pecan & almond tart with praline ice cream and bourbon caramel sauce and it was heavenly. The perfect ending to this marvelous meal.
In summary: GO HERE NOW.
The folks behind the counter were so NICE. When they found out that they were from NC, they made sure that they got the best barbecue out of their batch for us to try, because they knew we know a thing or two about barbecue.
And ohhhhh man was it good. I got the chopped barbecue sandwich, which was amazing. It was perfect and messy and saucy and I ate every bit of it. Even the fries were good! I'm used to crinkle cut fries right out of the Ore-Ida bag at barbecue joints, so these were a pleasant surprise. And my husband, who claims to be a barbecue connoisseur, agrees that this may top our beloved NC barbecue.
This place is kind of out of the way (it IS pretty close to Graceland, though), but it's WELL worth the drive. From ANYWHERE, I might add.

I ordered Lupie's Chili Slaw Burger with the vegetarian chili and chips, which was all right. My burger was kind of dry and burnt, and there wasn't enough chili on it for me to really taste it (but what I could taste of it made me want to come back and try a bowl of it). The slaw was good, though! My husband said his chicken wings were tasty, but he has also liked every chicken wing he's ever encountered, so I don't know if his review is worth much.
Our server seemed rushed and kind of annoyed, even though there wasn't a really big crowd. But she was attentive - our food came out quickly, we were never left drink-less, and she checked in on us a lot.
I thought the food was all right and the atmosphere was really cool, but my Charlotte family has assured me that I caught it on an off day, so I'll have to try it again.
