East Wind

This place just opened a week and a half ago and it was slow when I went tonight. The staff is really friendly (friendlier than any normal Vietnamese restaurants I've ever been to in Eden).

My friend and I got the house garden roll (goi cuon), the "pho old down" (pho dac biet), and the grilled pork on rice (com thit nuong).

The goi cuon was good and came with a peanut sauce. On the inside is pork, shrimp, vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, and lettuce.

The com thit nuong was also pretty good. The rice isn't crushed and the pork that it comes with is thin in comparison to the com tam at another restaurant that I'm used to. However, whether the rice is crushed or not didn't really make a difference to me. The pork is thin, so it's not very fatty. When most places have thin pork, it's generally overcooked, hard, and chewy. Not at East Wind, the pork was really tender, cooked well, and very flavorful. It came with fish sauce (nuoc mam) but it's not that strong and is a bit sweeter so it's great for anyone who can't stand super strong fish sauce.

I don't recommend getting pho from restaurants that don't specialize in pho (their broth isn't flavorful enough) and this is no exception. They don't give you the bottles of hoisin or sriracha sauce. Instead they give you this tiny platter and a small plate of vegetables. It was okay, but I wouldn't get it again (especially because I'm a creature of habit and have been getting my pho fixes at pho 75 since I was in my mom's belly).

Anyway this place is really nice (and surprisingly big). They have a decent beer selection and the staff is really nice!

BTW! FOR ALL GMU STUDENTS!!
Show your student ID until the end of September and get 15% off!
After September, students will still get 10% off!

This is a great Vietnamese place for GMU students to go for their hangover pho! (I've never been to Viet House so I can't compare.) Show owner comment »

This is probably more like a 3.5

They have a pretty darn good selection of women's clothing, but where they fall short is their pricing.

Basically everything I picked up was $10, $15, $20. That's kinda expensive for a thrift store IMO. I went on a Monday so certain colors were 50% off, but everything else was 33% off. Nothing I wanted was 50% off, so I ended up walking away with a cardigan for $10 (originally $15). Clearly not the best or cheapest purchase I've ever bought from a thrift store, but I really liked the cardigan.

They have a few dress rooms in the back of the store.

This is a bit far from me, so I'll try to stop by every time I'm in the area. Hopefully next time some of the things I want will be on sale :/

Update - 9/6/2011
I feel as though as I should write an updated review since I got the chance to stop by again on Labor Day.

B-Thrifty was having 50% off this past Sunday and Monday for Labor Day (and so was Unique). The thing I really enjoyed about B-Thrifty is that while Unique was CRAZY busy, packed, and difficult to navigate, B-Thrifty was surprisingly not that busy. Although, I'm sure that's not good for business, at least I had an easier and more serene time shopping. (Plus B-Thrifty has bigger aisles, meaning it's easier to get through and less of a traffic cart jam.)

Although their jewelry is a bit pricy for thrift store prices ($15 for necklaces?), I have found a lot of their clothing much cheaper on this second visit. The one thing I absolutely love about B-Thrifty is their sweater selection. They have, by far, the best sweater selection out of any thrift store I've been so. Chunky knit sweaters, cable knit sweaters, thick turtle necks, thick cardigans, slouchy sweaters, and available in tons of sizes. Most of them are only $5! (I snagged two for $2.50 on Monday's sale :D!) I always go crazy in this section and get really grab happy, but I sadly had to convince myself to not buy 20 sweaters because I don't have the closet space for it.

B-Thrifty isn't eerily silent anymore, which I appreciate. (Yay, thanks for caring about your customers' feedback B-Thrifty :)!) The thing is, B-Thrifty has great customer service, takes feedback seriously, and really cares about their customers. It's also a plus that they go the extra mile to have a social media presence (Twitter & Facebook). Most thrift stores couldn't care less about their customers, and most complaints could go unheard. So it's really refreshing that a local business (especially a thrift store) really cares about your business. Plus the employees here are definitely friendlier than other thrift stores I've been to.

So consider me a loyal fan. (In fact, B-Thrifty may has taken the number one position for my favorite thrift store in the area.) I won't be able to go as often as I would like because of distance, but at least it's easy to get to (Take 95-S, then take the exit for Route 1 South and go straight. It will be on the right).

I missed the grand opening since I had work so I went today. When you walk in, the left side of the location seems to be a bazaar, and the right side is where the thrifting actually happens.

They have a TON of things, so much it's almost overwhelming. However, I looked through every single piece and I only walked out with two things. Maybe all of their good stuff got taken over the weekend? Who knows. I saw a lot of "vintage" old stuff and not too many new modern things.

Their pricing is a little bit more expensive than other thrift stores I've been to. It's also eerily quiet in there (radio music please?). I did notice the lights flickering as mentioned by another yelper, but I was too concentrated on buying clothes than being distracted by lighting.

They have a bunch of fitting rooms for ladies in the back corner (I didn't see any for guys).

But anyway, it's pretty obvious that this thrift store is trying to compete with Unique Thrift Store. They both have bazaars, and they're both extremely large. Unique Thrift Store has 25% off on Thursdays for card holders whereas B-Thrifty has 30% off on Thursdays for card holders, coincidence much?

I'll probably be back eventually (hopefully when they restock with better items), but until then I prefer Unique since it's closer to me, they have more sales, it's a bit cheaper, and I always find amazing things there.    Show owner comment »

Rose Too

So on the website it specifically states,

"You'll enjoy the intimate store and its gracious design that showcase the finest donations received by Yesterday's Rose for resale."

I don't get what this store is supposed to be. If it's supposed to be a higher end, "upscale" resale store, then it fails. Their selection is small, everything is pretty overpriced for what it is, and there's nothing impressive (there are, however, a lot of creepy dolls). There are old "vintage" wedding dresses for $125. $125!! You know, I could totally go to Unique Thrift Store and get a similar dress for $50 to $70 tops.

I mean, think about it. Everything found in this store was DONATED, making it somewhat a THRIFT STORE. But instead of leaving these "gems" (I don't know if I can call it that since there wasn't anything I liked enough to be called a gem) in Yesterday's Rose for thrifters to find, they put these clothing articles in Rose Too to be marked up and expect people to buy it so that they can profit off of it. This leaves Yesterday's Rose with not-so-great inventory and Rose Too with really overpriced stuff.

If they want to become a vintage boutique, then I think they should work on their inventory and not rely only on donations.

But yeah, I'm pretty disappointed with this store. It looks like it could have a lot of potential, and the interior is really nice, but their inventory is lacking.

The Treasure Hound

After reading all of the raving reviews, I decided that I had to check this place out myself, and boy am I glad I did. (Luckily, I also work really close by.) The place is small, and the selection is a bit small, but it's worth looking through. I saw a Theory skirt, Christian Dior pants, a J. Crew dress, and a lot of other nice things. There's less "trash" and more "treasure" if you will, which makes up for such a small selection. Their scarves are $1 and a few are priced individually at $2 a piece (cheaper than other thrift stores that charge $5). I didn't see tags on a lot of the clothing, so I wasn't sure how their pricing typically is. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything that fit me properly so I didn't buy anything.

This place is a bit close to my heart since it benefits Friends of Homeless Animals, and I'm a pet owner myself. Also, they welcome customers to bring their pets in since it's a pet friendly business.

I definitely plan on stopping by again.

If you're on Lee Road coming from Willard, headed to Route 50, you'll have to make a U-Turn at the light to turn into the entrance of the small plaza.

Yesterday's Rose

I used to go to their old location but had time today to look at their new location. The new store is really nice, spacious, clean, and looks much better than the old one. Pricing is really a hit or miss. The majority of items are priced by category and are pretty cheap (they had a 50% off sale today when I went), but you get what you pay for. Everything that I wanted was cheap, yeah, but they were missing buttons or had holes. Their dresses are individually priced and were around $12.99?! That's more than Goodwill's casual dresses (and I think Goodwill is kinda expensive).

Their shoes are $2 and their boots are $3. I thought this was a steal until I realized that they're cheap for a reason. They're all cheap because they're all dirty, worn out, and crazy old. They had nicer shoes, but again, those were individually priced.

They have a bottom floor where they sell records, books, and linens.

There is basically free parking right next to the store and they have two fitting rooms.

Needless to say, I left empty handed. I guess they just mark up anything nice they get and throw it into their Rose Too store.

I love Ikea and the food here but two gripes.

Why did they get rid of the vegetable alfredo? That was my FAVORITE thing on the menu (as well as my siblings and friends) and is much healither than the chicken tenders (although those are amazing too).

They're often sold out on a lot of things I need and so I have to make multiple trips which suck cause it's so far away from me.

The Salvation Army

I normally go to the Salvation Army in Alexandria because it's closer to my house but I decided to stop here since I was across the street at B Thrifty already.

The selection of women's clothes seem smaller than the one in Alexandria. Their fitting rooms are kinda dark so you can't really see the colors that well. The prices are a TAD bit cheaper than Alexandria, but they don't have anything good so it doesn't really matter. It's also really crowded in there too. Overall, it's okay but I don't think I'd be back since the Alexandria one is closer and nicer.

I came here for mother's day (late review, but better than never!) and I had never been to a florist before. I didn't want to get my mom flowers from the grocery stores because the petals would always fall off immediately.

The miss who helped me was really helpful and patient. She helped me put together a bouquet by picking out individual flowers and even arranged it really nicely! It is a bit expensive for flowers, but shouldn't you spend a little bit more to show how much you really appreciate who the flowers are for? Plus I love flowers, so I didn't mind. I'll definitely be back :)!

Plato's Closet

I've been here on four separate occasions to sell clothes. I come in with a giant Ikea bag and normally I get 3/4 of the bag back. I always leave with about $50-$60 for the things I sell but most of them are from Forever 21, H&M, A&F, and HCO (it probably helps that some of them still have tags?). I don't really mind the low payout because I don't mind parting with the clothes since they've just been taking up space in my closet for months/years (I don't know how they tell that's new/old as they claim they only buy new things, but I don't mind). And if I hadn't brought it to sell, I probably would have ended up donating it or letting it rot in my closet anyways.

As in terms of clothing there, I never really find anything I like and when I do I find it moderately expensive for second hand clothing. This isn't for the cheap thrifter, but it is easier to find more decent things than a thrift store for those who don't like searching through too much garbage (this place keeps the trashy clothes to a minimum, but I've seen some terrible things before).
