San Clemente Dog Park

This dog park is a-ok.  On the bright side, it's got a good amount of amenities: size segregated parks, nearby trailhead for exercising the pups, water fountain shaded seating area and ample street parking.  For those owners that prefer exercising their dogs in addition to socializing them, S.C. dog park is too small.  The small dog park is at the bottom of a hill and water drainage made the entry area muddy and slick in the morning.  The pups got their paws and low rider bellies caked with dirt.  Lucked out and had a bunch of friendly dogs there while we were visiting.

You're missing out if you don't look over O'briens news blog.  They seem to always have a great beer tasting event that I can't make it out to.  A couple of days ago, I finally made it out to their Kern River Brewing company night for SDBW.

Backstory... KRBC has been on my 'to try list' for a bit now b/c of their stellar beer nerd website scores and GABF medals.  I've been around SD and even up to Costa Mesa looking for some of KRBC brews, to no avail.

There were a least six KRBC brews available and I got to try Just Outstanding IPA and Class V Stout on cask.  Loved them both.  Notably, the stout was very deceptive.  One of the easiest drinking stouts in memory, noted vanilla and cocoa accents were upfront, chug-a-lugged while talking and then boom, it struck.

So beerwise, I love O'briens pub.

Burgers were okay.  Wait staff were two roller derby ladies that somehow managed to keep everyone on the patio happy.... but maybe that was the great beer working.

If you covet your car's smooth lines and unding'ed doors, don't use it when you go to O'Brien's.  The parking lot is tiny and was designed to accommodate the smallest legal stall size possible.  At peak hours, parallel parking is probably your best option.

I live in a bar wasteland, this is the nearest beer oasis.  For this reason, O'Brien's is a favorite of mine.  Besides the beer variety, the big arm chairs stand out to me.  It's a little awkward to navigate when you order and pick up food and drink but oh so comfortable.  The burgers are pretty good for pub grub.  But back to the main draw: the beer.  They have over twenty on tap and a bunch of bottles.  Their bartenders have a good amount of welcome attitude and are quick with recommendations.  Keep an eye on their website for their latest and greatest beers, events and for which games they're going to show.

The dog park's usually filled with a bunch of great pooches and owners.  In the last week, I've noticed more pit/pit mixes around and one of them attacked my dog. She got a wound by her ear and was grazed across the cheek.  From that encounter, she developed an abscess and had to be taken to the vet.  There's so many great dogs out there but don't let your guard down.

Most of the time I make it to the fields, it's in conjunction with a trip to the library.  My favorite part of the area is the swing set.  It's one of the better setups that I've used and includes a tire swing.  If you get too enthusiastic and crash out, there's a pretty wide fall zone with a cushy landing.  What can I say?  I like to relive my youth.  I just make sure to enjoy my time on the swings with company because I don't want to look like a creeper.

Along those lines, this park is much better for active recreation rather than passive.  The park is very exposed because there aren't good shade trees present so you can't very well relax.  There are some shade structures but they are few and uncomfortable.  In addition to the benches under the structures, the only other major seating is by the jungle gym and swing set in the sun.

Pretty much every time I've been here there's a game going on whether it be basketball, softball, ultimate or soccer.  On these occasions parking gets a little difficult but remember that there's three lots (two off of Judicial Drive, one on Toscana) and street parking on Toscana.

Coop's West Texas Barbeque

Coops is set a few notches above the well known names in the San Diego bbq game.  I don't think it's even a matter of personal barbeque style preference.  There's just some objective things that elevates Coop's.

For one, they've got the most tender and juicy beef brisket and pulled pork I've had anywhere.  The fat on the pork was rendered perfectly and melts away in your mouth.  The meat falls apart so easily.

The other  standout aspect I noticed was that the natural smoke flavor was more pronounced than the other local places.

The fat, smoke and rubbed on flavors amount to my favorite bbq in S.D. county.

I had:

The Big Boy- asked for half brisket and half pulled pork http://www.yelp.com/bi....  It's piled onto a simple buttered, white roll.  The sandwich didn't need sauce but their in house sauces are wonderful.  Nice big portion sandwich.  The Little Boy is a quarter of the BB size.

with collard greens on the side http://www.yelp.com/bi... - not bitter at all.  Tangy and spicy

and a bit of red beans & rice - classic combo.  Not much to say except it was good

For dessert- Buttermilk pie http://www.yelp.com/bi... and peach cobbler http://www.yelp.com/bi....  the pie was mellow, creamy and dense.  I tasted the buttermilk and there was strong vanilla to it.  The crust edges were crisp.  The peach flavor was bright.  Nice amount of cinnamon.  Couldn't finish everything and tried the cobbler.  It had some noticeable smoke flavor imparted to it some how.

Great family business.  Lemon Groveians are blessed with a great restaurant.  Worth the drive and a wait.  But please boo-birds, kill the hype train and wait under the Phil's cam (I've still got love for Phil's) so I don't have to fight others for a pound of beef brisket the next time I visit.

Within the Laguna Mountain recreational area, you need to purchase a pass if you are planning to park anywhere within its borders.  Whether its to xski, sled, hike or grab a burger, to need to buy a pass.  If the visitors center is closed, there are a few other locations where they can be had and the Lodge is one of them.  They are five dollars.

The Lodge general store also sells groceries, sleds and memorabilia for your day around Mount Laguna.  There's a post office next door.

RJ is a great neighborhood liquor store.  Their beer selection will satisfy most, leaving the nerdiest of beer nerds wanting more obscure bottles to choose from.  Beer nerd heaven in a liquor store is a place like Clem's in Kensington.

RJ's got all of the big national bottles, some of the more prolific local offerings on and delves a bit into the craft beer.

On the wine side, they've got everyday to special occasion stuff.  If you buy six bottles, there's a discount.

Cold boxes cover pretty all of three of the the four walls of the store.

The counter guy was nice.  There's a dollar fee for getting cash back.

El Rey Taco Shop

I read the reviews and I think the majority of them mentioned 'the wait'.  Naturally after ordering, I watched my cell phone clock.  Ten minutes.

The taco shop is small and has four tables that seat eight people and a cold case in the waiting area.  There's a 5 gallon bucket of guac-salsa in the coId case isn't for sale.  If there isn't any seating available Cadman is close by and has great ocean views.

I had a TJ hot dog, carne asada taco and carnitas taco.

Their TJ hot dog is one of two that I've ever had.  The other one was from Lucha Libre and El Rey's was much better than the LL's.  The hot dog was bigger and tasted better, the bacon was crisper and the rest of the toppings were tastier.  Plenty of mayo and mustard.

Both of the tacos had great guacamole and tortillas.  Neither tasted very marinated though the meat and char was satisfying.

Nice new place.

The owners offer only a few appointments a day and you can reserve a spot easily over the phone.  Should they not pick up, leave a message with you preferred day and time and unless they call you back, assume that spot's yours.

Drop off your animal, have a few hours to yourself and pick them up.  It's easy.

There's not much to grooming my dog and I don't have a stylish look in mind.  I just like clean and combed out.

For that, easy service and the pink ribbons they tie on her collar and harness, I am a fan.

I ordered a bag of  Black Cat espresso and  house blend for some every day brew.

The black cat was surprisingly citrusy, tangy, floral and bright.  I usually get caramelly and darker tones from the espresso I usually get locally.  It is different and I liked it.

Their house blend is light bodied and also citrusy.  I've had it as my daily cup and in a recipe for a blackout chocolate cake.  French pressed, the coffee flavor was obvious but didn't over power the chocolate flavors.

The delicate character of Intelligentsia's coffee has me trying to detect nuances; it doesn't bull rush you.  The house blend is a tea-like coffee.

For Christmas I received sixty dollars worth of Sbux gift cards.  I do like to grab a venti cup once in awhile but I wanted to stretch my dollar and used the last of my gift cards' balance to purchase some beans.

I chose a bag of Pike Place roast and Guatemalan Casi Cielo.  So far I've only tried the Pikes Place.  Not bad at all.  It makes a medium bodied and bold flavored cup.

Thanks to Starbucks ubiquitous presence and loved ones' knowledge of my coffee love, I'll be covered on the coffee bean front for conservatively, two months.
