Literally, you're driving down CA-29 and all you can see on either side of the highway for miles are vineyards. All of a sudden a sign for "grass fed beef" pops up out of nowhere. We had to check it out.
Not far from the road are a few parking spots followed by an oasis like open-air pavilion. It turns out that LMR (which began as a vineyard 20 years ago) started an organic farm on a few acres and now sells their products directly at the edge of their farm. They also sell at the local farmers market and directly to some Napa restaurants.
Their selection of produce was amazing - onions, heirloom tomatoes, swiss chard, squash, etc. - all local, organic and sustainably grown! If I lived in Napa, I'd shop here everyday.
The also had 2 huge frezer cases full of vacuum packed and frozen 100% grass feed beef. Their cattle are scottish highland hairy coos and so they naturally run leaner since their don't need to carry as much fat due to their insulating hair.
LMR farms is owned by a husband and wife who also own a vineyard and olive orchard in which they produce a few organic varieties of both. Very Joel Salatain / Polyface farms + wine and olive oil with a California twist -- read Omnivores Dilemma / see Food Inc. for more about that.
They also have a few dozen chickens who live in a very large house, shaded by an almond tree and were eating tons of vegetables when I was there. They have tons of room to run around and get 14 hours of sun light per day. I haven't tried their eggs yet, but I bet they're great.
I'm going back here every time I'm somewhere near St. Helena! It's great change of pace from the mega and boutique wine only vineyards. Oh and you can also take tours of their farm, their vineyard/ranch either by foot or by jeep.
