My favorite cake combo ever is chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting, and Muddy's offering, the Capote does not disappoint. By far one of the best, moistest chocolate cakes I've ever had.
I tried two other flavors that I hadn't tried on my previous visit, the Pucker Up (tart lemon cake with lemon buttercream) and Strawberry Fields Forever (strawberry cake with strawberry buttercream) and was not disappointed. The Pucker Up was to die for.
Gotta give 5 stars to the service too, I came around 7PM and it appeared Strawberry Fields Forever was sold out but the lady helping me went back and found a strawberry cupcake for me and frosted it then & there!
One things for sure...I'll be going back for thirds when in Memphis again in January!

What's a girl to do when traveling alone on business on her birthday? FInd a fabulous bakery and get some cupcakes!
Muddys is a little hard to find, and not near my hotel at all (staying downtown) but it was sure worth the trip.
I couldn't decide on one flavor and wanted to branch out from my usual vanilla/vanilla and ended up with the following (not all eaten at once!):
Plain Jane- Vanilla cake w/ vanilla buttercream icing
Grasshopper- Chocolate cake w/ mint buttercream icing
Pink Lady- Chocolate cake w/ strawberry buttercream icing
Hubba Hubba- Lemon cake w/ lemon buttercream icing and coconut flakes
I am glad I branched out a little because the Hubba Hubba and Grasshopper were my favorites!
The Pink Lady was pretty but the strawberry icing didn't do much for me.
Both of the cupcakes with chocolate cake had some of the best, moistest cake I've ever had.
The Plain Jane was good...if I had to compare I'd say much better than Crumbs, not quite as good as Magnolia.
For $1.50 each, you can't go wrong!
Anyways, the food at this place was fab. My coworker and I tried a bunch of appetizers...gyoza, spring rolls, edamame. The gyoza and spring rolls came out hot & crispy.
For my entree I got the Pad See Ew with tofu and it was delicious! Lots of fresh veggies and a very flavorful sauce.
My coworker got a sushi roll and some pad thai for entree, she said both were good.
This hit the spot. Friendly service and reasonable prices...all that food was $65 with tip. Will definately be back when I go back to Memphis in January!

Once seated we started with the guacamole which was outstanding.
I ordered the chicken tacos and my friend ordered the fish tacos for entrees, and we got an order of mexican rice and brussel sprouts to share. Yup, you read that right...brussel sprouts. They were so good! Roasted with a spicy sauce that was just the right kick.
The tacos were amazing. I am not a huge mexican food fan but this restaurant might have changed my mind. Everything was so fresh and came out piping hot.
Service was quick but not rushed. Now, I could take a star off because when delivering our guac appetizer the waitress dropped the salsa which splattered on my friend but the situation was handled fairly well I thought. She apologized and brought over a napkin and glass of water and when our waiter saw what happened he apologized too and took the appetizer off our bill.
I was surprised how reasonable our bill was for so much food, $55+ tip (excluding the drinks we paid for at the bar), but I guess having the free appetizer helped!

The menu has tons of different options for meat eaters to vegetarians and even vegans.
I started out with the Fattoush salad which was amazing...so fresh and flavorful. Everything came together really well with this dish.
For my entree I actually ordered another appetizer, the sweet & sour scallops. The flavor was good, but the scallops were slighly overcooked for my liking.
Prices were reasonable for the portion. (appetizers $7-15; entrees $15-25 or so)
Service is where I had to take it down another star. Despite not being very crowded when we came in there was no hostess at the desk and we waited 3-5 minutes for someone to come over and seat us. Once we ordered things came out pretty quickly but then service lagged a little bit when getting our bill.
Overall, I'd go back because there were other interesting dishes on the menu and I liked their focus on fresh, local ingredients.

Their cocktail menu is amazing...25+ pages of classic cocktails! The bartenders are very knowledgeable and will give you suggestions or whip you up something custom based on your likes/dislikes.
I had a Ginger Rogers and enjoyed every last sip! Everything is so fresh and the stock the bar with whats in season. Pretty cool.
The atmosphere was dark and classic, almost mysterious. I tend to like more modern decor; but for this place, what they have works really well.
It wasn't that crowded, but it was early, on a holiday, in downtown San Fran...the bartender said they get pretty busy during weekday happy hours and then Fri/Sat late night.
I really want to go back!
I *really* wanted to LOVE this place....but unfortunately my first cupcake was sub-par.
"The Double Stuff" is cookies and cream flavored cake with buttercream icing and crushed oreos. Sounds delicious, right? Well the frosting was OK but the cake just didn't work for me. A little dry, and not really chocolate but not really vanilla...kind of flavorless.
Luckily they redeemed themselves with Love Ya Dolly (Lemon cake with Lemon Buttercream) and Mama's Most Delicious (Chocolate cake with Vanilla Buttercream)...both of these were much much better. Moist cake and delicious buttercream frosting.
They are pretty big for $2.50 each, and kept well, I had the latter two a day after I bought them.
The store is really cute and I had a nice conversation with the girl working there. I'd go back but would probably stick to the more mainstream flavors.

I don't know what's gotten into me lately but my favorite cupcakes have been fruit inspired ones! I had to try the Prom Queen (Strawberry cake with strawberry buttercream) and a mini vanilla/vanilla.
The Prom Queen was my favorite cupcake out of all 7 I had over my week of vacation. Really tasted like fresh strawberries in the cake, and the amount of frosting on the cake was just right.
Vanilla/vanilla was good too - you could see the vanilla bean flecks in the frosting and the cake was nice and moist.
Prices were middle of the road if I recall - I think my one regular size cupcake and one mini were about $4.50 all together.
This place is definately worth a stop!

My favorite cupcakes lately have been lemon, so I was excited to try Kara's Meyer Lemon...cake with tart lemon filling and lemon buttercream.
Ummm....why did the frosting taste like cream cheese to me? I am *not* much of a cream cheese frosting fan, so needless to say, I was rather disappointed. The cake itself didn't do much for me either, although the tart lemon filling was good.
I spent $3 for this cupcake and didn't even eat 1/2 of it. Oh well...
Why 3 stars? Well luckily, my friend Sara S. got a mini vanilla-vanilla and let me sample it and I was pleasantly surprised! Delicious!
I also really like that this place has TONS of flavors in the mini size ($2), not just the typical vanilla/vanilla, red velvet etc.
The store itself is pretty cute. Service wasn't that great, mainly because we got there about 2 minutes after a group of about 10 teenage girls who couldn't make up their mind! The staff were friendly though.
They have a pretty extensive menu so I'd go back, just not for the Meyer Lemon one!

I got the mint chocolate cupcake which was delicious! Chocolate cake with some chocolate chips, mint buttercream icing, an Andes chocolate, and some green sprinkles!
I agree with others that they might be a bit overpriced ($3.50 I think), but they are on the larger side (kinda like Crumbs) and I think this flavor is worth it.
My friend Sara S. had a chocolate peanut butter one and while she said the frosting was good, the cake itself was too plain. I sampled a piece and her chocolate cake was plain compared to mine...I think the addition of the chocolate chips in mine helped.
They have a frequent buyer card. Every $5 spent earns you one punch of the card...can't remember what you get as the perk though! Oops!
Staff were nice, they saw Sara S. and I running across the street grinning about Sara's find; we weren't planning on or expecting to go here. It was a nice surprise!
Date

When we sat down, it was next to the windows, which would normally be fine except a door to their patio was right next to us and there was a draft coming in. I ate with my coat on the whole time.
My appetizer and the bread were actually very good. I got the butternut squash ravioli with sage brown butter and it was cooked perfectly. A nice combination of sweet and savory.
I am not usually a seafood person but enjoy scallops and when I saw they came with asparagus risotto, it was a no brainer. The scallops were good - nice and brown on the outside but soft on the inside.
Unfortunately, the risotto was probably the worst thing I've ever been served in a restaurant....let's just say Gordan Ramsay would not approve. It was very bland (no seasoning/salt) and watery, not creamy how risotto should be.
Another thing I found odd is they serve barilla pasta. I'm sorry but if I want barilla pasta I'll stay home and cook it myself.
While our actual waitress was nice, and some of the food was good, I wouldn't go back..
