The Melt

The menu was fairly simple composed of 6 grilled cheese sandwiches (called melts), 5 soups, 3 sweet melts and drinks. I was expecting some highly creative sando options but you basically just choose a cheese and bread.

Since the menu was a bust I was hoping for a taste sensation. Unfortunately, that was also a disappointment. When biting into our sandwiches all we could taste was the cheese. The toppings were so sparse they disappeared completely. I was pumped that you could add bacon to anything for FREE (that should be a rule everywhere) but found you get what you pay for. It was razor thin, limp and flavorless.

I can easily make better grilled cheese at home on my favorite panini grill. I will say we enjoyed the corn soup.

Went back for a 2nd visit ...this time tried take-out. Ordered a half baked deep dish pizza and the butter lettuce salad.

Picking up my pie and baking at home was fast, easy and very tasty. It was super cheesy and the crust was awesome but don't waste your money on lots of toppings because they get buried in all the cheese. Better experience then eating in the restaurant. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Salads on both occasions were yummy and fresh.

I was counting the days till Patxi's opened. I had read stellar reviews of the other locations and was ready to have my deep dish mind blown.

Don't come here hungry or you might eat your hand. When we sat down and looked at the tables around us they looked as though they were on week 3 of Survivor.

We weren't starving but opted to split a salad to kill the time. Trust me you want to do the same. It was actually very good.

WARNING: they say 35-40 minutes for a deep dish. Try 55-60. Thin crust at the table next to us took 45.

How'd it taste? It wasn't really hot when it arrived but at least it wasn't super saucy like Zachary's. The crust was nice but the toppings didn't seem overly fresh.

Worth the wait? Probably not. If I go again it will be to pick up a pie to take back home.

I did love the GIANT TV in the back room...you need something to do while waiting to eat!

State Water Heaters

I'd give them zero stars if possible.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!

DO NOT BUY THEIR PRODUCTS.

Their water heaters are faulty (and they know it) but they don't stand by their warranties. They will do everything in their power to deny your claims and they will NEVER return your phone calls.

One person actually said she wanted to reject our claim because she didn't like the plumbers handwriting on our invoice (even though it was totally legible)!

I will never buy a State water heater again.

Chez Panisse Restaurant

Who knew that it was harder to get a reservation at Chez Panisse than the French Laundry? I had no idea that it was still so popular.

Our menu
An apéritif: Grapefruit champagne cocktail
Course 1: Bellwether Farms sheep's milk ricotta with fall vegetables and coriander vinaigrette
Course 2: Roasted halibut with savoy cabbage and lobster butter
Course 3: Spit-roasted Piedmontese beef rib eye with Beaujolais sauce, potato cake, chanterelles, and Cannard Farm salad
Course: 4 Black Mission fig tartlet with Chartreuse ice cream

Dishes were rustic and simply presented but service was a little stiff. I'm a meat and potatoes girl so course #3 was my favorite. They made beef melt in my mouth and a basic potato cake taste scrumptious. We loved our meal. Chez Panisse lost its Michelin star in 2011 to many people's dismay. If they are not deserving then I tend to question the guides' ratings because it was more than a meal, it was an experience.

Umami Burger

What we ordered: Umami burger, Manly burger and truffle fries.

When everything arrived I was surprised by the petite size of the burgers (they look larger in photos). I gotta be honest we were hungry... we downed our burgers within 4-5 bites so I can't give you a real in-depth evaluation. All I know was the Umami was sweet and had kind of an Asian vibe and the Manly had little yummy bacon lardons. Oh, and when I took my first bite my wedding ring was swimming in meat drippings (which was a good thing). The burger was cooked to perfection at medium rare which is their standard. It was JUICYLICIOUS!

The truffle cheese fries (not on the menu but should be) were great and not overly truffley. Skip the fancy sauces and use the ketchup!

Liked the local brew and wine but the food menu needs work. Not many choices and things they do have are bla. We ordered the sandwich (was ok) and the flatbread which was an appalling $11 for a toasted tortilla with barely any cheese. Bland and boring.

I would return for drinks but not food. If you are hungry walk a couple blocks to Enoteca.

Can't beat a donut shop that is walking distance from my house. The custard filled chocolate glazed donuts are my go-to choice.

Lamb Gyro was pretty darn good. Pita could of used a toss on the grill but other than that tasty. Combo with side salad & drink hit the spot.

Back again this time we actually sat down for dinner at a table instead of the bar. They now have a Michelin star so I guess things change...On a Friday night it was busy but not jam packed as I remember and the weird loud techno-ish music is long gone.

What we ordered:
*Grilled octopus -good cause it didn't taste like octopus
* Baby cauliflower (the server suggested it at least 3 times so I figured it had to be mind blowing) - it wasn't
*John Dory (wanted to try because I hear it on hell's kitchen all the time) - just ok
* Stone valley farm pig - hubby liked
* Chocolate cake with coffee pudding -best thing of the night!

The service was not bad but a bit rushed. We would have been in and out in an hour if we didn't put the breaks on and personally slow things down.

The only thing that wow'd me was the bill. I did not feel the food warranted the high price tag.

Always crowded, loud and expensive but have great appetizers. Try the fried cheese.
