Cutting Board

Stopped in here while waiting for our UPS package and WOW are we glad we did.

I had the Cutting Board Bento, which included a large piece of panko-fried whitefish, a panko-fried vegetable fritter, spicy tofu teriyaki, gzoya, oshinko, salad, and rice. The fried things were not greasy, and the gyoza was handmade from fresh ground pork and onions - which is rare in Seattle-area sushi joints, which often use frozen. The spicy tofu teriyaki was incredible: ever so lightly fried and sitting in an agedashi-like broth, except it was spicy! Great deal at $9.99.

My partner got a tempura shrimp + spicy yellowtail roll that was excellent. Best spicy yellowtail we've ever had.

Can't wait to go back and try more of their very long menu!

One of our weekend brunch standbys - the wait is never long, even at peak times.

The food: amazing. East Coast-style deli with West coast attitude.

Some favorites:
- tater tots are incredible
- latke sandwich. this is two latkes with bacon, egg, cheese, and tomato in between. there's nothing less kosher in the world but it is delicious.
- pastrami is great, especially on the PLT
- egg on bagel is tasty and a great value
- burgers are insane. try pastrami instead of bacon on yours - trust me.
- salmon scramble is top notch and served with a good traditional bagel
- brisket is great

The list could go on, I don't think we've ever had something we didn't like at Roxy's.

You can also buy a dozen (or half dozen) of their amazing bagels to go!

My favorite place in Seattle to get a Mocha, bar none. The baristas are great and it's a chill place to hang out too. Plus, the perfect outdoor seating for people-watching on 15th Ave E.

We go here a couple times a week - it's our neighborhood place!

Service is always excellent, though there's sometimes a wait, especially for weekend brunch. They seat you as quick as they can though.

Food is great. Try the calamari, or at lunch the calamari po boy is incredible. The tuna salad is the best we've had in town.

For dinner, we like the fish and chips and the coastal burger. Also check out the rotation "festival" menu. My partner loves their all day breakfast too!

Happy Hour 9-11 is fabulous - try the $3 fish tacos.

Slightly divey atmosphere is made up for by excellent banh mi, vegetarian pho, and fried rice. At least, those are our standbys.

Service is friendly and fast, if occasionally a bit confused.

People sometimes bring homework or laptops in here and hang out when it's not busy.

Open late!

We called and got a day-of appointment for two of us to use our LivingSocial coupons for Mani/Pedis. We didn't feel like we got any flak for using the LS coupons - so whatever the issue that people were seeing before seems to be fixed.

The girls were lovely - it was my partner's first pedicure and she LOVED it.

Worst delivery Chinese we've ever had in this city. And that's saying something.

We got:

Thai wings - tasted like burnt peanut oil

Egg rolls - made with stale wrappers, tasted like mildew

Hot and Sour Soup - fine.

General Tso's Chicken - passable, syrupy chicken. very bready.

Ginger Scallion Beef - low grade meat, almost no flavour despite the ginger and scallions

TEMPORARILY CLOSED FOR REMODEL. Reopens Sept 8th.

I live nearby and it's one of my default watering holes. Great cocktails (a tad expensive at ~$10 each), greater house-made veggie burger, best-evar truffle fries. And it's open until 3am!

The brunch options are pretty fabulous too. Try the cheesy biscuits, a ridiculous blend of herbs, eggs, and cheese atop perfect buttermilk biscuits.

If the patio is open, sit there. It's beautiful and quirky and wonderful.

Service is slow, there's no getting around that. Bring good company and just hang out - it's worth the wait.

Maria's Mexican Restaurant - CLOSED

AMAZING.

Arrived here with 8 smelly, exhausted friends after a weekend in the mountains. We were greeted enthusiastically by the host and his grandmother, who I believe is the main cook.

The first thing we noticed were the $3 margaritas, which come in a variety of flavors made from fresh fruit, not syrup (I got blackberry, followed by banana). Glorious!

We all ordered different dishes - I had the Aztec burrito, which was gigantic and covered in melted cheese and guacamole. Perfect mexican rice and lard-free refried beans were served alongside, along with a kind of crisp mexican-coleslaw-type-thing that was a pleasant textural contrast to the rest of the plate.

Others got carnitas, chile colorado, nachos, cheese enchiladas, Yucatan burrito, fajitas... everything was superb. Tortillas were handmade. Portions were large - even though I'd just hiked 14 miles, I could only finish half of my burrito and got to take the other half home for the next day's lunch. Yum!

The vegetarian in our group was happy, too - they don't use any lard in their cooking, and they have a good selection of vegetarian options.

I can't say enough about the friendliness of the staff; they made us feel right at home. They were eager to know what we thought of the food and the restaurant in general. The host brought us a special hot sauce his grandmother had just made from some weird peppers they'd just bought off a local farmer and it was amazing (and super hot). We actually packed it away in our doggy bags because it was so good, we want to try to cook with it this week.

We will definitely be back. Maria's is now our go-to spot for dinner on the way back from the Olympics.

Teriyaki Seven

Service was super-friendly and fast, but the chicken teriyaki was lackluster - sauce was too thick and too sweet, and chicken was a little dry. But it was a decent, filling meal for less than $6, which is not easy to find in that part of Madison valley.

If I go back, I'll try the tofu yakisoba that a previous reviewer recommends. I won't be trying the chicken teriyaki again.

Also, it's not closed due to run-in with cement truck. I ate there yesterday.
