Rainbow Donuts

Oh good, I'm a regular at a donut shop. I'm a pair of sweat pants, a NASCAR Snuggie and 11 cats away from spinsterhood.

Anyway, these are some pretty awesome donuts. If you're looking for doughnuts, you can take your extra consonants and vowel somewhere else, my friend. If you bring these to work, you may get a raise.

Apple fritters, cake donuts, glazed, jelly-filled... good stuff. But get there early because they're only open until 3pm during the week and on Saturday and 2pm on Sundays. Some weekdays, they are closed a bit earlier than 3pm (as I have had the misfortune of learning first hand).

Update - 11/12/2008
Another later visit a couple months ago, and once again my friends and I were ignored for quite a while before one of my friends got up to go ask for service. So, we don't really go there anymore. The food is pretty good though if you aren't worried about your waistline.

I gave Linda's another try after being personally invited back by Linda herself. I figure any restaurant owner that takes that much pride in their business deserves a second chance. I really wish I knew what happened the first time that set me and my friends in the vortex of no service, but the second time around, things were great.

The staff was attentive to me and my to my friends and to everyone around us. It was like being in a different place compared to the first time we were there. The food was great, and by the time we left, there was a line up at the door of people waiting to be seated. Friendly staff and a comfortable atmosphere. Definitely recommended.

I want to thank Amy and her staff and Linda for being so generous, hospitable and understanding. Thanks for showing me how things really are at Linda's!

GG's Teriyaki & Sushi

GG's is no longer a pasta and salad eatery. The new owners specialize in teriyaki and, more importantly to me, sushi. It's hard to find decent sushi in this town, and this place is probably your best bet aside from pre-packaged stuff at the grocery store. The Kamikaze Roll is a delicious spicy bit of tuna with onion and cucumber and is my new favorite roll to order. They also serve many other kinds of sushi for those braver than myself. I typically get the Teaka roll, which is just a tuna roll. Many varieties of teriyaki are available too.

My very first visit there, I ordered the Bento Box #3. It was massive. I am including a picture of it after I finish up this review, but it's money well spent and you get a wide variety of food to sample if you can't make up your mind.

I can't recommend this place enough.

La Tarasca

I'm lucky enough to live within walking distance of this place. I really should take advantage of that fact more often. This is a place not to be missed. Authentic family-made Mexican food. When I visited recently, the server started off describing the special of the day by saying "Today, my mother has made..." so you know it's got to be great! The tortillas are worth doing evil things for.

Thai Dish

I wouldn't know authentic Thai cuisine if I were in Thailand eating it, but this place is probably as close as I'll ever get without going to Thailand.

I've been many times and I have yet to write a review. I think the fact that I have been many times speaks for itself. I always try to sample something new while I am there, but I have my favorites that I keep going back to. The green curry is excellent. I also really enjoy the pad se ew.

Centralia is a bevy of chain restaurants, fast food places and gas stations. Places like this are a true rarity in a town like this. Plus living here for as long as I have, this particular location has never seemed to be too successful regardless of what business was actually occupying it. This one seems to have it down and it looks like hopefully it will be around for some time to come.

CJ's Eatery

My first exposure to CJ's was on St. Patrick's Day. Normally this wouldn't be such a big deal, but it so happened that day there was a run of some sort through that neighborhood. My friends and I walked in to find many be-spandexed people wearing green and waiting for a table. It was packed. We decided to rough it out and wait for a table. I had my doubts but after about 15 minutes, we got a table.

These guys know what they are doing. We got water and coffee right away, placed our orders and within about 10 minutes, were served. I was expecting a longer wait due to the influx of patrons who were in there because of the run, but they served us fast and were very friendly.
The food was great too.

I would go back anytime, hopefully when it's less busy but I don't think it would matter either way. Top notch service.

The chips and salsa are alright. The service was fair. The food was salty, salty, salty. I can not recommend this place.

Spiffy's Restaurant

Spiffy's is one of those places in which I find myself if I am on a road trip for the day and I get hungry for pie. I get there, feel guilty about wanting pie and never usually order the pie. Then I am so disappointed with what I do order that I don't go back for years until I've forgotten how bad it was before. The vicious cycle is complete.

I ordered a meatloaf sandwich with a side salad. I was disappointed to be served an order of salad dressing garnished with some lettuce and a soggy grilled meatloaf sandwich which nearly killed me later via indigestion. It tasted bland, but I was hungry.

The server also seemed... annoyed? Maybe she was busy, maybe they were understaffed for the night but she was fairly brusque.

The wallpaper in this place was something out of an old episode of "Dynasty" and it was red and green. Very Christmas-y and distracting. Shiny brass and wood light fixtures also gave it the feel of 1984. It needs a serious overhaul.

Maybe I'll update my review again when I find myself there in another six years.

Arby's Roast Beef Restaurant

One of my favorite Simpsons quotes is when the children of Springfield Elementary get stranded on an island a la "Lord of the Flies" Much discussion as to how hungry they are is voiced until the trump card is played and one of the kids says "I'm so hungry, I could eat at Arby's!" Groans of disbelief come from the other kids.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about Arby's too. I have heard too many horror stories from people who have worked there or know other people that worked there.... Arby's legends is what I call them. I just can't do it. The perfect spherical shape of the "roast beef" on the slicer is just a bit unnerving.

So why 2 stars? I love the Arby's Riverdancing monkey commercial. What can I say? I am a man of simple tastes. Arby's isn't one of them though.

Kit Carson Restaurant

Ah, Kit Carson. Older than I am probably. This place has always been around and it hasn't changed much over the years.

My family got together for a post-Christmas final outing before my Mom and brother had to go their respective ways back home. The food has always been good as long as I can remember. I go here sporadically and usually only because it's one of the few restaurants at which my grandparents will eat, so keep that in mind for what it's worth.

I had a sirloin steak with a baked potato. The pre-meal salad was a little long in the tooth. Some of the lettuce had begun to turn transparent. Plus the kitchen has a tendency to smother it with red onion rings, which I don't like. I gave them to my brother who had stank breath the rest of the night.

It has a homey kind of cozy atmosphere and the staff are friendly. Our server in particular was very good. Plus you can order sandwiches made on homemade bread. This bread is also served with most meals and has a sweet, fresh taste to it.

It's a good place to meet with a large group and there's even a bar in the back area where you can catch the game if that's your thing.
