Harley Farms
Categories: Cheese Shops, Farmers Market, Local Flavor
My wife planned a trip to Harley Farms to let our daughter "pet a baby goat." The forecast called for sunny and 76 degrees, so it was easy to say "yes," even though I was thinking, "Oh, no, a petting zoo." Well, I was totally wrong. What a great experience! Harley Farms is a gem, a boutique producer of world-class goat cheese, with an embrace of sustainability. The tour had just the right mix of unstructure interaction with the goats and guided introduction to the operations of a working farm. Everyone got to milk a goat, and the kids got to "make" a cheese (decorate it with edible flowers). It ended with eating the fresh chevre with locally baked bread in the loft of the farmhouse. The farm is minutes from the coast, so it was easy to combine the visit with a trip to the beach. I highly recommend Harley Farms for any family -- and for anyone reading Omnivore's Dilemma!

Quattro Restaurant and Bar
Categories: Italian, Breakfast & Brunch
Despite a somewhat sterile by-the-highway location, Quattro is beautifully appointed, as you would expect for a restaurant in a Four Seasons. The food is very nice (though better for the meat/seafood eaters than us vegetarians). Service is remarkably un-rushed. Great desserts.
Really awesome and unique Mexican restaurant. Great for lunch, especially outdoors on a warm day. Also great ambiance at night for dinner. Wonderful range of spicy salsas.
Amber is the best Indian restaurant I've ever eaten in. I used to work across the street from it, and no matter how many times I went there for lunch, the buffet was always different! Lots of great vegetarian dishes.

Awesome fresh beer, including cask-conditioned. Great atmosphere in a large, industrial brick building. Get a hand-pulled pint and slice of pizza and head out to the patio (if it's not raining). On my top 20 list of best places to have a pint.
Update: I wrote my review based on great memories from when I lived in Portland. I've since learned from other reviews that there was a significant remodeling in recent years. I assume the beer is still the same, but the ambiance is likely quite changed.

Vesuvio

If you're a fan of Kerouac, Ginsberg, or the Beat era, you must make a pilgrimage to Vesuvio, a bar that was at the center of it all, in the heart of North Beach.

Best place in Palo Alto area to have a pint, whether you work in tech or not. If you do, best place to overhear Facebook future product plans! ;^)
One of the best places on the planet for a pint or two. Incredible beer selection, including hand-pumped. Eclectic jukebox. Colorful characters on both sides of the bar. Plus it's located one of my favorite SF neighborhoods, gritty/funky Lower Haight.

The food was certainly good, a bit shy of great. The fresh guac was good and nicely presented. I tried the vegetarian tacos and was saitsfied, but not blown away.
Still, I'd rate the overall experience four stars.
