It's soul food that has a bit of a homemade feel, not in the cliche way that foods are so often described, but because your food won't be perfect but will taste cared for.
I most recently had their grilled salmon platter, a warm, buttery slice of big, thick bread, a heaping portion of macaroni and cheese and collard greens, yes, sweet, tasty collard greens.
Kenny's is a simple, neighborhood place tucked under the El in one of the most historic neighborhoods of an historic city, even if recent years haven't been kind to Frankford.
Still, Kenny's is a wonderful haven and a different taste in a different part of the city. It's definitely worth a trip Eastbound on the El.

Philadelphia Steak & Hoagie

The trouble is I love steaks, and I love hoagies. So I gotta really work at this. Been there a couple times: the steaks are scrumptious - though it's tough to compete with the legend of Philly - and the hoagies are appropriately packed and rounded - not the ovals you might find outside the 215. I am with Sam M. on that the fries are definitely the frozen bagged kind, even if I love french fries enough to love 'em anyway. You gotta love their Philly jerseys and photos, but a little outdated, no? We can work on that. Nothing to remember about service. Tasty, tho.

Sammy's Authentic Italian Restaurant

Whoa, I have no idea what's going on with the bad experiences, but I've been to Sammy's three times myself and each was great. Maybe coming from Philly gives me a bias, but I thought the prices were very reasonable - $12 entree - for a nice meal, great place for a date. It's right across from the Capitol so at night seats by the big window are spectacular. This is my favorite place in Harrisburg - hope the others give Sammy's another chance.
Seems out of place - off Restaurant Row on Second Street and instead tucked in a residential corner of Sixth Street - but the food is solid - the burgers are truly solid - and the atmosphere is awesome. It pays great homage to South Philly and its culture - even if that's waning.

If you're looking for presentation and Italian without football playing on a TV screen, don't go here. If you want good, cheap Italian in the North End, this is a good option.
The waitresses look like they've been there a while too, nearly as long as the seats, but all in all, a bit of a grandmotherly experience. Good and basic -- the eggplant parmasean and spaghetti was more than serviceable -- and friendly staff. Thanks.
