Rocket Dog Rescue
Category: Pet Services
Neighborhoods: Civic Center/Tenderloin, SOMA
His name is Pinto. Pinto is an 11 pound half chihuahua, half pug from Rocket Dog Rescue, and thankfully, he was saved from being euthanized by Pali, who is sort of an angel. She goes around town and saves dogs right before they're put down and gives them foster homes and real homes. Rumor has it her dog saved her from street life, so she's made saving dogs a full time passion.
RDR holds adoption events a few times a month, and while they're pretty crazy with all of the dogs running around, once they know you're serious about adoption they'll tell you everything you need to know about your new little guy. The handbook on their website has saved me from losing it quite a few times, and Pali even texted with me for a few days after I got Pinto to make sure he was okay.
For now, Pinto and I are in love. It's all sunshine and roses, people. Just one more happy couple!
Two pigs, taken down at Summit Farms just a day earlier and injected with brine for maximum tenderness roasted slowly under raging coals, emerging four hours later, meat juicy and skin browned to a crispy golden perfection. AJ cut off big hunks of meat with his butcher knife and others stuck their forks right in.
These Pig Eat Fest folks takes potlucks seriously. A few hours in I had already had 1 pork bun from AJ's family bakery, 1 Korean pork and eggs breakfast, 1 cup of white sangria, 2 fried chicken legs straight outta the turkey fryer, 1 brownie and 1 Anthony's Cookie. Totally stuck with the pig theme. Oink, oink!
I may never eat again, but hey, at least we raised some good moneys for SF Food Bank. Huzzah!

I have only tried one flavor, and one flavor is the only one I'll taste ever, and that is cardamom. It's exotic, and reminds me of the little cups of Arab coffee we used to take in Oman while sitting on the floor.
The peeps that work there are pretty cool, but they're not exactly the androgynous lovelies at Humphrey Slocombe that make me want to jump the counter and hump their designer denim clad leg.
No matter. Who needs eye candy when you've got the sweet stuff right there melting in your hand?

Bushi-Tei

The chef is Japanese, so I was expecting Japanese food with a French twist. Not so! Combine the rich, comforting quality of French food with a Californian dedication to using only the highest quality of produce and meats and a Japanese obsession with the simple and sublime, and you've got Bushi-Tei!
I thought I had died and gone to foodie heaven with the first spoonful of pumpkin with seared foie gras. The wagyu beef was another stand-out dish - frisee wrapped in strips of beef like a sushi roll, and topped topped with blue cheese. The black cod with lobster risotto was a delicious next course, with the wild fish contrasting perfectly with the creamy risotto. I'm afraid I may also have an ongoing passionate love affair with the beef, sexy and rare.
I cannot encourage you enough to check out the bathrooms. Sit down on your warm, techy Tokyo toilet seat and give that puppy a whirl. Just don't play with the buttons for too long... your food's waiting for you!

Dosa on Fillmore
Category: Indian
Neighborhoods: Pacific Heights, Japantown
Johnny of Absinthe put together their drink menu, and I can attest that it's one you won't easily get bored with. Luscious juices and exotic spices from other lands take your tongue on a wild ride through mysterious place and tempt you to order just. one. more.
Luckily, a round of frankies brought us back down to earth. I can see why this traditional Indian street food is so addictive. The roti bread was soft and warm and the sauce was comforting and tangy. The Mung Sprout salad was delicious and refreshing and the perfect counterpart to the lovely comfort food.
They should definitely jump on the street food bandwagon with a cocktails n' frankies cart, no? How does one get a license for a cocktail cart anyway? *sigh*

Who wouldda thunk they could have turned the old, crumbling Goodwill into the magnificent new Dosa? Upon walking in, I was blown away by its floor to ceiling windows, dramatic staircase and exotic decor, especially after visiting its cozy original location in the Mission.
Its sheer size makes it an excellent location for a big group celebration, and the restaurant was packed by 8 p.m. on a Monday with a whole smorgasbord of folks, from families to couples to girlfriends catching up over cocktails and indie film goers from Sundance across the street.
Of course, the wine list at Dosa is always most excellent. Our waitress was able to pair a lovely sauvignon blanc, light chardonnay and dry riesling with our courses with finesse. The reds did not match up so well however, and we concluded that Indian food and reds are like oil and water. Bleh.
The beet soup with crème fraîche was divine, the calamari was tender in a mildly-spiced coconut milk sauce, the vegetable curry was traditional perfection and the mustard fish entree sang sweet notes on my tongue. But of course, the masala dosa stole the show. Dip your dosa into the sambar and then into the tomato and coconut curry and drop into your mouth and repeat. Meditative, isn't it?
Pssst... their full bar is open Thursday through Saturday with bites from the kitchen until 12 a.m.. Movie and a cocktail, anyone?

Ryan Farr of 4505 Meats is teaching a sausage making class there next week, and other cool chefs and sommeliers are getting in on the action. Plus, every Thursday they have a meet and greet where you can sip wine and taste some of the organic, sustainable products they sell at Bi-Rite and meet the local artisans who invented them.
Tonight I saw the Meatpaper exhibit and got to meet some of the Bi-Rite family. Good times! I hear they may have a chicken slaughtering soon. Extreme? Yes. But for those seeking out a return to the pastoral, indubitably cathartic.
These guys are known for their known for their chardonnays and their pinots in terms of ratings, but the 2003 Grenache was a revelation in every sense of the word. I suppose it better be at $80 a bottle, not that I bought it. The dessert wine was also surprisingly delicious - it was like a ruby port with a nutty, tawny finish. Mmm, where are you chocolate?
The best winery in Edna Valley? I dunno. I gotta keep drinkin' my way around here to find out.

Bollyhood Café

But seeing as I'm not living in a film, I simply said, "The pineapple sake drink, please" and smiled at him politely. Because sadly, here in the real world, Bollyhood the bar lacks a little. The drink menu consists of juice and sake or champagne combos, neither of which does much for you when you're craving something interesting.
I'm almost positive those Bollywood dancers drink something much more much more hypnotic, otherwise, how could they go on for so long? *sigh* Next time I'll bring my flask.

Muni Riders with Drinks
Category: Local Flavor
Neighborhood: Mission
Popped collar dude sitting next to you on the 22 is encroaching your space. His balls are huge, apparently. So big, his leg has to rub all up on yours, and he seems to get closer with every jerk of the bus.
Have you ever had an experience on Muni so silly, unbelievable or disgusting, all of SF needs to know? Enter: Muni Riders with Drinks, a cathartic evening where ordinary folks share their tales of ridiculousness or revulsion to an adoring and understanding audience of public transport patrons.
The first one took place at the Make-Out room on Friday night, and it was insanely funny. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. I close this review with an excerpt from the Muni Diaries haiku series, and a warning to watch out for the MH:
I, Muni Humper
Filled with longing and despair
Are you my angel?

Cup one... "Yummm, this is delish." Cup two... "I can't even taste the alcohol." Cup three... conversation becomes divinely inspired and sort of giggly at the same time. Fast forward to cup six... gurgle, gurgle, glub, glub. I hear someone in the distant background say, "I think she's drowning."
Seriously though, you can't do much better than a bowl o' cocktail, and thank god no straws are involved like in the ol' Scorpion days. This is much more refined, dahlings. Not to mention, the owners have brought the mystique of Bourbon and Branch over, with worn wooden walls, dapper vested bartenders and romantic glowing lights.
Expect to run into frenemies, past lovers and all sorts of downtown folks here... the place is poppin' and it doesn't look to die down anytime soon. Besides, it's going to take us all at least a month to get through the 28 page leather bound drink menu.
