The Nosh

Category: Delis
Neighborhood: University City

I think this place needs to go more upscale to fit in with the neighborhood. CHOP is across the street - there are many professionals who gladly pay if the Nosh was like http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Instead I hear a lot of "mehs" from people in our building. For instance, a lox bagel should be packed high with lox and veggies and cost ~$10, not $2.50 with lox-speckled cream cheese.

We send our 8 month old here. The staff is very attentive and caring. They have a great play area setup for infants and it is very secure.

The webcam is a nice feature - we watch it all the time!

Salento

Category: Italian
Neighborhoods: Rittenhouse Square, Penn Center

The interior of Salento is kind of shabby, with some tired old tapestries strewn about the walls. The drop ceiling didn't help.

I thought the waiter was a bit rude to my mother, who is hard of hearing. He started to outright shout with megaphone hands when we asked him to speak up.

The prie fixe was a poor value so I went with the Pollo alla Griglia which was decent. The artichoke appetizer was very good. The other members of my party were satisfied as well.

If someone invited me to Salento I would go but there are better Italian restaurants in the city. However, one advantage of Salento is that parking on that section of Walnut is pretty easy.

The Gold Standard Cafe

Category: American (New)

I consider Gold Standard to be primarily a brunch place, and they do that really well. In terms of price, GS is more reasonable than Honey's, Estelle, Sabrina's, or Morning Glory. We have rarely cracked $20 for two. And unlike those places you won't have pay a homeless man to show up at 6AM to hold your place in line, and there is a lot of nice outdoor seating.

In terms of lunch GS is more hit or miss. I would say their turkey burger needs a little something on the top end like mustard. Never had dinner there. Good service.

Veterinary Hospital University of Pennsylvania

I refuse to believe this vet school is inherently greedy. The students are taught to run a comprehensive series of expensive tests to ensure their diagnoses are accurate. They care a great deal about the pets they treat. I don't believe there is a systemic motivation to overcharge because the students don't have an ulterior motive to cheat you. They just want to do a good job.

The bilking comes in when this vet school hires temps to cold call you six months down the road to pester you for donations. If you charge someone $750 to tell them there is nothing you can do for their cat, fine - that's medicine. But don't expect to hit us up for some kind of reward. Do some homework and find some loaded people with a pet you've successfully treated, or run a Barbaro campaign, or sell penn-only pet insurance, just don't call us.

This place sells itself as having an expansive list of beers on tap but the selection definitely leans toward flagships of larger imports and microbrews with the exception of several Dogfish taps. The turkey burger I had was just ok, nothing special. Decent service. Lots of business people here.

Slim's Downtown Distillery

Categories: Dive Bars, Music Venues

You might assume the "Downtown Distillery" in Slim's refers to industrial distillation used in the production of various petrochemicals such as kerosene, but the name actually stems from the large selection of spirits available from Slim's at decent prices. I wish I hadn't been the DD to this particular "DD" as the beer selection is not quite up to the same standards.

Another consequence of my poor decisions would prove to be a visit to Slim's homage to the world's greatest nation - urination. I've seen cleaner restrooms at the Philly greyhound station. There was so much piss on the floor that I feared using the urinal would give the impression that I didn't respect local customs. I tried to plant my feet on some less soaked spots and leaned over the length of the stall, held up by one arm and prayed my shoes would not give way.

Lessons learned: take cab, bring adult diaper.

Dark Horse Pub

The Dark Horse is a nice place and interesting from an architectural standpoint but the food prices are absurd. Isn't bar food supposed to be a loss leader? My table had a lot of fun reenacting that Wendy's library commercial, whispering "$8.99" over two miniature tacos.

Desi Chaat House

Neighborhoods: University City, Spruce Hill

If you're like me, you know it can feel like a waste of money buying something you can easily make at home, like a turkey sandwich. You will probably never have that feeling ordering from the Desi Chaat House. The delicious chaat plates are composed of long, weird indecipherable mixes of wet and dry ingredients that would take a couple confusing hours to find at the Dana Mandi. To stock a fresh supply of these ingredients at home would be onerous. So it is a nice addition to the neighborhood to have a take-out chaat place open up.

The Desi Chaat House is also a nice calm, quiet, and quick alternative to Kabobeesh, which is very crowded these days. I have never waited more that a couple minutes to have my order taken. Parking nearby can be tricky but not impossible.

Fantastic mango lassi and baklava. Very clean. Real friendly owner.

Lovers & Madmen

Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: University City

4.0 star rating

The best thing about Lovers and Madmen is that it has actually become a destination for crazy women, one of whom is already quite the surly morning fixture. I can only hope for her sake this influx will in turn attract more madmen and/or lovers.

I prefer early mornings for L&M. If you come later in the day you might find yourself competing for a table with boringly sane college students on laptops.

Decent coffee. Good croissants. Nice baristas.
