The Broken Spoke Café
Categories: American (Traditional), Breakfast & Brunch, Belgian
Neighborhood: Sixth Ward
Broken Spoke Cafe is on the east part of Washington, the one going downtown. As you enter, you will find bikes hanging from the walls, and murals of people riding bikes. They love bikes, so much so that there is a discount given to those who ride their bikes here.
Service is prompt and friendly. For those who remember Cafe Montrose, the husband-wife team split up and closed that establishment, but the wife teamed up with the owner of Broken Spoke, and so in Broken Spoke, aside from the fantastic burgers, you can relive the Belgian mussels, the fantastic fries, and yes, even the Crepe Normande. Bf and I split the onion soup and the mushroom toast for appetizers, and then for an entree, split a filet mignon. They were nice enough to split the entree for us and give us separate plates, with salad and fries, natch! The meat was juicy and tender, the salad fresh, and the fries, ohmygod, the fries: crisp and seasoned to perfection. We asked for mayonnaise to complete that Euro feel, and the mayo is good enough to make us think it's made in-house. To complement our meal, we had beer, which is the only alcoholic beverage they serve. I had the raspberry beer which was had a very sweet flavor, and bf had the blanche(sp?) which had a very delicate flavor. We later ordered their latest, the Witches' Brew, right in time for Halloween. It was a bit too big for a second round of drinks for us, so we were told we could bring the rest home, as long as it is in a brown paper bag! Just an FYI. For dessert, there was no more Crepe Normande to be had, so we tried the Crepe Mikado, which is with a chocolate sauce. They were good, too. I haven't had a dish I didn't like here; let's hope they keep it up! Show owner comment »

That for me is how to sum up Spanish Flowers. I am not a fan of the location as it gets a bit scary at night being a girl in that part of town, but otherwise, once my bf and I go inside the restaurant, we were warmly welcomed and promptly seated, given menus. A few seconds later we were asked what drinks we wanted! Service is prompt, to say the least, which is a plus. I think the owner may have served us: she was an older woman, but very warm. Service was so great, they packed our food up for us at the end: not may places do that anymore, so it's nice to be given that treatment. The food isn't exceptional, but the portions are pretty big, and the food is solidly average, so it'd be a good idea to bring a big group for sharing. Bf had the chicken mole enchiladas, while I had the caldo rez, which reminded me of a home-cooked meal. Tortilla chips and salsa served at the start are pretty good, too, the salsa especially, with the tartness just right. We had sopapillas for dessert, which were actually pretty good, crispness just right. They even have soymilk as an option for licuados, woot! Take note, they close early on Tuesdays; the other days they are open 24 hours. Would I come back here? Maybe; not my restaurant of choice, but it looks to be a reliable late-night staple, so why not.

Il Sogno was a last-minute decision for late Sunday brunch. And boy am I glad we chose to eat here. We were warmly greeted and welcomed, then seated right away. I hear dinner gets more hectic, though. Anyway. The decor is bright and almost spartan, very clean lines, and echoing Pearl Brewery's history, they have a beer bottle chandelier. Kudos to our server for answering all our questions and helping us choose our appetizers/entrees: it took us forever! I finally decided on the mozzarella burrata, while my bf had the rucola mushroom salad. His salad was light and crisp, while mine was perfectly cheesy with sweet tomatoes and nice balsamic vinegar to offset. For entrees I got the famous Margherita Pizza ( we are told that if you order it for dinner at 5:30 pm, you get it at that price, $5.31, and the price increases as the night goes on...!), while bf got the gnocchi, which he never had before. Both excellent. Dessert was tiramisu and bunet, we will try the famous nutella tart next time. I am impressed by this restaurant and highly recommend it to Italophiles everywhere.

Paloma Blanca Mexican Cuisine
Category: Mexican
Yelpers recommended this place and it looked a lot better, if not equal to a lot of the Riverwalk restaurant postings I saw. Plus versus Le Reve, we didn't need a reservation. Plus I wasn't in the mood for French cuisine: I wanted a nice homey atmosphere. And that is exactly what I got at Paloma Blanca. We got none of those screaming kids people were yelping about. We entered the lobby and saw this beautiful tree filled with paper doves. There was a man playing a guitar in the corner, a bit loud but very romantic. We opted to eat out on the patio; too late, after a while I was getting eaten alive by mosquitoes! Our server Moses was very accommodating and seated us at a table under a fan and near another one, telling the other servers to direct the food to our new table. The food itself was excellent: we had ceviche with saltines for an appetizer, while for entrees my bf had this chile relleno while I had this fish with rice and steamed vegetables, perfect. Dessert might have looked good with bunuelos among other things, but we opted out. We also had drinks: the bf a great "heights" margarita while I had a sangria. Excellent. I wouldn't mind coming back here. Yum.

My bf and I had just checked in at the hotel and it was late; not wanting to go to a restaurant on the River Walk and wanting something late (10+ pm) and not too far away from downtown, we decided to try this out. And boy are we glad we did!
There seemed to only be one server for the entire room, but he did a good albeit low-key job. Apart from the seemingly fresh bread served with butter, we ordered the goat cheese with morita sauce for an appetizer and oh wow was it good: might have that again next time! For entrees, my bf got the boar sausage with potatoes, while I got this tomato linguine. He liked his entree and mine; I was a bit underwhelmed, then again I was also very tired from the drive! Servings are huge, so we opted out for dessert. I also had this cool tea-ginger juice concoction; delicious. Cool slanty interiors with cozy lighting and great service; would love to come back here.

Located in the King William district near downtown San Antonio, this is a cute and quirky little coffee shop that serves great food, too. We tried their hummus and the bacon-wrapped artichoke for appetizers, and shared the Field Green Vegetarian salad for our main course. The hummus was AMAZING. Field Green salad was pretty good, too: fresh greens with a unique but good salad dressing with an elderflower tea-infused vinaigrette. Drinks were abundant: all kinds of tea and good coffee. Being a tea-house, they have a section of the menu for "high tea" and tea sammiches where you can have your very own tea party! There's also a kid's menu. They also have a mini-grocery where you can buy stuff by bulk! Very cool place to eat; there's free wifi too, I think. And outside, you can look at beautiful old houses. Nice neighborhood; would love to come back here!
