Eddie's Attic

Categories: Music Venues, American (Traditional)

4 star rating

I was walking around Decatur with a friend checking out the bookstores when we decided to eat lunch here. The food and drinks were really cheap and good, especially the beignets. Yes, we are far from New Orleands and the beignets were surprisingly good.  It was open mic night that time, so I didn't realize Eddie's Attic was a historic spot for live music.  So I went back to check out Texas band Jack- O- Pierce.  The performance was awesome.  Small, intimate, and unplugged. It's live music in the purest form.  The room is very crowded, so I would pay the extra money for the table. We stood in the back even though we got there early because it was so packed, but we still could see and hear perfectly.  JOP really played to the crowd and were surprisingly funny.  Although I hadn't been a JOP fan since college, I'm in love all over again!

Walking by you would never know this is a 100+ year old hotel. Until you walk inside and see the balconies and chandaliers. There is a difference in ambiance between eating inside and outside.  We ate inside. It's not a quaint, romantic setting even with the low lighting and bottles of champaign displayed in the window.  The two-seater tables were large and because the space is so old, it's very loud inside. It's a great restaurant for big parties.  The crowd is a little older, but it goes with the ambiance.  Pictures of rat pack-era bands doesn't really scream modern.  Now for the food... four words:  melt in your mouth.  We tried the duck croquettes with rasberry sauce for appetizer, atlantic halibut, and berkshire pork for entree. All was scrumptious and perfect.  The waiter was very helpful with wine choices and with dinner choices. He was spot on.  I just wish I had room for dessert.

You don't have to be a die-hard jazz fan to appreciate this little place.   It's an intimate setting for live music. Who doesn't like that?  You're up close and personal with the musicians and with the other tables in the room. So don't bring your gigantic purse :)  And bring breath mints because the tables are small.  You may want to get there early if you have a big party.  There were a couple unknown singers in the audience who were allowed to take the stage. And I tell you what, they were just as talented as the pros.  I even recognized a few songs they sang.  I came on a Tuesday night, so it wasn't packed. But I hear if you go on a weekend you have to have a reservation.  I'm making a reservation.

Where else can you watch the amazing Jersey Boys live on stage one week, the 20th anniversary of Do The Right Thing with Spike Lee in the audience the next week, and then attend a showing of the always- in- style Breakfast at Tiffany's another week?  It is definitely one of Atlanta's jewels.  Parking is a pain, so try to walk or take Marta.  But it's worth it.  It's a must-do for anyone living or visiting Atlanta.

AltoRex

This is the bar inside a restaurant inside a hotel. Yes, I was confused too. But AltoRex is worth finding.  It's an outdoor bar with very comfortable seating and fire pits.   Yes, the fire pits were lit in July!  And it actually felt great because of the freak "cold" front we had last week.  It's not on the roof of the Hotel Palomar, it's on the 5th floor, but you still have a good view of Midtown.  The drinks are a little pricey, but refreshingly unique.

Bacchanalia

How do you give 1/2 stars on yelp???? I say Bacchanalia is a 41/2.  It's fine dining, but not mouth-watering, knock me off my chair amazing.  Although the dessert "gifts" from the chef could be considered that.  I can't remember what I had, but I do know I ordered stuff I never thought I'd eat -and liked.  Don't be disappointed with the small portions, the artistry in the display is worth it.  And I found myself eating slower, and thus getting surprisingly full.  The service, of course, is stellar. I  am surprised, though, that  they didn't offer me a black linen napkin instead of the white one.  Even Seasons 52 does that.  I was wearing a black dress, so you would think it was automatic. Attention to detail, people.  I've also never seen a fine-dining restaurant with a gift shop and the Abbattour ( I call it a butcher shop.)  I am all for supporting local foods, wines, and products, but it takes away from the elegance.

Because of the economy, I would think the wait would've been shorter, but this place was packed!! and I can definitely see why.  Breads, cupcakes, muffins, oh my!   This isn't just a a bakery, though, but one of the best places for breakfast and brunch.  The menu items were so unique. The sweet potato pancakes were to die for. But if you don't like sweet breakfast items, check out the crabcakes benedict.  You can build your own omelet or breakfast sandwich.  I love this area of the Highlands, too.  It's quiet with ecclectic customers.

Best holiday party in the past few years! I don't think the other parties I'm scheduled to attend can top it! Thanks Deanna for lining up awesome vendors and for going out with a she-bang! Such great food, drink, and events. There was something for every one!

Salon Modello

Category: Hair Salons

5 star rating
 Update - 11/20/2008
I'm writing a second review for Salon Modello because they now provide hair extensions.  I've received highlights and cuts, but never extensions. I believe this is one of the few places in town that provides the acryic glue extensions for Caucasian women. I looked online and only found people who would be willing to do them inside their home, not at a professional salon.  I'm so happy with how they look and you will be too!

I'm changing my review of James Madison Salon because all the great colorists and stylists who used to work there are now at Salon Modello!  Plus the cat is out of the bag now about how rude and mean James is to his employees. I've heard him say catty things in front of the clients, but I never knew how hostile of a work environment it was until now!  Aaron opened up Salon Modello and took the best of the best with him -  like Jamie and Christina.  Those girls are worth the change of location.  Anyone who tries to sub for them never quite gets it right.  And how exciting is that to be part of a brand new business? The location is quaint and quiet - no loud music pumping through a large, empty salon.  You can actually talk above the hair dryers.   Salon Modello will also honor my CNN discount every visit- where I had to fight James Madison to let me use it once.   I wish Aaron all the luck in the world!

Yelp Elite @ LIT Kitchen

It was really cool of LIT kitchen to do the yelp kitchen wars. It was entertaining! LIT isn't just a place you can rent for parties and such, but it's a good place for team-building activities. Come on, there's a huge kitchen at your disposal!  If you haven't checked out the place in the past couple months, give it a second look. The decor is up and it looks ten times better than it did a few months ago.  Loved the 80's style games on the tables and the free sangrias.  And the fajitas they made for us were great.  I think this is the first yelp event where I arrived starving and left very full.  Thanks Deanna and LIT for another yelptastic event!!!
