Fabio's Tropical Ices

I discovered Fabio's on my way to another nearby gastronomic gem, Bab al Yemen. I did not want ice cream right before dinner, and I had already had two ice creams that day (I love ice cream). I vowed to return to Fabio's.

Today is Sunday. I called Fabio's before leaving. No answer. Blinded by my desire to try Fabio's, I still told myself it would secretly open. I ran seven miles to the ice cream store from my apartment in Manhattan.

CLOSED!!! I will have to try again tomorrow... Sigh!

Pause Cafe has recently taken over Piada Cafe (no affiliation). While most of the panini are gone, there are now all sorts of smoothies and cookies. The cafe looks a lot nicer, too, with warm wood paneling. I tried the coconut smoothie and it was delicious! Plus, the smoothies come in small, medium, and large sizes, which is great for when you only want something small. I am loco for coco. Will have to go back again to decide whether I am loco for Pause (sadly, just doesn't have the same ring to it).

Truly delicious ice cream. I only take away one star for the price - $3.50 for one scoop, $5.00 for two scoops, plus an extra $1.00 for a cone? A little exorbitant, even for Brentwood. Ice cream should be an affordable luxury!

Regardless of the price, I enjoyed the ice cream. It had a really creamy texture and was ever-so melty, just how I like it. You are only allowed two samples a person, so I tried the salted caramel and the toasted almond. When you try the salted caramel, they even sprinkle some fleur de sel on top - nice touch. I ended up buying a two-scoop cone of fresh mint with chocolate chip and salted caramel. The fresh mint with chocolate chip was a real winner. The mint flavor was so strong and fresh. At times I felt like I was eating a bunch of mint pulled from an herb garden one minute prior. The ice cream really blows any other kind of mint ice cream out of the water. The cone was yummy, although parts of it were a little bit soft. I like my cones a little crispier. It would be nice if they put a bit of chocolate at the bottom like they do at Ici in Berkeley and like how the Drumstick company does it..haha.

Anyway, I'll definitely be going back to try their other flavors. I hope they have coconut next time. They also serve bon bons and ice cream sandwiches, but they were sold out, and I was there at 2pm (and they open at 12). So the lesson is, get there early!

in the chicken wrap.

Baklava is amaaazing.. so flaky.. not too sticky or gummy, as I have found others to be.

Oh, and the free lentil rice soup is delicious. I also tried the babba ghannouj, which was pretty good. The food is so filling, so I might pass on an appetizer next time because the soup + wrap is enough! Also they give you a free baklava after your meal!! So sweet :)

The food here is really great. I ate at Dosa before, which is a bit more upscale of an experience, but I feel like Udupi Palace is more authentic. First off, the service is really attentive. We ordered the utthapa (sp?) with mixed vegetables, which was delicious. I think it even had bits of shredded coconut in it (my favorite), along with peas, tomatoes, etc. Great flavors and texture. We also got the onion dosa which was stuffed with a massive amount of potatoes and grilled onions. The flavors were great, not too spicy or anything. Both dishes came with three types of chutneys on the side (mint, coconut, and tomato or something or other), and some kind of tomato-flavored dipping sauce. There ended up being more than enough food for two people, especially since the stuffed dosa is so filling. I would definitely recommend ordering one of the utthapa too. Next time I want to try the large dosa, because I saw them being served and they were SO BIG!

Total bill was $20 including tip. Delicious, and I would definitely come here again!!

Open late... quick and friendly service.. Warm and toasty naan... I had some ground chicken dish (aloo ?) with ginger and other herbs, and it had wonderful, sumptuous flavors. I liked the food at this location better than the one in the Tenderloin, but perhaps I just ordered the wrong thing there. I would definitely come to this one again. Only suggestion is that they paint the walls a more vibrant color (red? orange? mahogany?)

This place has the best coconut muffins ever. COCONUT Yum! They are big and fluffy.. Kind of $$ at 1.75 a pop but you can taste the coconut flakes in it and the crust is sooo good. Lemon tarts here are also quite delectable - tart and tangy!

Finally tried the hot dogs here, on there $1 Mondays. It was really mediocre. I guess that's what hot dogs are...mediocre. I had the poppy seed bun, and it was warm, but I wish it were toastier on the outside. Chipotle chili sauce on top was flavorful. Well, I did get what I paid for... $1... and I would not pay anything more.

They have nice Moroccan mint tea (from a bag). Honestly, I find there is nothing really special about this place. I find the ambience to be rather sterile? And the service is not too warm. I like the feel of Iso Cafe better.

This place is really fun. Their pulled chicken is delicious, and the sauce (I got the spicy one) is yummy. I absolutely loved their big crispy hush puppies too. I have only had hush puppies here and in the UCLA dining hall, and these are much much better. Next time I go here, I'll order the pulled chicken and 10 sides of hush puppies. I also tried the mac & cheese (pretty good), the chili (just meh), and the french fries with blue cheese (delicious.. one fry fits right into your carotid artery.)
