Subway

Same old Subway, but in a nice Downtown location. If I worked in Downtown Phoenix on a regular basis, this would be my go-to Subway on days that I felt like the so-so Sandwich. Subways are all the same, but you know what you're getting and for that, they are A-OK. The sandwich will never blow your mind, but it will also fill you up and give you the fuel you need to get through the day. They do an excellent job offering food at reasonable prices (often times with a nice discount promo) and I can leave with a 6 inch sub, bag of chips and large soda for under $6. Cheap, fast and decent? I'll take it!

Mill Avenue District

Update - 1/23/2012
I have to give Mille Avenue a positive up for the mere fact that they might be the only district in the Valley that have adopted parking meters with an option to pay by credit card! It's great. I can't count the number of times that I need to park in a meter but lack the change needed. However, with these meters, all I had to do was swipe my card and poof! I was able to put time on the meter.

For those looking for a rowdy night on the town in a college setting, a very diverse crowd or you simply want to cheer on the Sun Devils, this is your spot. Mill is lively, it's got a lot going on, the streets are lined with restaurants, bars and shops and your bound to leave Mill with a story. But, if you aren't ready for a Vegas-style night in a very young (early 20's) setting, this might not be your spot.

Like Emma W said, I am also reviewing Mill as a whole. I have been to several places on Mill that I like and several that I dislike. For those reasons, I am giving it a solid three stars.

I like restaurants such as Canteen, Cafe Boa, Gordon Beirsch, Rula Bula, La Bocca and a couple others. I'm not a fan of any of the bars on Mill but was and would be if I was still in college or in that mind set. If I was going to visit a bar on Mill, I would go to the Big Bang piano bar for some live piano music, but be warned that it gets really crowded. I like that Tempe Town Lake is near the Mill District and they host lively concerts, block parties and races. They also have sail boating and paddle boating. And finally, I like that Mill Ave has a lively vibe where I know that no matter when I visit Mill, it was always have a group of interesting visitors.

I don't like how dirty, crowded, rowdy and out of control Mill can get on any college game day or at night. I try to avoid Mill at night at all costs because like I mentioned above, I'm not college age anymore. If you go to Mill, I suggest you go during the day or if you go at night, be prepared.

Goldmans Deli

Goldman's is a prime example of a delicious deli that was hiding right in front of my face! Yes, I've passed by Goldman's hundreds of times and it's a small sin that it took me this long to step foot inside. But, now I have and I am happy to report that this is going to be added to my rotation immediately!

First, I like that Goldman's has some serious pride in their love of Chicago. It's nice to see a deli with some passion and this deli is definitely passionate about their food and the Windy City. The menu has it all...burgers and grilled cheese to brisket and pastrami. Let's not also forget about matzah ball soup and other classic Jewish deli cuisine. I decided to try their famous hot pastrami sandwich. My bf has the brisket so I was able to try both! I think I liked the brisket better then the pastrami but the pastrami was also delicious. The food is definitely meat happy so come with an appetite or you'll be leaving half the sandwich on the plate like me. I don't think I would stay and eat here, but it's a very worth deli for on the go!

PS -- they also serve breakfast starting at 8 AM!

GreenMix

The Valley could use more fresh in and out options like this! While in Downtown Phoenix for a meeting this weekend, lunch hour hit and I needed a healthy meal on the run. Enter GreenMix! As I walked in, I experience a bit of menu anxiety since it was my first visit and I wasn't sure what to expect. However, the staff was friendly and once they learned I was a first timer, the guy walked me through the steps. I decided to go with a salad, so I first choice the type of greens, followed by four additions from the bowls filled with veggies and cheese. This salad would be $5.99. They also had other bowls full of avocado, eggs, etc. However, those were 75 cents extra per topping. I'm a sucker for avocado so I decided it was work the three quarters. I also ended up adding chicken which was another $2. I ended up walking away with a hefty salad and soda for under $10. It's not cheap, but worth it for a fresh salad topped with added items! I will definitely visit again and keep my finger's crossed that they will open up more locations in the Valley.

Yogurtopia

If you ask me, the Valley could always use another frozen yogurt shop. Why? Well, when it hits June and the temperature screams 120, would you rather drive across town just to cool yourself down with some frozen yogurt, or would you prefer to visit a frozen yogurt shop that's in your neighborhood? I'd take the latter. Luckily, I also consider Yogurtopia to be just in the outskirts of "my area."

I enjoy this frozen yogurt shop because it's clean, trendy, they have nice flavors and a heaping amount of toppings to choose from. Located right next to Wildflower Bread Company, they couldn't have picked a more suitable location because I can't count the number of times I've been craving a sweet treat after lunch and stopped into Yogurtopia. They keep the store clean and they don't usually have melted yogurt lingering around the edges of the soft serve area.

Pga Tour Superstore

I am not a golfer, however after stepping foot into the PGA Tour Superstore, I would become a golfer just to have the excuse to shop here! This store has it all and I mean everything. While I am not currently a golfer, I hope to call myself one (or kind of one) after taking the lessons I purchased through a local golf course. Since I am about to start golf lessons, I needed of a pair of golf shoes. Before searching for the golf shoes, I spent some time browsing through the entire store. They aren't exaggerating when they call this a superstore. It's filled with golf clubs, golf accessories, golf clothes, a putting green to test out the products and unique finds such as golf covers from different colleges...you name it, they've got it.

Let's get back to the shoes. Since I am not a golfer, I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg on golf shoes, but I felt that it was important to own a pair. Luckily, this store allowed me to stay within my budget and walk away with a nice (and really cute... I am a girl after all) pair of Nike golf shoes. They were on major clearance at around 40-50% off. Perfect for what I was looking for! Plus, when I graduate from not being a golfer to being a golfer, I will revisit this store for some new golf clothes and accessories such as a Wilbur the U of A Wildcat golf head cover!

In summary, if uou are a golfer or have a golfer in your life, this store must be added to your list of places to visit.

Scottsdale Quarter

Category: Shopping Centers

3.0 star rating
Update - 1/16/2012
Scottsdale Quarter is starting to thrive with a long list of retailers. The list include shops such as:

H & M, Sephora, H & M, Nike Store, Brookstone (I believe this is coming soon), Express, Gap, West Elm, ItSugar, Pottery Barn and some clothing boutique. Restaurant-wise, there are plenty to choose from including Prime Bar, Dominques, Tanzy, Brio, Grimaldis and True Food (to name a few). They have a good amount of businesses at the Quarter, but I still feel like everything is a tad too cramped and it's a little confusing making your way up on alley and into the next. However, the most disappointing aspect of the Quarter is the lack of parking. There are barely any street-level parking spots which means that unless you have been graced by the parking-luck fairy, you'll be driving deep underground to find a spot in the garage. The whole process to park at the Quarter makes it nearly impossible to "run in and out" to make a return, grab a quick charger from the Apple store or pick up a makeup product from Sephora. Because of the parking situation, this isn't your shopping mall where you can "just quickly stop by" but instead, be prepared to spend about 10 minutes parking before you start your Quarter experience.

Well, I finally have a better idea of the goal behind Scottsdale Quarter. During construction of the Quarter, they opened up a restaurant here and retail store there, but they never gave much indication on what was going to be placed in the middle. Now I know: a lot of restaurants, shopping and entertainment! I like.

Scottsdale Quarter really has it all. Shopping - both high end and low end, restaurants - both fine dining and average, snacks, coffee shops, home furniture, electronics, nightlife and yes, even a brand new state of the art theater! I could spend my entire Friday night here and have dinner, drinks, a movie and post-movie snack without moving my car.

Architecture-wise, they did a pretty decent job. The courtyard area in the middle of the Quarter really opened up the center and I like the water works surrounded by benches, chairs and even lounge chairs! At times, it feels a little cramped, but it's not unbearable and it also makes me feel like I'm in a very urban environment. Parking can be a bit of a pain, but I've learned to just accept defeat and park underground. I wish that they offered some "30 minute" parking options, especially since they have some "in and out" style shops - like fro yo and coffee. They have one or two loading zone parking spots but they are always taken so hopefully they add some more! I wouldn't choose Scottsdale Quarter for a quick trip because it would take twice as long to find parking alone, but if they change that I definitely will.

Between Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland across the street, this could be shopping and dining paradise. I hope that one day they create some sort of above ground walkway to go between the two shopping centers so that we can easily go back and forth without having to cross the busy intersection.

All-in-all, I'm very excited that Scottsdale Quarter has come to town. They've brought in some wonderful local businesses and popular chains and it is a great option for those in North Scottsdale.

Sephora

Although I live close to the Sephora at Fashion Square, I think I might just have to make the drive to the new location at the Scottsdale Quarter instead! This Sephora is brand new and they did a great job of making it spacious, organized and customer service oriented. The biggest hassle for me was finding parking at the Quarter but once I did, I browsed through Sephora with ease. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by a staffer who walked me to the area of the store I was searching for. I came to this location not only to check it out, but also before the Fashion Square one was out of some makeup I needed and they told me they wouldn't get more for another week! Luckily, this new Sephora didn't let me down! After finding the makeup I needed, I looked through the store. This is is definitely bigger than the Fashion Square location and it reminds me more of a Sephora you find in a "big city." I won't go too much more in depth because a Sephora is a Sephora, but they definitely did a good job organizing this store and I think this is just what the Scottsdale Quarter needed!

When a cold hits and the fuzziness sets in, all I want is soup and grilled cheese. Well, I find some great soup here! They have some of the best tomato basil around and it comes with a nice cheesy piece of bread. This combination is perfect for a cold day or a stuffy nose day!

When I'm doing retail therapy and hunger strikes on the Nordstrom side of the mall, I will sometimes choose the Cafe as a cuisine option. This isn't the spot I choose to have a leisurely luncheon with friends, but it is a good option to have a real meal in the midst of shopping.

I like the tomato soup, the paninis, the chicken club foccacia, the salads and when I'm really feeling naughty, the magic bars! The food is pretty middle of the road for pricing but the food you get is good. They have plenty of seating options so even if it's crowded, I still normally find a sea. The food comes out relatively fast. Sometimes I feel like I'm being pushed in and out by the wait staff, but that's only on rare occasion.

Sprouts Farmers Market

I wish there was a Sprouts closer to me, but when I need my Sprouts fix, this is my go-to location. Think of Sprouts like Whole Foods eclectic little brother. It's full of organic cuisine, some of which is really tasty and some that is just a little too, umm, organic for my liking. However, typically I find delicious eats here. They have great finds such as Walden Farms dressing that has zero calories and fat. Yum! They have tasty sandwiches, delicious (and organic) desserts, items perfect for any dietary restriction and plenty of snacks that will keep your tummy satisfied and your waistline small. That's all for me, but after writing this review, I realized that I need to pay a visit to Sprouts very soon!
