As I bit into my medium truffled mushroom burger, I turn to my girlfriend and said, "I think this is the best burger I've ever had in my life."

And it's true! Tastier and meatier than Shake Shack burgers, but not so enormous that you feel terrible afterwards. Just right. And a delicious bun too.

The homemade strawberry rhubarb pie for dessert was amazing as well, as were the roasted brussel sprouts with bacon appetizer. But the burger, mmm, the best!

Had the lechon, it was delicious, tasted like home even though my home (Philippines) is different from theirs. It was super cheap too, and you order by the pound! The sweet plantanos were super good as well. Ordering was kinda hard because my Spanish is pretty basic but I managed to get by.

I tried Malaysian food for the first time here, and I think I like it. I tried to find the dishes that I could most closely map to Filipino dishes, because our food is similar.

For appetizer, I went for the achat, which like this weird combo of achara plus kimchi. Didn't like it too much.

Then for my entree, I got eggplant with belachan. The menu called it Malaysian shrimp paste, and I was like hmm, I bet it's bagoong, and it was! I'm easily amused.

Anyway, the eggplant with belachan was really good, as was the rambutan drink (kind of like lychee)

Full disclosure: I'm a Filipino American who grew up on Filipino cooking, so I may be particularly critical.

So, whoever starts a Filipino restaurant in Manhattan that serves authentic (and well-made) Filipino food and makes at least some effort to provide a nice-looking eating environment will win the trendy foodies goldrush award. Foreals, Filipino food is so underrepresented and poorly marketed here that the first place that does it right is gonna win big.

Pistahan has very good food. I had the laing (taro leaves with coconut milk), inihaw ng bangus (grilled milkfish), and binagoonan (pork with shrimp paste). The laing and bangus were really delicious, but I think they mailed it in on the binagoonan. That's ok though.

The ambience, however, is terrible, especially for the prices of the dishes. It's a small place with cheap-looking tables and chairs. It's a shame, the look of the place is probably deterring curious eaters from an otherwise tasty eating experience.

It's nice that they have a ton of tables in different settings, but they should really hire more waitstaff. Must have waited 30 minutes to even get a drink menu. Also, the DJ upstairs changes songs too quickly. And he cut off Don't Stop Believing before the chorus, which is absolutely evil.

Bitching aside, I like this place. Not paying cover is cool, the interior is visually appealing, it's spacious, good looking crowd, not too pretentious, and the DJ plays decent music (Bonus points for Bell Biv Devoe and Lumidee, large minus for the aforementioned Journey-ending).

Some constructive criticism for the owners of Park if they read their own Yelp reviews:
* Hire more servers. If you need to, start charging a small cover. I'd be wiling to pay $5 if I get a drink at a table in under an hour.
* Get better speakers for the upstairs. That shit's got no bass at all.
* Tell the bartenders not to card. It's a waste of time if you already card at the door.
* Tell the DJ to let the songs ride out before switching. And don't cut off Journey. Srriously.

Really cozy atmosphere, delicious sangria, authentic(!) tasting caipirinhas, which is a rarity in NYC. I had the top sirloin, which was pretty decent, though I've had better.

I only stopped at this place to pee before getting on the PATH, but it seemed like a cozy lil spot, dimly lit with candles, stylish exposed brick and lots of liquor that I've never heard of before. I made a mental note to mayhaps bring a date here some time.

Decent place, nice cozy ambience. I broke out of my only-getting-Pad-Thai-at-thai-places routine and got the Drunken Noodles, mostly because I thought I'd get drunk, but turns out it it's just a spicy mei fun.

I freakin love this place. For some reason, it's like the Filipino's Chinese restaurant. This is the only restaurant that my family goes to in Chinatown, there's always tons of Filipinos here, and every Filipino in the tri-state area knows and loves Hop Kee. I guess it's a compliment, considering that us Filipinos love us some foods.

Back in high school, my friends and I would take the NJ Transit bus for an hour from Nowheresburb, NJ to The Big City just to eat here and buy fake watches in the area. Now we've graduated to taking a cab here at the wee hours of the morning after a long night of drinking. But we still order the same things as we've always ordered: squid with black bean sauce, pork chop peking style and beef chow fun. SO GOOD ONCE IT HITS YOUR LIPS.

Sometimes though, when we arrive too late, Hop Kee has already closed and we're forced to eat at Wo Hop, and that's when I weep softly to myself, because Wo Hop is no Hop Kee, not by a long shot.
