Beautiful sushi that could taste just a little bit better.
We've eaten here twice and it seems to have changed just a little bit since our last time. Not better, not worse...just different.
It's usually busy, probably because of the excellent location and facing (it faces the main drag coming into the mall parking lot near one of the main entrances) and the excellent work on the front of the restaurant. The inside shows well, too, although it's a bit small for more than a group of a few people. I would not consider bringing 10 or 20 family here.
The service is friendly and a couple of staff really try hard. However, overall, the service lacks polish and the timing could be better (eg. knowing when to come take the order, knowing when to come clear you out). In fact, I was almost going to overlook this point as it was at the edge of my "i better blog this" threshold, but the lady at the next table got up and asked if there was anyone around to take her order. There were several people 'around' I'm just not sure who or how duties are divided.
As for the food. The presentation is very nice. We had the Chicken Kara age appetizer as well as something called the SF Fire, which is a fried spicy tuna roll over a bed of spring mix & seaweed salad. We also had the rock and roll, and the Power of Love sushi roll.
On to how it tasted!
The SF Fire was tasty. The spicy sauce was just the right flavor and spiciness for me. I liked it. Unfortunately, and my wife didn't notice, I felt there was something 'fish' smelling and tasting in it. Not sure if it was the seaweed or the fish in the sushi but it was fishy, meaning old, meaning eew. Not enough to be "bad" just something kept talking to me in the back of my head that this wasn't super fresh. Maybe I'm being picky, but it jumped out at me every time I took a bite. If not for that, it would have been quite good.
The Chicken Kara age was tasty. It wasn't too salty or bland. The flavor was right. The chicken was tender too. The thing we didn't like about it was the crust was thin and a bit 'flat'. It wasn't light at all. Neither fluffy or super crunchy it was just there. A protective starchy shell around pretty decent tasting chicken. Again, it missed out on being very good because something we didn't like about it.
The Power of Love sushi was fine. No complaints. It tasted like giant fancy sushi with a fruit topping dabbled on it. I enjoyed it.
The rock and roll was the one dish easy to compare to other sushi places. It was solidly in the middle. Not great, not bad. It was just ok.
We ate on a Wednesday. Wednesdays, you can get beer or a small hot sake for $1.00. The sake was good.
We didn't have the bento box lunch, but the people at the next table did and the servings seemed ample.
We may try it again, but it's a bit expensive if it's not rocking the taste buds.

Too bad, too, as I used to like this place.
I returned there for the 4th or 5th time and have to say the place has really gone downhill.
When we arrived a waiter had to call the greeter to greet us. That's never a good sign, but I shrugged it off.
Outside, there was an A-Frame advertising happy hour sushi from $3.00 when we get our menus, there's nothing that started at $3.00. Closest was $3.50. We asked the waitress about it. She said the pricing was new and the board hadn't been updated. Still, they placed it outside. How long does it take to erase chalk and price it correctly? 50 cents? Meh who cares? I don't like being baited with false advertising, though.
On the happy hour menu they've got a few rolls. We ordered a couple rolls. The california rolls were not very good. The rice was hard and cold as if they came out of the refrigerator and the rolls had a day-old taste to them.
Off the happy hour menu we ordered the lobster roll. It came with that fake Krab stuff. I asked the waitress if there was any lobster in it, since it was a lobster roll. She responded that the sauce was made of langastinos (google that! they're not really lobsters). More bait and switch? I don't know. Maybe they use real lobsters. Can't tell (and that's the problem) as the rolls themselves are the fake krab stuff. Does it make a difference? It wasn't very good no matter how you slice it.
On the plus side, the chicken karaage was tasty and the waitress was friendly and polite. Not enough to counter the food, though.
As we left, the words came out that I really hate saying "we're not going back there again"
