You know how you have that one store you know will cheer you up when you're sad or don't know what else to do with your time (or is that just me)?  Well, this is it. Whether I'm in the mood for a great read, for some beautiful yarn, or to buy a little gift for myself (okay, or EVEN someone else), this is my go-to spot. You can tell that everything in the store is handpicked, and their vendors are great. This is the place to find the ideal gift for someone you love. Seriously, ANYONE you love. Happy shopping!

This is my dream come true- a store where I can buy beautiful yarn, gifts, and books all in one shop.  I have bought everything from a beautiful Indian tapestry for my wall to a tongue-in-cheek baby book gift ("Baby Fix My Car").

The owners are friendly and the selection they have is wide while being unique.  If there's something they don't carry, talk with them about it- they're constantly refreshing.

I always find something fun for myself here.  There are too many knick-knacks for you to walk away empty-handed.  It's a well-kept secret in SD, but every time I send people there they love it.

First Friday of each month the SD Writers Ink group (the local writing collective) do readings of their work, which draws a good crowd and can make for a fun evening.

Joey's Smokin' BBQ

Ever since going to Nashville last year, I've been on the lookout for a fun and delicious bbq spot in SD.  Combine it with a bar, and *now* we're talking. Joey's Smokin' BBQ and Doc's Saloon, you have my full attention!

Here's why I love this place: You always have that one friend (NOT NAMING NAMES) who skips barbeque to get grilled this or that or, to my shock, wants to eat something *green*.  I want to eat ribs, and someone's desire to be one with salad should not stand in my way, right?  Joey's has worked around this by offering a bistro menu for Healthkick Holly, so the rest of your group (read: me) doesn't have to pass up the opportunity to eat like kings. This is a restaurant that has your back!

Add to that some nice drinks and friendly service and I'm one happy Yelper.  Carlsbad is a trek for me from downtown, but I'll be making it, and I'm pretty sure you should too.

I spend a disproportionate amount of free time in Clairemont since finding this place.

We were craving some Indian food after a movie, and Bombay Coast quickly became our new discovery. The food was good, the service was unintrusive but friendly, our meals came out quickly, and the prices were some of the best in SD.

As much as I love me a good Indian buffet, sometimes it's nice to order Indian food in SD from a menu but not mortgage your house to do so (I'm talking to you, Gaslamp Indian restaurants!!)

This has become a go-to spot for girls' night out.

I have run a number of small businesses, and it was a relief to finally find an IT professional in San Diego who is an expert but doesn't need to talk over your head to prove it!!!

Jose made himself available at the earliest opportunity to help me with my network issues, took time to understand my business needs before making recommendations (not a one-size-fits-all thing), and for these reasons has been my go-to ever since.  It's great peace of mind to know he'll be available as issues come up.

While I appreciated his efficiency and patience more than I can explain in a Yelp review, the friendliness was truly an unexpected bonus.

So long, stereotypes about IT guys!

Update - 3/7/2012 3 photos 1 Check-in Here
Every time I go back to RLD I like it more, which is convenient given that it's in the center of downtown. I was going and "checking in" so often that my friends started to wonder if I was sponsored!

Lately we've used Red Light as our kickoff spot for a night out downtown, and it's perfect. My experience has been that recommendations help, but if you're waiting at the bar for your table to open, the bartenders are extremely friendly. Talk about something new for San Diego.

Last week we went for a girls' night out - we started out by ordering almost every appetizer (no joke).  Good thing I don't eat bone marrow, bc when I looked up from my plate, the girls had finished it. They were too busy enjoying to stop and ask if I wanted some! So I guess it's good.

The appetizers were all flavorful and filling, and that plus our delicious (and generously poured!) cocktails kept us busy until our entrees arrived. Oh boy.

I had the surf n turf dinner entree (my eyes were hungry, I guess!) and was surprised by how generous the portion was. The meat was tender, the plate came together deliciously. I was slumped in our booth with happy food coma by the end of the meal.

The booth made for a cozy reunion space for the girls, where we could gossip and catch up freely.  It was a great vantage point to enjoy the decor and watch the young, busy crowd rotate through the doors.  And our server was attentive, patient, and great with recommendations.   I'll be honest- I felt a little gangster sitting in a booth in the back, being treated so well.

Got an invite to the soft opening of this venue and let's just say I edged my way in for BOTH nights, that's how much I liked it.  The drinks were outstanding and I now have plans to work my way through their drink menu (it's important to have ambition in life, people), but for starters the Rhubarb prosecco and Apple Cider Soda were no-fail favorites in our crowd.  So far my favorite foods were the peppers appetizer, the brussel sprouts, the duck fries, and the bread pudding. Oh my the bread pudding.

We needed an edgy and more modern lounge/restaurant on this side of town, and I'm excited to bring this into my regular rotation.  The venue strikes me as perfect for a business meeting (lunch or dinner), or girl or guys' night out.  Basically I'll be using any excuse to go back.

Look, if you're going to strip down to your birthday suit and get a skin cancer check, ANYTHING the doctor can do to make it less awkward than it already is is appreciated!

I can't count how many times I've been to some doctor's office but forgotten my questions because they were cold or rushed. Dr. Kormeili was ready to answer my (many!) questions, was knowledgeable with her answers, and was (perhaps most importantly) warm and welcoming. That sort of bedside manner is a rare find, and is the only reason I would publicly post my medical whereabouts online!!!

Bonus points for the fact that she didn't try to upsell me services. For that reason alone I know when I'm ready for them that this is where I will go!

I want to be taken for a ride in your cars, not in your OFFICES, Mercedes!

SCENE 1:
When I bought my car a few years back (preowned 2007 230) I wanted to try a Mercedes, see how I liked the brand knowing (hoping!) I would be in a position to buy something nicer down the line.  Before I left they pointed out that they would do me a favor by painting over existing scratches (um, hello, YOU are selling me the car).  And they wouldn't include an MP3 player, which would have cost them nothing and would have been, you know, appropriate in the 21st century.

SCENE 2:
Shortly after buying the car, I founded out I needed new tires.  The tires were completely worn out.  Here's the kicker: I work FROM HOME.  So this means it's your problem, Mercedes of SD, not mine.  I have owned many cars and never dealt with this sort of nonsense. Given how often my family, friends and I have to get our M tires replaced, you'd think we were in a drag racing club.

SCENE 3:
Then I kept getting mailers about how I was due for a service. So I made a service appointment yesterday. I was finally seen 20-30 min after my scheduled appointment.  The gentleman who helped me couldn't have been more surprised that I was there, apparently I'm not due for service.  Really? Because that would have been convenient to know BEFORE I took time off.  If I'm going to play hookey from work, it's not to hang out at your dealership, folks.

He asked if there were any other issues as long as I was there, so he was going to look at my a/c which was out because of a wire issue (he found the wire hanging).  He said it would be a $141 diagnostic.  Fine.  Then he called me with an $800+ estimate, and suggestions for *further* repairs.

I suggest you repair the way you treat customers.

SO.  I told him I couldn't afford that right at the holidays, and he said it would be in the $300s anyhow just for the look, and he'd cut me a special deal on the repair so I'd walk out at under $400. Hm. Pay $350 and get nothing or pay $370 and get a problem fixed. Let me think. I was trapped and very much taken for a ride.

For some reason I thought to ask if they would be securing the loose wire if they weren't going to fix it.   It seemed obvious to do something like that. He said he would do it as a FAVOR to me.  Aw, thanks.  So glad I, the car repair professional, thought to suggest it.  They were going to leave a wire hanging!

Duct tape, $400, available to you at Mercedes Benz.

Seriously, I love the look of the cars but it's not worth the aggravation.  They think they I'm just some random chick who is a disposable customer, but you bet I'm repeating this story.  Of course after this I found out my mom won't set foot in the dealership, she's had the same pricey and irritating experiences.

Hopefully I just took the fall for the rest of you Yelpers out there.  It's a tough economy, go somewhere that cares about your business.

When they offer you "beef heart nachos" they probably aren't kidding (note: I didn't ask)

We had already had dinner and just wanted a drink, so we checked this out for the first time.  It's very low key, very suited to the neighborhood.  We sat at a table and my sole complaint is that a female server had a hard time hiding her frustration that we were only drinking (and not fast enough for her, I guess)

There was a male server (not sure if he was a bartender or manager) who was very accommodating, helpful with the wine, etc.   The night we went they had Dj Joemama subbing in and he was awesome too.

Would definitely go back, but I wish they would close the windows when it's 40 degrees out!  Will be back but with extra layers and/or my own space heater next time.

I expected greasy bar food and they delivered so much more.  Um, hello, they have mac n cheese *specials*. Do you really need to hear more?  We had the butter leaf lettuce salad (doesn't sound substantial, but it is) and the mac n cheese special (feta, artichoke...) and had to roll ourselves out the door.

We wandered in on a Saturday, and were seated immediately with minimal attitude (rare in SD venues, in case you hadn't noticed).  At our table we had Megan, who was patient when it took forever for us to go through the menu, checked back on us frequently, got our to-go order for friends ready to go quickly, and in general just gave us some of the best service I've had in San Diego.

There's a lot of space in here so it seems like a great venue for a bigger group or event. Will be back again soon.

Loved it.  A nice spa with great amenities and NONE of that attitude to be found at other spas (Morgan Run, I'm talking to you)

I went with a friend and we booked facials and massages.  We enjoyed their lounge; I flipped through a National Geographic (a nice change from US Weekly, wouldn't you say?) until I got my massage, which was solid.  [Sometimes a masseuse will be 5'2 but have the power of a 300 pound man, despite your requests otherwise. It was delightful to leave a massage NOT battered and bruised!]

The facial was fantastic. My skin felt great and this is the FIRST time I have bought product from a service and it was as good as expected (the lip stuff. Seriously. Get it).  I might have relaxed so much I fell asleep (obviously I relaxed so much that I didn't even get her name). Sorry facial lady, thanks for making me look good!

The girls at the spa were all friendly, the steam room is the best I've been to, and if I'd had more time the gym facilities looked great too.  Next time I will try to stay longer and indulge even more, make a day of it, have some drinks on the balcony over the beautiful harbor view, etc. You should too!
