Everest on Grand
Categories: Himalayan/Nepalese, Indian
My first experience with Nepalese food. And a pretty decent one at that. It was a cold winter day and a couple of friends who had been here before wanted to go to Everest, and since they had spicy food, I thought "Why not?!". There are few things that warm somebody up as some nice spicy food on a cold day and Everest did not disappoint!
We started off with the yak momos (we ordered beef, but they brought the yak). It was the first time I have ever had yak and it was pretty good! Tasted like a more textured version of beef.
For my main entree, I had a yak thukpa, which was a rice noodle in soup dish. I would call it a Nepalese version of pho. Not quite as delicious, but still very good. I ordered it "hot" for the spiciness level and it did not disappoint! It warmed me up pretty darn quick and started my nose running in no time! The serving size was extremely generous and the left over soup was fantastic with some rice for lunch the next day.
Service was friendly and decent.
I would not mind coming back again and trying out some of their other dishes!

I'd give this place 4 stars for their pizza delivered/take out and 3 stars for the dine-in experience.
I've gotten pizza delivered from here on multiple occasions and eaten in once.
I've only ever gotten their thin crust pizza and have gotten it for take out on multiple occasions because I like it so much. I am not sure what sort of cheese they use, but it is greasy as hell and totally awesome. Their garlic thin crust pizza is simply fantastic (If you are into large pieces of garlic). Probably my favorite delivered or take out pizza. It's rather unfortunate that I haven't found anything like that closer to where I live.
I've also eaten there once and I wasn't a huge fan of that experience. It wasn't that there was anything bad that happened, but it was just rather plain and ordinary. The food (some pasta dish) wasn't anything extraordinary (very similar to what you would find at say Maggianos). Service was also average, nothing special. Everything was just so very average. There are plenty of places I'd rather go to first (or even try) before I go back and dine-in. I will continue to get their pizza either delivered or take out, but will be skipping the dine-in.

T's Bar & Restaurant

T's is a bar and restaurant. The restaurant is up front while the bar is in the back. Both areas are decent sized. If you prefer a quieter meal, then the restaurant area is where you should be. If you want the bar experience, well go to the bar! The overall atmosphere is pretty much what you would expect from a local neighborhood bar.
When they have their specials going on, their prices are hard to beat. $5 for double pints! They also usually have some sort of daily special going on. Their menu also changes periodically, sometimes for the better, sometimes not (they got rid of the artichoke bake for a spinach bake instead, not a good move IMHO). Even if you can't catch a special, their prices are pretty reasonable.
The wait staff has always been extremely friendly and attentive.
The bar area has a pool table and a Wii.
They have an outdoor patio area in the summer.
A great neighborhood bar to go and have a drink.

My friend had heard about this place and their thin crust oven fired pizza (he had just been to the Punch Neapolitan Pizza in Saint Paul) and wanted to give this place a try.
The pizzas here are baked on an extremely thin crust in a wood fire oven. The crust is actually crispy when they are done baking it. They also do not skimp on the toppings! They put plenty of ingredients on the pizza so every bite has something in it (other than cheese, unless you just got a cheese pizza). The prices are also very good. They got a great lunch special (a 10" personal classic italian pizza with a can of pop for $5). We got two mediums (14") and a dessert and that was more than sufficient to feed 3 starving adults.
This place is definitely more geared for delivery as their dine-in area is extremely tiny (something like 3 tables that might seat a total of 10 people?). But it is BYOB.
If you are looking for some delicious thin crust pizza packed with toppings that won't lighten your wallet, this is the place to go!

Falafel King
Categories: Vegetarian, Middle Eastern
This place should probably be more named like Falafel Baron, the food is nowhere near the quality that you would expect from/for a King.
The falafel itself wasn't too bad, but it was what it was served with that brought it down (and the price as well, it's a little on the expensive side as far as falafel goes). The pita was pretty bad. It was store bought and very rubbery. And the fixings that came with it were rather plain.
The best part of the meal was probably the side order of fries that you can get for a dollar more and the fries weren't even that good.
The guy who took my order was friendly enough. I imagine the service for dine-in to be decent, but I got take-out so I can't confirm this.
The best part about this place is probably the location and the fact that it is open late (no doubt to cater to the bar crowd on their way home). But the food also tastes like it is for the after-bar-crowd. The food just isn't something that I would seek while sober.

This place is probably best described as a "dive bar". The place is small. The furnishings look like they were acquired and have been used since the 1970's (from somebody's cabin no less. The light fixtures are all made of antlers. There's a bust of a buffalo hanging up. And there's a portion of the ceiling that is covered with posters that are normally found in college dorm rooms). It's pretty dirty and grimy.
But it all adds to the character of this place. It's got a full bar and a diner/grill kitchen. It's got happy hour for most of the evening on Fridays and Saturdays. The drinks are ridiculously cheap! The food is pretty good for a bar (try the Red Pepper Cheese Curds, not the best cheese curds, in fact they tend to be overdone, but they are spicy and salty! A perfect complement to your beer). They have a dart board in the back! They have karaoke!

I heard about this place on that special had where Brian Williams spent the day with Obama and Obama decided to go out and buy his staff his lunch from Five Guys. I figure if it's good enough for the President, it should be good enough for me and it was!
This is basically my replacement for In-N-Out. The burgers are assembled in the same assembly line fashion and they both use fresh ingredients. However, it would seem Five Guys has slightly more in the condiments department. Five Guys has a plethora of toppings that you can put on your burger (including fried onions and grilled mushrooms). Being my first time there, I opted for everything. Which basically makes a generous sized burger to begin with absolutely ginourmous. Plus I made the mistake of ordering fries as well. Let's just say I was not able to finish everything. However, what I was able to finish, was absolutely delicious. The burger had the "made-it-myself" taste. Everything tasted fresh. And the fries were pretty good. Like In-N-Out, they make them from scratch. Unlike In-N-Out, they are actually good.
I believe this is the first store in MN. So it was pretty packed. It's a pretty small space so seating is pretty limited. Hopefully they do well enough to open up a couple more locations in the state.
The only thing that was missing from this meal was a shake! But regardless, I will definitely be back.

We stopped here between the National Air and Space Museum and the National Archives, due to the fact that it was raining cats and dogs outside. It was a welcome pit stop.
To warm me back up, I ordered a bowl of Chili and a Hot Chocolate. It wasn't anything super special, but maybe because of the weather, those items really hit the spot.
The items were a little on the pricey side, but that isn't all that surprising given its location on the Mall.
It's a great place to hang out at though. It had the feel of a local coffee shop except instead of being small and cramped, it was large and spacious. We spent a decent amount of time there just relaxing (and more importantly, out of the rain).
While I would never eat here on a regular basis, it's definitely a great place to rest a little while touring the attractions on the mall.

I had Dim Sum here on a Saturday late morning with a rather large party. This place seemed well suited for large parties as the dining area is fairly large (compared to other Dim Sum places I have been).
The quality of the food was... shall we say, sufficient. Being from the Twin Cities, my standard for Dim Sum isn't all that high, and after eating at this place, I almost prefer the Dim Sum back home. Most of the food we got was on the cool/flat out cold side. And the food quality was pretty standard. Most of the standard fare was just that, standard.
Service was decent. They were prompt on the refills for water and the teapots. And even though we had a large party (of 18) we did not have to wait. We must have beat the morning rush (we showed up around 11AM).
I'd say the only positive for this place was the price. For our party the total bill came out to about $200 (and we were all stuffed).
I haven't been to any other Dim Sum places in the area, but it seems to be a popular place to be on the weekends. It was definitely filling up as we were leaving. Personally, I would try other places before coming back here.

Their specialty is a burger that they add an extremely large portion of pastrami on. Their shakes (in particular, the caramel shake) are also great. Throw in some sweet potato fries with their special fry sauce (similar to thousand island or big mac sauce) and what you have is an extremely large and delicious meal all for around $10. We went after a full day of snowboarding and even I could not finish everything.
I don't usually eat pastrami so I can not tell if the pastrami was good quality but I did enjoy it (even though there was so much of it). The burger itself and the sweet potato fries aren't anything spectacular by themselves, but just everything put together makes it pretty good. The shakes were good on their own.
They also serve gyros here if burgers aren't your thing.
