Downbeat Cafe

My friends call this place "hipster coffee" which seems appropriate from the two times I've been there.

I paid $4.something for a bagel with cream cheese and a small coffee. The coffee was pretty good, a bold (probably French) roast that tasted pretty fresh. They offer half & half in a mini fridge below the self-serve coffee dispenser, but no milk or soy are in there. Not sure if that's in a special fridge or if you're expected to just deal.

The bagel was weak, seemed like something you get in a drug store or grocery store, one step up from Sara Lee but not something I'd want to order again. I'm sure I'll be back, but just for coffee and people watching.

Two Boots

The pizza itself gets 4 stars from me, but factoring in value and delivery time this place is just aight. We ordered the Grandma Bess which arrived in about 40 minutes. It was warm, but definitely not hot; either every other pizza got delivered first or ours didn't get out in a timely manner.

I thought the crust was so-so, maybe a bit burnt or something but it was pretty tough, although the taste was decent. The sauce, cheese and toppings were awesome, great quality and in the right proportions. I'd be willing to try Two Boots again either at the restaurant or picking it up myself. Maybe the Grandma Bess, experienced correctly, is worth the $23 + tax.

Go Go Gyro

2.5 rounded up; I've had better gyros and Greek salad but it hit the spot and the combination deal for the two ($8 I think) is not a bad deal.

The gyro sandwich had the right amounts of meat, veggies and sauce. The ingredients were fine but not outstanding. The salad was similar, I recall wishing they had better dressing.

I got my order to go, service was friendly enough and the order was up pretty quick.

Super Tortas

I just started working right next to BUR, and decided to drive around the area and look for something for lunch yesterday. I saw the purple building and a sign for tortas so I drove around back (there's an alley on the left side of the building that leads to the parking lot in back).

I ordered the combination with the shredded chicken torta, rice and beans. I also got a medium horchata. I was going to just get the sandwich but realized I was out of cash and there's a $10 minimum for credit cards. I'm glad I got everything because it was all very good!

The meat was moist and nicely spiced. The toasted bread had a great texture to it, not super light or crumbly but also not too thick. They put lettuce, tomato, avocado and mayo on there, and they included a cup of hot sauce which was the bomb! Rice and beans were average, a nice complement to the meal. Horchata wasn't tasty - not too sweet, possibly from a mix but if it was it's a damn good mix.

The lady behind the counter was sweet. She didn't speak much English, though I think at first it was because she thought I was Hispanic. It doesn't matter, there are picture menus you can point to and she understood everything I said.

I Love Tofu & BBQ

Staying in Glendale a few nights during my transition to LA, I was looking for someplace to eat a decent meal and have a drink with it. Much had closed by 9, but I came in around 9:15. Service was very friendly, the place was very clean and there was a giant tv playing You Deserve It.

I sat down, ordered a beer and then a kimchi tofu stew with pork. They gave me lots of side dishes and even offered to refill them during the meal. The stew was delicious, at the requested level of spiciness. Total for the stew and a large Hite was about $16 after tax, which seems about right.

A nice bonus is the little tea/coffee machine on the way out, I had this hot desserty tea concoction that was great.

Prime Dip Sandwiches

This shop has changed so many times. First it was PickMe sandwiches, then PickMe plus some crappy excuse for Korean food, then a What's Up Dog, and now it's Prime Dip. I finally tried Prime Dip last week, and it was so much better than I expected it to be.

For $8 you get a bigass sandwich with lots of delicious meat and the right amount of horseradish sauce. You get the au jus for dipping. The bread is tasty and has a nice texture. It's strong enough so that it doesn't fall apart but it's not too tough or chewy.

It came with a choice of side too, I went with the creamed spinach which was pretty good.

And in case you're wondering, this was on a to-go order. It wasn't all soggy or cold when I got back to the office, everything was still excellent.

I wasn't really impressed by the best burrito in Mountain View, maybe I ordered the wrong thing or went at the wrong time. Or maybe MV burritos aren't all that.

I got the Mountain View special (what most taquerias call a super burrito) with carnitas. The ingredients were fine, and it's cool that you get a choice of rice. But the burrito was just ok.. The cheese wasn't melted, and nothing about it really stood out. No chips were included, which was kind of a bummer.

On the plus side, the taqueria is part of a store, so you can pick up a beer (or several) as well as a bottle of Tapatio or whatever else you need. Service was pretty friendly too.

I'll probably try Costena again, but it didn't make a strong first impression.

Ye Rustic Inn

Almost every time I visit my friend Greg or he visits me, we go out for wings and beer at least once. Greg has tried a lot of spots in L.A. and has decided that Ye Rustic Inn is among the best for wings.

I've been here and to Big Wang's. The wings at Rustic are better, and the douchebag presence is much lower. And even if they are there, you can't tell because Rustic is super dark inside. Seriously, you close yourself off from the outside world except for the numerous TVs playing various sports.

The wings are so good. I've not yet tried the suicidal sauce because the hot sauce is delicious and hot enough for me. Beers are reasonably priced, and they have a pretty extensive happy hour both in terms of hours and offerings.

Eh, the meal was solid but not worth the $19.50 (after tax) I paid for a cheeseburger, sweet potato fries and a strawberry shake. I came here on a Sunday around 8, it wasn't crowded, I ordered my food and 10 minutes or so later it was ready. Service, though minimal since it's counter service,  was fine.

The $8 burger was satisfying, even though the only cheese option is American cheese (at least, as far as I could tell by looking at the menu). The meat is flavorful enough and they put good toppings on.  Good bun too. Still, not as satisfying as In-n-Out and definitely not on a level with Pearl's or the uber-expensive Burger Bar. But, it's a cut above fast food or shitty diners.

The $4 sweet potato fries were solid, some of the better ones I've had. Perfect crispiness, generous serving, not too heavily seasoned. Nice.

The $6 shake was ok, nothing special. It should cost half of what it does. Again, Pearl's has Gott's beat hands down, and even Lori's Diner has better milkshakes.

I get it, the location is awesome and you will always pay a premium for that. The food was good, just not worth it, and I experienced it when it wasn't crowded. I'd be pissed if on top of this it took me 25 minutes to get my food.

Hell yeah, they have delicious sliders and a good selection of beers, including local microbrews. They take credit cards and have outdoor seating. So much to like!

I tried one of every slider and especially enjoyed the fried chicken and catfish sliders. Definitely had to order an extra round. I didn't get a chance to try the famous donuts but I heard they were pretty amazing.

I wish they had a full bar, but they do have a good beer selection and are happy to discuss the options with you. Service was good, prices are average. I'll be back.
