Sun Ming Chinese Restaurant

Best Chinese I've had in Columbia so far.

Ordered the ma po tofu, which isn't on the lunch menu, but I read that they specialized in Sichuan cuisine. Asked for ma la "hot and numbing", a signature style in that region of China which makes use of the fragrant (and numbing) sichuan peppercorn. The dish had slight heat by no sichuan peppercorn. Other than that, good. Clean place, nice servers. Recommended.

I stopped in here because i live nearby, and now this is my go-to bike shop in town. So far the work has been very good, prices are fair, and the owner is friendly and trustworthy. Highly recommended for bike maintenance.

The store is relatively small, so the retail selection lacks depth.

Gimza Polish Restaurant - CLOSED

First visit to Gimza last night, I really enjoyed it. The menu had a wide variety of options, but many were variations of the same type of item (e.g. 5-6 kinds of pierogi). There are salads, sausages (kielbasa), schnitzel, and crepes as well as a few other items.

I had the kielbasa with bread and sauerkraut, as well as an order of potato pierogi. I also tried the mini mushroom and mini beef dumplings (like tiny pierogi). The sausage was very good, but the bread and cumin-laced sauekraut made the dish. The pierogi are fried, but not overly greasy. One order is very filling. I recommend sharing and trying some other items.

Friendly service, comfortable space, recommended.

Dj House Korean Restaraunt

Very decent Korean food. Had the kimchee jigae and galbi combo - $13. Lots of banchan, with was of above average quality. The greens, pickles, and sprouts were particularly good.

The marinated short ribs and jigae (soup) arrived shortly thereafter. I like silken tofu in jigae, but this had run of the mill soft tofu. The broth was good and spicy. The galbi were slightly tough, but not too bad. The cuts were much thicker than I'm used to eating.

Washed it all down with a crisp Hite beer. Friendly staff. Recommended.

Been here twice while on work. People here are super friendly. Mac n cheese is killer. Collards and green beans are decent. Fried chicken is average, but totally fine.

$7.00 for a thigh/drum, two sides, great cornbread muffin, and rot-your-teeth-sweet tea.

My new go-to place for outdoor's gear. Half the store is new stuff, half is gently used. I went there recently to get a bike rack, and the owner Mitch was a big help. He helped me choose which one would be best for my car, set it all up for me, and I walked out paying at least 25% less for a rack that had been used just a few times.

Definitely worth a stop in.

Grindhouse Killer Burgers

Update - 4/1/2010
This was my 4th visit to Grindhouse, and it was my weakest burger. I went with the double Apache, just like my last visit. The burger was extremely soggy, resulting in a very wet bun. Also, the meat was strangely underseasoned and the griddle crust wasn't as great as last time.

Still not a bad burger, but every burger at Grindhouse that I've had has been slightly different than the last. If they can lock in the consistency on the quality of my last burger, I'll be there all the damn time. Fries were good. Onion rings were also improved from the early days of the onion straws, but the batter still isn't my favorite.

    Quick thoughts:

The burger is slightly greasy, served on a wonderfully soft bun, with all the requisite toppings, plus free Grindhouse sauce if you so desire. A single will do you right, so I imagine a double burger will give even the hungriest of eaters their fill. The meat itself is a bit soft, almost wet. My first thought is that I would like more seasoning in the beef mix, but upon further intense burger reflection I think I would like a little more of a flavorful and seasoned fat crust on the exterior of the meat to add some flavor and provide contrast against the soft beef.

I did enjoy the sides a bit more than my dining cohort, but I'm a sucker for hot crinkle-cut fries and the onions rings (more like straws) weren't greasy and had a lots of salty and peppery flavor in the exterior, though I will agree that this style of onion ring is more of a crunchy batter conduit than an onion.

Grindhouse makes a very satisfying burger, at a fair price, in a location I very much liked. As the guy sitting next to me who stumbled upon Grindhouse for lunch said, "I might just have to do that again."

Best cheese steak I've had in recent memory. Amaroso rolls flown in from Philly, PA beer, even Herr's chips are flown in from Philadelphia. Served with provolone, or cheez whizz if you like that style.

Steak is also imported, though not from Philly. Delicious to the last bite, I enjoyed a full sandwich with an Iron City beer.

No one else was in there the whole time I was there on a Wed night, which is too bad.

Best pho I've had in Columbia. Decent broth (waaaay better than the Golden Chopsticks broth), the meat was OK but ribeye was sliced way to thick. Brisket also was lacking - needs to be more tender and fatty.

3.5 stars.

One of my new favorites in Columbia. Cool chef and wine list has some killer values ('03 Arcadian Sleepy Hollow Pinot for $50? Retails at $40, if you can even find it).

I sat at the bar and had the crispy duck confit. Good, not perfect, maybe a bit dry, and I'm not a huge fan of the sweet potato pairing, but it was definitely delicious. Also, it's a half duck - a very large portion. Just that entree, no app, was enough to fill me up.

Everyone was super nice to me - bartender, chef, wait staff, even the valet. When I'm traveling alone on business, that is something that really plays into my experience. Hell, I have no else to talk to at the bar by myself. :)

Can't wait to go back and try the house made charcuterie....maybe tonight...
