I sampled #13 Rad-na wide noodles with chicken, #20 Pad Esann spicy noodles with chicken and a chicken egg roll. The Rad-na chicken was covered in a slimy sauce and only had one vegetable in it (brocolli). Overall, it had a slightly sweet flavour that tasted a bit like plum sauce (but was essentially flavourless). I dumped some of the sweet chili dipping sauce on it and was able to give it some extra flavour. The problem was, the dish already had so much sauce on it that it turned into a giant gloopy mess. Not good. The Pad Esann noodles were slightly spicy, but there was hardly any meat and no veggies in them. The worst part of the meal was the chicken egg roll, which had the texture of wet cat food. I'm not kidding - it was that bad.
Bottom line: if you're looking for a healthy noodle dish that's not too overpowering or spicy, you can find it here. Definitely beats Americanized Chinese food, but in terms of spice and flavor levels, it's unlike any Thai food I've ever had (in a bad way).
I really, really wanted to love this place! Maybe I chose the least-delicious dishes? I'd go back to sample the chicken with the peanut dipping sauce, but when it comes to noodles, I'm going to stick with the pad thai at JWok.

The photos of the crispy rolls do not do the size of them justice. I was worried that they wouldn't be enough to fill me up, but when my order arrived, my jaw dropped. The crispy roll was the size of a large burrito, and was bursting with meat, rice, and peppers. Overall, it was very good, if a bit heavy on the rice. Next time I'll try one of the curry rolls, which seem to be meatier.
The pad thai was unlike anything I've ever tried. I hope all So-Cal pad thai is like this (ie: not red, gloppy, and tangy like every version I've had back home). I've literally been thinking about it for days.
The only drawback to my experience at JWok was my unfortunate timing of when I ate my dinner. A few hours later, while I was still thinking about the meal, I saw a photo of Hanson, which made me get that annoying "mmm bop" song in my head. A few minutes later, I substituted "mmm bop" for "JWok". However, I'm confident that if you avoid Hanson-related stimuli, this will not happen to you ;)
Bottom line: I will be back to sample more of the menu (and the $5 lunch specials) but it will be a challenge not to order that delicious pad thai every time I go!

Screaming kids. Kids throwing food. Kids screaming while covered in food. Inattentive parents seemingly oblivious to the spectacle of the aforementioned screaming and food throwing. By the end of my hour spent gorging myself, I was ready to lay the smack down, but the carb coma that resulted from one too many slices of pizza made me docile. I feel like this all-important equation is built into the business model of Souplantation.
Highlights: the pizza, selection of drinks, and the corn bread.
Low points: the loud and messy kids, the pushy people in line, and the fact that some of the best items got scooped up quickly.
Bottom line: avoid going during breeder prime-time (Fri-Sun evenings, around 5-7pm).
Other bonuses: a good selection of drinks (including shakes), a comfortable dining area (with plush diner chairs), and great people-watching.

My guess why is because the waiter never asked us how spicy we wanted our curries (which I heard another waiter do at the table beside ours), and we got it too mild. In any case, the resulting dishes were on the "meh" scale of good. Lesson learned: if you like your Thai spicy, make sure you specify.
Siem Reap is Thai/Cambodian. The menu features all of the dishes you'd expect from a Thai resto (curries, pad thai, soups), but also some Cambodian dishes like kakao khmer (a chicken curry with papaya) and Cambodian curries (which are similar to Thai, but with more lemongrass). There are also several dishes that have more of a Chinese flavour like stir fry with oyster sauce and the citrus chicken, which is similar to lemon chicken.
Three out of four people in my party had some version of the red curry (chicken, shrimp, and tofu) and everyone liked it. If you're going for a green curry, I suggest the Thai Curry (there are two versions of green), because it comes with a bunch of vegetables, whereas most of the other curry dishes don't.
The only real downside of this restaurant is the atmosphere. It feels very slap-dash and like a fast food restaurant.
In conclusion, if you're in Kingston and find yourself craving something other than big-box-style restaurant food, check out Siem Reap!

Summertime means festival season at H-Front, and the quality of entertainment you can enjoy for free is outstanding. My favourite festival is the BBC (Beats, Breaks and Culture), specifically the Popping and Locking dance competition. SOLID 2+ hours of insane dancing, great music, and a fun crowd.
It's also the perfect place to camp out with an iced coffee from Tim Hortons (from the nearby Queen's Quay mall - with chocolate milk instead of cream) and take in the pretty scenery. Weekday evenings are the most rugrat-free :)
