Order the Salt and Pepper Pork Chop! Smothered in scallions, minced garlic and slivers of spicy red chili, they don't skimp on the generous portion. Spring for the extra sixty cents that gets you a nice little container of egg fried rice. It's simple and perfect. Worth four stars alone. After a boozy night (or with 'one last beer'), it doesn't get much better than this.

If you're in the mood for old school, the Pu Pu assorted appetizers are the bomb. Their cream cheese filled won ton was one of the best I've had. There was lots of flavorful filling with more than just cream cheese going on. Only thing missing was the flaming fruit.

Be warned though... the Popcorn Chicken with Dijon is essentially the fried chicken you'd expect for orange chik, smothered in a creamy sweet sauce that tastes just like what they use on honey walnut chicken. I'm sure it's good for someone, but me, not so much. Goppity gloop on my fried lovelies? That's where that last star went. No tanks you.

Food news aside, I can wholeheartedly vouch for their delivery, too. These guys made it to our place after midnight on Halloween in just over half an hour and the delivery guy was friendly per usual. Can't ask for much more than that.

Definitely better the day after. I finally made it to the middle of my egg foo young this afternoon and there it was... a gold mine of bbq pork! Delicious, pink, piggy!

When a menu shows up on my doorstep declaring "We Delivery," I dial!

Considering they're another delivery joint doing a little bit of everything, from dim sum to sushi and Thai tea, I had a feeling this one might be iffy but the lure of egg foo young got the best of me. I ordered the pork (along with a Thai tea, some hot and sour soup, an order of spicy tuna and shrimp chow mein). My foo young wasn't even close to as pictured with chunks of white pork as opposed to the bright pink Chinese bbq pork I was expecting, but it was tasty enough to hit the spot and the onion filled gravy was nothing to complain about.

The sushi was surprisingly fresh and flavorful as were the soup and tea, though it's pretty tough to mess up the latter. The whole shebang delivered to my door was just $35 bucks.

Good enough to be a favorite? Not quite. Good enough to try at least once more before passing a final verdict? Definitely,

Pita Way - CLOSED

With hot, fresh steaming (kosher) pitas being turned out of their authentic ovens on the spot all day, they don't call themselves the Pita Way for nothin' here.

They do plates, wraps and combos with everything from steaming hot fresh falafel to their cilantro chicken and shwarma and it's all good. You can have your sammies wrapped or on a roll, sub style. Everything is house made, from the pickles to the babaghanouj that I licked clean off the plate. Delish!

This is a great spot on Pico's Kosher Row for lunch or a late night bite, just remember, evening hours are based on sunset as opposed to a clock. When the sun goes down on Fridays, they're out early for shabbat, but come Saturday night, they're ready to rock and roll and stay open late.

They've got fountain fizzy Kosher Coke, too! Mmmm.

Pumpkin Pie Shake, Jack's Spicy Chicken with cheese and a 24/7 ghetto lock down drive-through window in the middle of the Matzo Mile... that's what I call a couple thousand calorie party! Give or take 70g fat.

Who needs booze? Let the emotional eating commence!

Ladies, get your pipes ready... mama's got a new crack den for ya!

The BCBG boutique that resided on this corner of Melrose and Laurel until late last year has been replaced with a high-end outlet featuring of out of season and overstock BCBG wares alongside some other great labels they periodically bring in.

Standing proud in bold black and white stripes, you can't miss it. They've got it all, from cocktail and party dresses to summery numbers, knits, trousers, and one of the best selections of skirts I've seen in a while, all lined up on racks clearly sectioned off by price. Everything is substantially discounted -- from as much as $1000k down to $100 -- and for the savvy shopper willing to do a little stalking, even deeper discounts come along. Many of the racks are labeled $89 and $49 and you can usually snag separates for even less. With shoes and accessories, it's a veritable one-stop-shop. Some stops yield better deals than others, but trust me, it's worth multiple return visits.

If you're a BCBG/Max Azria lover, or, just in need of a holiday frock or some snazzy new work clothes on a budget, (who doesn't?), this is a seriously hot spot for your shopping rotation. Just do your stalking wisely. All sales are final.

Mmmm... taco Tuesday. Sometimes a girl just needs to get her taco on and El Chile hit the spot. They weren't brilliant and I've had plenty bigger and better meat (that's what she said!), but for a buck, I'm not bitchin'. The birria was the best of the bunch and the ceviche tostada was fresh and flavorful with the Tapatio and lime they gave me on the side. Es beuno.

Only real complaint was dealing with the douchey wanksters at Whole Foods who can't park to save their lives, but that won't stop me from coming back and trying the chilaquiles and fish tacos. Even if I do have to climb into my car through a window. Again. Pinche hipsters.

Dia de Los Muertos at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Category: Local Flavor
Neighborhood: Hollywood

It's safe to say I can now think of at least two things I highly recommend doing at a cemetery... and Dia de los Muertos is most definitely one of them. (I'll leave the other to your furtive imaginations!).

The colorful displays, live ancestral music, feather head-dressed Aztec dancers, elaborate and lovingly displayed candlelit altars, painted faces, tacos, pupusas, tequila, folk art, mausoleums, damp hanging on the air... all mingling to create a feast for the senses. This celebration of the dead is so alive the energy is palpable. Every year brings serious talent and Lila Downs' live performance was incredible. More incredible was the fact that there was just as much going on on two other stages.

There are a number of Dia de los Muertos events across LA, but as far as big fetes go, this one is not to be missed. Don't think twice, just grab some friends and go. Make sure you're armed with cash so you aren't stuck paying fees or standing in lines at the on-site ATMs -- the $10 admission, food and most vendors are cash only. Arrive early to beat the crowds, get parking before the lots fill up and most importantly, to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy all there is to see, hear and do.

Tip: If you don't mind missing the spectacle and live music at the main entrance (they even entertain you in line!), you can skip the masses and sneak into the side entrance on Gower where they sell tix, too.

Overland Café cares about you and your sobriety. No, really, they do. It even says so on the little yellow slip they've started leaving on the table when you're seated that notes the time along with the fact that you've got a two-hour max window to sit there and get wasted on cheap champ. I'm convinced the ridiculous parking lot and tight alley out back are the sobriety test to see if you have any business getting out of there behind the wheel. If you can't maneuver to get out... you probably oughta wait it out.

They still don't care if they serve you burnt black potatoes and hash or one hard and one poached egg, though. Luckily for them, their patrons are so wasted nobody seems to care.

Drink up! Just don't forget the DD. For those of you already buzzed, that's designated driver, not a reference to your cup size. ;)

    The Good
    --------------

    - $4.99 for free flowing champagne during weekend brunch! And I mean, freeeee flowing.

    - Long wait for a table? No problem. They ply you with the booze as soon as you walk through the door. Literally. All you have to do is ask and they'll set you up with a couple of bottomless glasses of bubbly and a paper cup full of OJ to mix and guzzle to your heart's content.

    - Much cuter décor, both inside and out, than I would have expected. Even some fun art on the walls. There's also an enclosed patio area that looked great for large groups. I don't think they do rezzys but if you call ahead with a big group, they'll get you sorted.

    - Fun crowd. Truly. Someone complained about UCLA kids, but really, who cares? There was actually a wide range of folks and ages there (who doesn't love cheap boozy brunch?) and they were all having a great time. Random strangers were cheering us. In fact, the only other place I've ever seen so many happy giddy faces crammed into one room is at a wedding.

    - As soon as your butt hits the chair, a bottle of the cheap stuff hits your table. No kidding. They just slap a whole bottle down and let you go to town. Polish that one off? No problem. Another one magically appears. Finish that one? You get the picture.

    - These people know how to poach an egg! No one poaches an egg right and they've got it down. That and their long list of variations on the Benedict and Florentine make for a tasty combo and the perfect thing to line your belly for all that fiz.

    - I was so buzzed on nearly a whole bottle of the cheap fizzy I was totally unfazed by what happened next...

    The Bad
    ------------

    - Long wait for table. As you can imagine, no ones in a hurry to get out, but no worries. See above.

    - When you're trying to turn that many drunken tables, things get messy. This clearly isn't the cleanest of joints but you could tell the ladies were doin'  their best.

    - My man thought his steak was a little... chewy. After sawing through a couple of bites, he flipped it over to discover, ooops, they forgot to cook one side. Seriously folks. One side of the steak was straight up raw. Needless to say they took it back to (over)cook it but that was too little, too late. The whole thing ended up pulled from the bill and he probably couldn't be coerced into going back. Can't blame him.

    The Bottom Line
    -------------------- ---

    - Go for the cheap champs. Get your flow on while you're waiting for a table. Order some poached eggs. Skip anything more complicated than that. This is not the place for a steak. Have a great time. Take a designated driver. Plan time for a nap. You'll need both.

Adding to the list of things I love at the Farmers Market... eggs and salami, perfectly piled pastrami sandwiches and piping hot Philly cheese steaks at Phil's.

They've been here as long as I can remember and the counter is still one of my fave places to sidle up for a casual bite anytime I walk over to run some errands or take a breather. There's a great selection of bottled sodas and they're inexpensive, reliable, friendly and easy. You can grab your food to go or pop a squat with the regulars, but no matter where you eat it, you can be sure it's always good.

Little Bar

What's in a name? In this case, everything since Little Bar is, indeed, a little bar. Bantam but mighty with eighteen beers on tap, a wine list and sake cocktails for the girly man in us all, they've got everything you could possibly need in a downright neighborly watering hole. They boast friendly barkeeps manning a great looking bar (with purse hooks! purse hooks!) and plenty of nooks and crannies for seating options galore. There's a flat screen for critical sports you can't miss and my favorite part, the dart board in the back. It's the kinda place with a little somethin' for everyone.

In case you can't hold it, be warned, the ladies room is equally abridged with nary enough room to turn around and a guarantee you'll tap some ass getting in and out, (deliberate or circumstantial, you be the judge), but if you ask me, that just adds to the charm.

The best part... they attract primarily locals which means the douche quotient is low. And if you find you get hungee, Umami Burger and Sake House Miro are right down the street.

Jongewaard's Bake N Broil

A picture may speak a thousand words, but when it comes to Jongewaard's, I think the photos went mute. The name alone got my mind a wanderin' and wander I did... right to Yelp. Just judging from the pics, I was expecting an older diner in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood of good ol' Long Beach. Maybe a divey sort. Big whoop, right? What I found was a quaint, cozy neighborhood place. Proudly proclaiming since 1965, awash in pale mossy greens, it's a homey outpost locals must find themselves at on a regular basis.

For a brekkie spot, I totally dig. If I lived in the 'hood, I could see myself visiting often like I do my own local haunts. The omelette was not too shabby doused in Tapatio, though I might've liked it better as a scramble, the lemon blueberry pancakes, however, were absolutely perfect, with just enough tart and sweet. Even better noshing and nibbling the leftovers brought home. I can't speak for dinner but I did spy all of the luscious cakes and pies and snagged a red velvet cupcake for later. It may not have been my most favorite red velvet, but let's just say I wouldn't kick it outta bed for eatin' crackers.

Bottom line, if you're in the area, this place is tops with more than a few reasons for having stuck around all these years. Three and a half stars rounded up to four.
