Dino's Lounge

My younger sister Sarah and her boyfriend Tom graduated yesterday so of course we were going to go out. They're theater majors and Tom is like... a classically trained singer. He's obsessed with karaoke and begged to go to Dino's last night (5/12/12)

Walking in, I couldn't breathe and my eyes were burning. It smells like cigarettes, parmesan cheese and dog mess in here. I was breathing through my ponytail which was covering my nose and mouth so I didn't choke. It was FOUL.

Tom wanted to play pool. Somebody had stolen the cue ball and there were no replacements available so he ended up playing a janky game on a pool table that had a huge vomit-looking stain on it.

I couldn't get over the smell. It was choking me. There was black and white porn from what looked like the 1950's-60's playing by the bar. That's just trashy and unnecessary; very off-putting.

Tons of tatted up girls with gauges and too-tight clothes were gyrating on each other to off-tune karaoke, with cigarettes hanging off their fingers. My sister and I just hoped that Tom's song would come up soon so we could leave.

His song came on, he freaking blew the roof off of the place, girls swooned and we left. My hair smelled like it was a Medusa wig made of stale, used, wet cigarettes. It was the worst smell ever. When I went to the Venetian to pick up my car, I tried to clean up in the bathroom. I washed the ends of my hair and my arms, trying to get rid of any of that awful smell. Sarah and I immediately drove home with the windows down, and threw our clothes in the shower so they wouldn't smell up the house... Dino's was that freaking smokey.

This place needs a good scrubbing and better ventilation before I could ever up the rating.

The Buffet

This is my favorite buffet on earth, which is saying something  because I hate buffets.

I went here for brunch (made a special trip here!) on 5/6/12 before I headed home to Vegas. First thing I eyed... the MUSHROOM RAVIOLI. I could eat a trough of that stuff.

Did I mention that champagne brunch is only $14.99/person?! Oh my geeze, the mushroom ravioli was as good as I remembered it to be... so I had two plates.

I did notice that the entire interior was completely different and they moved the dessert bar... and that the desert bar was actually really good! I loaded up on the chocolate covered strawberries and had a scoop of guava ice cream. Mmm!

The food was absolutely outstanding. I had a wonton soup (minus the wontons) and it was the best I've ever had. You could actually taste chicken broth and the bok choy was just right. The tomato and mozzarella salad was delicious!

The only thing that wasn't my absolute to-die-for favorite was the seafood cannelloni, although it was still very tasty. Our waitress kept the champagne flowing and gave us mixers to boot!

Still the best buffet and I will be back! (For the zillionth time!)

This is still probably my favorite buffet - I've been here literally 15 times. When my family lived in the Bay Area, we used to drive to Reno, to eat at this buffet, for dinner, then drive home. Of course we usually spent the day at Lake Tahoe, but the main reason was to eat at this buffet.

The service is always good, the food (minus cakes) are really good and the best thing on the entire spread is the porcini mushroom ravioli. I would come here (and have) just to eat plate after plate of this ravioli. It's so freakin' killer.

Don't waste your time eating at the other buffets in Reno, they're not 1/10 as good as this buffet at The Eldorado.

I went here for breakfast on 5/5/12 because I was in town for the NV GOP State Convention (Go Ron Paul!) Suffice to say, every food option at the Nugget had a HUGE line. At 8:30 AM, I strolled in and had a really nice breakfast. The buffet is on the small side, but all the food I tried was actually very yummy! (I hate Vegas buffets so... yeah, Northern Nevada has some surprisingly good buffets.)

Things that were outstanding:
Chili Colorado
Roasted Turkey and cranberries
Tomato & buffalo mozzarella with balsamic reduction.

Things that were good:
Shrimp
Sausages

Things that were okay:
French Toast
Chocolate raspberry cake

I saw a customer drop a roll on the ground, pick it up, and put it back on his own plate. That was pretty gross,  but clearly not the restaurant's fault.

Had a really nice waiter from Morocco. Service was fast and the food was great. No complaints here (other than the fact it's in the Nugget.)

I can't believe I forgot to rate this! This was one of the more laid back events, although it was packed with new people. I brought my cowoker /Yelp lurker Justin G. with me for this event. I'm pretty sure we're one of the few people that didn't dress up for this event (which might have made it more fun!)

The food was good and so were the drinks. I'm not a fan of oranges, but the orange dreamcicle drink was really good! I really enjoyed the artist who came to sketch our "wanted" photos. She was really personable and it was so good, I now have it hanging up at home.

One of the best parts was the game where we had to guess who was who based off of the facts people submitted about themselves. I LOVE events that force us to talk to strangers. It's much more fun than hanging around the few people you already know.

The patio was a great place to sit and chat. Overall, the event was great, and was made even better by the fact Justin and I both won a Yelp t-shirt at this event! I had a good time and I can't wait for the next events!

Catalina Island Kayak Expeditions

Update - 4/18/2012
This place was absolutely awesome. Three months later, I'm still talking to everybody about how this was the BEST part of the State side portion of my trip to Mexico.

First, I paid maybe $50 (if that) for a three hour expedition. The whole place is family run and they couldn't be more friendly people. Randy was the owner, and the guide who picked me up from the dock and gave a little historical tour on the way to the beach. He's super funny and friendly! Randy's daughter works the cash register and tells you that with the expedition you get equipment for free. We were given the use of dry bags and wet suits (separates, not one big suit) to wear while out on the ocean. You also get your certificate of completion from her when the tour is over.

The tour guides were AMAZING. I had never been kayaking before, and I left my vacation partner back at the docks. I'm SO glad I got a single person kayak. It is so thrilling to be out on the ocean, and to look over the side and see fish swimming underneath you. I wish I could have stayed on the ocean all day.

Kayaking is an excellent workout, and we took a cookie break (also included) on turtle rock. Our guides gave us a history of the island while we were out on the ocean - it's like a historical walking tour, but in a kayak. Hands down, best experience I've had in a long time. I want to go back so badly.

Don't worry about being a novice - it's really easy. There was even an 8 year old girl and her dad in one of the two person kayaks (granted, her dad did a lot of paddling when she got too tired.)

I would 10000% recommend going out on any number of kayaking expeditions with this company. I had a great experience that I can't wait to do again!

I used to like the Denver airport, but it's really losing its luster. Same goes for their food selections. My stomach was literally growling on the airplane from DC to Denver so I had to grab something. I skipped my usual spots that I hit up when I'm in Denver and grabbed a personal combination pizza for $4. This is probably the cheapest place to grab some food in this airport and the pizza was pretty decent. The cashiers were overly polite in a weird sort of way.

This is literally the ONLY place to grab something in this airport without it being jammed packed. There's only three food options in this terminal, this being one of them, so you have slim pickings.

I ordered a sugar-free hazelnut Italian cream soda. The girl behind the counter said she'd never made one before and asked if I wanted milk as she was making it. I said, "sure." She said, "okay" and handed me the drink, sans milk. I just drank some out of my cup and added some milk at the bar. Whatever. It cost about $3.15.

The cashier told me that she doesn't get free wi-fi either as an employee. That sucks!

Easy enough bank. The tellers are friendly and the place looks pretty brand new. Biggest peeve is that they tell you to consistently call customer service for pretty much any and all questions that you have. They also have a drive thru for banking on the go.

Came here on 4/15/12 with my sister and her boyfriend because one of my classes required us to come visit.

Pros: LOTS of pinball games, free to enter, decent parking, some games have labels giving history about the machines,  not expensive.

Cons: DIRTY, really dark, smells funky (this is true of any place that guys who probably own Magic cards or Warhammer figures, congregate) and people hog all the newer games.

If this place got a wash, and there was some way to clean up the back area, or at least organize it a little bit (it looks like a garage) I'd bump it up to four stars. Otherwise, it's good for what the owner offers - his collection of pinball to the public for the cost of a few coins.

There's a very small selection of goods. I bought a bag of Thai flavored chips. They were past their "best by" date, but they tasted good, so I didn't care. They definitely sell more cigar products than food at this place.
