Epic. Food. Fail = Zero stars.

I came here after checking Yelp and seeing friends sing the praises of Thai Grill. I went in excited, hungry, and so happy to find a well-received place not horribly far from where I work. The bar was set high, sure, but not unreasonably so.

I ordered the shrimp and veggie tempura to nosh on while I waited for my friend to show up. She was driving an even longer distance, but I was too hungry to wait! I had a shrimp that seemed too soft and a couple small pieces of zucchini. (A) This was NOT tempura batter; there were two styles of batter/breading on the plate. (B) The batter was so thick that there were wet pockets of uncooked batter on the insides. (C) Some of the pieces looked like they had been re-fried at some point.

When M showed up she asked me what the hell I was eating and I explained that I was sending it back with the above explanation. The waitress was nice enough to listen to me and replace it with some Thai dumplings. Too large, dry, and with a wrapper that was soggy and falling apart, they *did* have an OK flavor. But it was just OK.

The thom kha soup was decent. Not my favorite, but edible. They love their fish sauce here, the flavors are way too obvious. Other than that and my personal preference that it be a tad creamier, it was the spice level I wanted and generally OK. Definitely the highlight, and that's not saying much today.

The shrimp panang damn near killed me, and not in a good way. I took some of just the curry, then with some vegetables... so far, I kinda liked it. A little bland, but I figured I could spice it up a bit. Then I had a shrimp. Even as I bit into it I knew it was going to be a problem. The shrimp was barely cooked: take all the sauce off of it and it was still grey, translucent, and in need of more time in the kitchen.

We pointed that out and ended the meal. Thankfully I had allergy meds in the car; I had a few decent bites of the curry in which the shrimp was cooked, then the shrimp itself... and I questioned the tempura, too. Bad juju and a bad reaction.

The cook apparently said this was her specialty; this is how she always does it. Nothing about the response indicated a bad day or an off dish or an off ingredient.

The waitress was nice enough, but that was the best thing about the whole experience. The service was slooooooooooow (2 hours for lunch?) and at one point I had to offer to come to her to get her help. We had to ask for water refills. Then, after the meal is over and we're sorting out the semi-OK parts... we are informed that they can only take cash today (of which neither of us had any on us) because their system was broken. When we said we only had cards with us, she wanted to take a card and run it on a system in the back (no receipts, mind you, and what system would this be?!) and we could come back and sign for it later?

I said I wasn't comfortable with that arrangement and wondered why no one said anything during the two hours we were there? That, and given the failure of the whole experience, found us suggesting that this meal be taken care of.

Not just no, but hell no. It was my first and last time there. Disappointed doesn't begin to cover it. Show owner comment »

I don't know what happened, but AYCE Tuesdays are a bust for our crab-hungry group of friends. This makes me more than sad as it was a whole experience: food, drinks, environment, service... it all made for good times and a great meal. Tuesdays were our thing (as you can see from my last review).

Sadly, I haven't had a great meal here in a very long time.

I have done my "Feeling Crabby Tuesday" maybe... twice?... in the past couple of months: the crab is coming out with soft shells, it's over-salted, and it's just not as tasty as it once was. Sure, once in a while it would happen in the past, we would note it and point it out, and then all was well. Unfortunately it has become more the rule than the exception.

I said a while ago that I was done but then a couple weeks ago I had a yen for it. I convinced a girlfriend to go with me and.... no. Just... no. The crab was salty and soft-shelled (not the good kind) and just didn't live up to the previous amazingness that was the Tuesday siren-song for our seafood loving mates.

The bisque has also made me sad. The general flavor profile is still mostly good and, depending on your server, loaded with real lobster. But I have been able to see and taste the cornstarch (or other white powdery food thickener) in the soup the last two times I had it (in a bisque?!). Add to that the problem with the consistency being inconsistent? Ugh. One of my previous favorites, now off the list.

I tried changing to the clam chowder on a few occasions but it's just OK. Not bad, but not great. I wouldn't go there if I was specifically looking for CC.

One of the servers doesn't have a TAM card. While he is personable and genuinely interested in making your stay with them a good one, it is inconvenient to have to leave your table to get drinks for you and your friends from the attached Doc Holliday's Saloon. At that point, you are becoming your own server. Not why I go to a sit-down place.

Some highlights do exist... I am not trying to burn an effigy. The two stars come from some really good points - just that they are unfortunately weighed down by the rest. :(

Service is usually fast, friendly, and they are pretty good about communicating with you when the kitchen is processing a lot (think AYCE on Tuesday, if they are busy and have 15+ orders at a time). Sometimes you have to wait a minute, but speed isn't usually a problem.

The coleslaw is decent, as is the corn on the cob, the lobster salad, and the lobster escargot (buttery garlicy goodness!). The mac n' cheeses are rich and yummy (not my thing, but everyone I know who has tried them loves them). Everyone who eats them loves the fries, too!

I have had some of the Lobstah Dinnah and found the lobster to be sweet and tasty, if a little on the small side and just a tad salty but not overly so. It was definitely hot and fresh (we watched the little guy be picked from tank!).

----

Only once did I have an issue with the overall evening to the point I asked for a concession. It was the food, yes, but also the attitude of the server that put us over the top. In the interest of honesty and fairness: they split the bill with us and we promised to come back. We did! A few times. This is written after many dissatisfied visits.

Sadly, I don't think there will be another one.

All. You. Can. Eat. Crab. Legs.

(We'll come back to that part... are you hungry yet?)

I have had the lobster enchiladas and was a bit "meh" over them. Not bad, necessarily, but I expected more. The sandwhiches have all gotten rave reviews from my tablemates. A simple order of crab or lobster has always been good.

The salad has always been fresh except, admittedly, one night I wanted a little coleslaw to go... and I got a very little sample-pack size and it was not fresh and way heavy on the mayo. That made me a bit wary. But each time since then, it has been crisp, fresh, and tangy without being doused in mayo.

I love their bisque and clam chowder and, as I said opening this post, I love the AYCE crab on Tuesday nights.

It's always hot, fresh, and tasty. You get a ton of crab and all the tools you need to dig into it. They offer all the extras if you want them: butter, coleslaw, fries, etc. Not for me, though... I am a purist. Give me the crab, and no one gets hurt. Legs, claws, and bodies; freshly steamed and brought to the table steaming hot and with a lot of lemon. A bit messy, and totally worth every paper towel and wet towlette on the table.

There are no limits, as I have witnessed in a group setting... As long as you keep ordering it, they will bring it to you. A table for two? No problem. A table for 8? No problem. And always with a smile.

Service has been slow on occasion, but it's always friendly, personable, and dedicated to making sure you have what you want and enough of it to make you happy.

Oh.... Do not miss some of the pastas... the crab mac n' cheese my friend had a few weeks ago made me miss mac n' cheese something FIERCE! It was amazing!

A great go-to-spot for eating in or taking out. Doc Holliday's being connected, there is also full bar service. It's handy to have, let me tell ya...

... and I will; maybe I'll see you on a Tuesday!

CMYE: Yelp Night With Frankie Moreno

Category: Local Flavor
Neighborhood: The Strip

5.0 star rating
Update - 4/11/2012 1 Check-in Here
As part of a CMYE invitation through Yelp, I found myself seated in a shared booth staring at the stage waiting for some middle-aged guy named Frankie Moreno to perform some sort of lounge lizard show that would make me go, "hmmmm, OK, sure, why not."

To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. Blues, rock, big band, jazz... some covers plus fantastic originals... this was *no* middle-aged lounge lizard. (And, FYI Frankie.... your billboards do you NO justice. I know some photogs if you want to change them up! ;))

The show is exciting, the humor ranges from dry to droll, and the interaction between those on stage and, at some points, the stage and the audience, is high-energy and highly entertaining. Before the show was half over I knew I wanted to return.

Frankie and his band (in which his brother Tony plays bass) have a history, a relationship, and it shows. They are more than a group of musicians who play together... they play off each other, with each other, and for each other. They are on stage as much to support their vision and their communal love for what they do as they are to entertain you and me. And the makeup of the band? WOW! The combination of brass, string, guitars and that piano are phenomenal... wait until you hear Eleanor Rigby done by these guys. If you weren't a believer before they play that, you will become one.

The tone was expertly changed around as the show progressed, slowing down into acoustic in some places and ramping back up to powerful and vibrating to get the crowd going again.

Frankie has a voice and he knows how to use it. Singing or speaking, it's real, unaffected, and brings you in. It is just as much one of the instruments as the cello or the trombone.

Add to all of this that they are fantastic people (meet and greets for the win!) who truly love what they are sharing with you. Whether talking about the show, their love of creativity, or their love for each other and what they do in this life, you will not be disappointed in their spirit and drive. It's palpable and, to circle back, emanates from them on stage as much as off.

Go see the show. Take some friends, and enjoy the evening. You will not be disappointed.

Overall, this was a great way to have a Happy Burstday! The show was a lot of fun (separate review to be done over on that page) and the Yelpers were fantastic!

Ticketing was easy and efficient, seating was great (I loved the shared booth seating that allowed me to meet 2 more Yelpers!), and the show was far more entertaining than I anticipated! So far, so good!

Moving from the post-show public meet-and-greet to 107 Lounge was a little slow, but let's be fair and acknowledge that the elevators shooting us all up to the top of the tower only hold so many people at a time. :)

Getting up to the lounge and finding our little party space was easy. We were afforded a lot of room, various seating arrangements and, of course, a phenomenal view of downtown Las Vegas!

Chatting away, some folks enjoying what I understand to be very yummy food, and then who walks in but Frankie and the boys! Woohoo! Cool, casual, and very personable, it was a great way to ice the Burstday cake! Conversations flowed, the feel was laid back and easy, and everyone seemed to mingle and mix and make new friends. A really great way to top off the evening.

Only four stars for this part:

While Sasha (the Strat staffer working with Misty on this event) was AMAZING and friendly and showing no signs of any stress or strain - the woman is fantastic! - the rest of the staff was a little slow on the uptake. Mainly? The servers in 107. Specific to this event, the service was slow, a bit shaky, and one of the servers just ooooooozed the vibe of "I really don't want to be here with you." As it was a ticketed event, they had the numbers for those thirsty Yelpers who were going to be descending upon them with drink tickets, cash, and a yen for a good craft cocktail or three. The saving grace was an amazing young lady who, even though she was getting off her shift, still came back to help out and keep everyone going. Huzzah!

A fantastic night with fantastic people. Thank you, Mama Misty and Yelp!

Of course, I went back.

I had a dermal in my sternum (originally by Boss Bondage of Oregon and kink fame - great job!) but because of the shenanigans of a friend which caused it to unseat, I took it out last June and let it heal up. Fast forward almost a year later and I am on the phone with Miguel to schedule a new one.

In three words: damn near painless. The man is a genius. We were able to put it in the same spot and, aside from the obvious pressure of inserting it, there was NO piercing pain. None. I breathed, I was ready, and when he said I was done... I was shocked. (Pleasantly so, of course!)

Miguel remembers everything. We talked about how to take care of it, the concern of scar tissue from before and how we can prevent issues, and what to do if I have questions. Miguel is one of my favorite body mod folks because he is PROactive versus REactive. As he said, he "can't help if [he] doesn't know what's going on. Things are easier to take care of and address as soon as it is needed, instead of waiting and seeing..."

It's been about three weeks, it's healing nicely, and I couldn't be happier.

Now, what else needs shiny metals bits stuck into it? Hmmm....

Whether you want tattoos or piercings, these guys know what the hell they are doing.

I had heard the name from a friend and so went in to check it out. I wanted a custom tattoo to incorporate my name, Gemini, into the Burning Man symbol as commemoration of my first trip home to the playa. It was a long time coming and this tattoo was extremely important to me.

I walked in (no appointment, FYI), sat down with Zach (who, I believe, has now moved to another shop) and explained the idea in my head, roughly sketched it out for him, and discussed ideas on placement, size, etc. I left him to come up with something and went to run some errands. He called me a few hours later and said he was ready.

When I returned he had come up with the exact idea of what was in my head. We started immediately. I really appreciated the time he took and, while we were working, together we came up with some embellishments that really made it pop.

I was so happy with my experience that I went back that night and Miguel did a nose piercing for me. The next month, a girlfriend and I went back for more piercings.

Fast forward another couple of months and I went back for a custom tattoo that spans both wrists. Special thanks to Gary who helped me customize it just *so* and make sure I was completely happy.

Clean, professional, creative, and not afraid to share their opinions to make sure the end result is something you want to wear and show the world.

I have recommended others to Sted Fast and have watched them work on friends.

Very happy with them and I will be going back!

Update - 3/8/2012 26 Check-ins Here
I am going out on a limb and giving it 3 stars, another upgrade. I am on the fence about it. Go with me on this... think of all three reviews as one big one and you will see how I got here.

The A-OK, 3 star improvements: The salsa has been pretty damn tasty of late. Not too thin, great on the spice. The enchilada chicken nachos (no beans, please!) were really good, flavorful, tender and crispy where appropriate, and the sauce was great. And, I can admit, I have a soft spot for their mexican corn. The queso dip is decent. Not quite a 3, but not a 2. It's been a little inconsistent, but the flavors are rich and we do keep trying it because there is something about it we really like.

The not-so-fantastic, 1-2 stars: The street tacos are hit or miss. Some days they seems fresh and tender and tasty. Others, they are dry and just not appetizing. The guacamole is fresh, but I am just not getting the flavors I want from it. My friends and I are still a little entree-scared; once in a while someone goes down that road and usually they are just not enticed to do it again.

The biggest reason for the upgrade in 3.... 2.... 1...

Fantastic, 5 stars, to Jennifer and Anya, who are amazing behind the bar. It's not just about the drinks, which are great. It's the whole experience. They are friendly, quick with a smile, and, truly, THE biggest reason I have so many damn check-ins at this place. This is not discounting the others I chat with when I go for Happy Hour (2 for 1 margaritas and other specials are easy on the wallet!)... but these two draw us in and, no matter if it's just me, me and a friend, or a group of us, we always have a great time.

So, I am here all the time. I snack on occasion... but I am really here for the company I keep with my friends and the fantastic servers and bartenders who make it worthwhile. It's not just about the food, but the experience. It's knowing that I can go in when Jen and Anya are working and know that, even if I drank water all night (not likely, but you get the point), I will have a great time and want to come back again.

That is, after all, what you want... right?

CJ, a manager, had contacted me and asked me to call him about my experiences. We chatted and I said I would give them another try.

Amy recognized me (good or bad, I was impressed) and made no bones about apologizing for that first night and expressing her hope that this time would be different. We shared pleasantries and my guests and I bellied up to the bar for our meal.

CJ introduced himself, offered to make us some drinks, and seemed on a mission to make the perfect blackberry margarita. He didn't fail; the drink was great! Fresh and fruity, he made it with muddled blackberries and fresh limes (no mixes!). It was delicious.

Guacamole Flight - The chipotle had the bite to it that I was hoping for (chipotle, duh?) but it was undercut by too much acid. It challenged what should have been a yummy chipotle smokiness. The plain guacamole was just that, plain, and the mango was plain with mango chunks thrown in. Edible, but I was hoping for more ingenuity, flavor. We tried a little salt in to pop it a bit, but no go. The texture of all three was perfect, so credit where it's due.

Salad: Caesar. Sysco? It didn't taste like a house made dressing. Meh.

The BBQ nachos came out as a small size when he ordered the large. They fixed it quickly. My friend really enjoyed the combination and found it to be tasty and well executed. I liked the BBQ sauce but thought it needed more cheese. That said, the flavors were good and the chicken was tender. A good dish.

Florentine nachos. I was skeptical about the cheese sauce; I tried it before and found it supremely disappointing. CJ gave us a small ramikin of it with some chips and we loved it. The cheese was perfect, the prosciutto was crispy, the spinach chips were fresh, and it all worked together very well. I even took my leftovers home and fed them to friends. I don't really do leftovers, much less nachos, but these were worth sharing that night.

The chicken sandwich was a bit on the dry side, but overall it was a decent, basic, grilled chicken sandwich. The sweet potato fries really made my friend happy.

The service was great. Friendly, quick with the drink refills, and extremely helpful if anything was needed. We really were very well taken care of.

Full disclosure: We were well into our entrees when CJ mentioned he was going to buy our entrees (we covered the rest). It was appreciated. It was a welcome combination of excellent service, tasty food, and - yes, I checked - clean and stocked bathrooms! While there were some standout points, I am still hesitant to give too many stars... not everyone will have this experience, and as much as it was appreciated and very good, it's not the daily M.O.

    ***
I knew it would be a singular and special visit if I was to be waited on by the manager. Balance, fairness and *reality* are key, so I did go in and see him... but I also went again as a "regular" customer.
    ***

Amy recognized me right away. After I was seated, our waitress, Sam, immediately came over and took my drink order. As recommended, I tried the red sangria. She said it was not as sweet as some sangrias but fruit came on the side. The (small!) glass came packed with ice, garnished with lemon and lime wedges. So, slightly sweetened red wine over ice. It wasn't a bad drink, per se; but it wasn't a good sangria. The citrus helped, but I wanted more fruit, depth, and, yes, more actual drink.

We opted instead for a pitcher of the blackberry margaritas. Just as I remembered them, sweet but not too sweet, freshly made, and packed with real fruit. Score!

The chips were a bit too oily and needed salt, which we added. Still, they were good, hot, freshly made and crisp.

Dinner: Sonoran Dog sans bun or beans. We got the hot dog, wrapped in bacon (crispy! yay!), on a plate with ramikins of cheese, mayo, mustard, and diced tomatoes. My avocado-lime "salsita" (*great* kick to it!) was missing and had to be requested. Suggestion: replace the bun with lettuce and create the dish as you would with a bun. The presentation fell flat and, because it wasn't constructed, the flavors, too, were missing something. The veggies (instead of fries) were fabulous! Corn, onions, and peppers well roasted and seasoned. Best thing here so far!

The coconut flan was generously portioned, creamy, and the caramel sauce was very, very good. Rich and flavorful, it was perfect.

And, yes, we checked...the bathrooms needed attention. Once I commented on it, they were better, but far from good, clean, and well stocked.

The "entertainment" wasn't. It was unfunny, way too loud, prohibitive to conversation, and, for a family place on a Thursday, rude and inappropriate.

    ***
Overall? I commend them for their efforts, but it's still "Meh, I've experienced better." Amy, CJ, and Sam are amazing, and there are some rare menu highlights, but I am just not excited about it.

I tried. Twice. I just can't do it again.

A large group of us went for Cinco de Drink... err, Cinco de Mayo. Partly because it's Mexican food, partly because of location, and partly (probably the biggest part) because of the specials and opening deals they offered.

The nacho specials weren't bad, but they were short lived. They are not still on the menu. While they were generally tasty, they didn't offer enough of the key ingredients (i.e. meat choices, etc.) and we were digging through the chips to find what we had ordered.

The service was bad. There's no other word for it. It was slow, even with multiple servers watching over our group and others. I had to go to the bar to order drinks more than once.

I spoke with the manager, Amy, about it. She was great helping me set up our large group and after when I talked to her about our experience. She explained the situation (staffing issues, temporary fill-ins). While I found that understandable but not excusable, we discussed the possibility of another try.

That said, a month or so later I went back for a quick dinner in the hope that, outside of the "holiday" crowds, that it would be different.

I was, again, disappointed. I opted for the custom nachos and my guest had the enchiladas. The nachos were small and expensive (I didn't even add meat), the chips seemed stale, and the sauces and salsas seemed as if they'd been left out for a day. Her enchiladas were so spicy as to be almost inedible.

The waitstaff was slow and inattentive, and we had to flag down the waitress more than once.

We had to bring to the staff's attention that the restrooms hadn't been looked after in some time.

I will not be going back.

Every Sunday morning finds me and a group of friends bellied up to the bar for $1 bloody marys until noon. Mild? Medium? Spicy? They have it all. Don't want a cold glass of inebriated, spicy tomato goodness? Order something else! Low, low prices and a full bar take care of my gin and tonic friends and my diet coke friends alike!

The bartender, Rachel, is adorable, personable, and fantastic at slinging the bottle with a smile.

No real food options IN the bar (chicken wings, chicken fingers, and cheese sticks... maybe a french fry?) however, there is the amazing Weiss Deli next door and a Trader Joe's in the shopping plaza. Create a picnic and bring it in; you can even use the phone at Dylan's to order from the deli.

Jukebox, sports on TV, a pool table, and quite a few seating options (booths, hightops, and - of course - the bar!) make Dylan's a comfy regular spot for our regular get togethers.

Cheers!

I went for lunch on Thursday afternoon and the place was packed! Great sign, usually, so my giddiness continued as I waited for my friend and hungrily watched other patrons place their orders and receive their lunches. The place is cute, clean, and comfortable. There were two large parties (one leaving, one ordering) when I came in. All in all a good vibe, good music in the background that still allowed for conversation, and smiles abound. I was excited!

It pretty much ended there. I really, really, really wanted to like this place. I would have preferred to have loved this place, but I would have settled for an "I love you, but not in THAT way" sort of conversation here.

Alas, I am not sure I want a second date.

First: The service was VERY slow. Yes, it's a small place. And mostly it was service with a smile. But it was slow. We all but flagged the waiter down to order our drinks. And then again to order lunch. He kept pointing out how slammed they were. I could see it, I sort of get it, but then there should be more help on the floor. He was genuinely kind and happy to help us, but it doesn't make up for the fact that once both of us were seated, it took 15 minutes-plus to finally let them know what we wanted to eat. Add to that the wait for the food itself? My hour lunch was approaching an hour and I hadn't had anything to eat yet.

Never got a drink refill. Had to ask for silverware. Getting the to-go boxes (I took those greens to go!) and the checks was OK, but then had to wait for the payments to be processed while watching the waiter do other things.

OK, OK, there were SOME good points.

Here we go... food. I decided to try the liver and onions. You get to choose three (huge portions here!) sides. I went with mac and cheese, collard greens, and fried cabbage. (Oy, I did not come here expecting to adhere to any diet, that's for sure!)

The large portion of liver was cooked perfectly but the cut was off. Too much connective tissue running through it. I'd rather smaller pieces cut away from the parts you can't chew/eat. It had a hint of a breading/coating on it that was not bad, not over the top. But I had a small bit where it was all flour. No bueno.

The collard greens were the best ever. Seriously. Eat them. (Insert "Eat All The Greens! meme here.)

The mac was good, definitely homemade. I only tasted it because pasta is not my friend, but the flavors and composition were really decent. Not amazing, but decent.

The cabbage was, against all odds, really great. Too oily/buttery for MY tastes, but still managing not to be wilted and brown; it was bright, a tad crisp. Surprisingly good but slightly over on the grease scale for MY tastes (trying to be fair... it is, after all, "fried cabbage!").

S's massive portion of meatloaf with rice with gravy were good, she said, though the yams were a tad on the raw side. She also had the mac and agreed: good, yes, tasty, but nothing to write home about. (To go box for the food here, too, so that says a little something.)

Another thing I didn't love? The photos on the menu didn't seem to totally match the food. Not just like, "hey, mine doesn't look like that," but in a "they don't even offer that on their menu!" sort of way. I felt cheated that I couldn't order cole slaw or green beans, even though they were so prominently displayed.

Huge portions of mostly OK-ish food. Smiley but slooooow service. Prices are fine based on portions, but when it's just OK? *sigh*

Just not excited about a return trip.

James is AMAZING. Seriously. Not only was he able to give me honest, clear, layperson-terms advice PRE-purchase of a new-to-me used car, when I did make my decision he was my go-to guy for the *cough* awesome *cough* major work I needed only 600 miles into it.

Yeah, that.

I had made an appointment with him to have the timing belt (original, 105k on an '03 Tiburon) checked out and generally get her first real maintenance taken care of. Always the first thing I do if I buy a car used. Plus, I had another mechanic give me the deets on her before her purchase... Let's just say I should have gone to James.

That morning, on the way to work, I lost all ability to move forward. Being on the highway helped (inertia, baby!) so I had a little time to move over, get down an exit, and eventually stop. Ugh.

AAA. Tow truck. Car to Hondatronics while I go to work.

Antsy and anxious, I kept calling but they hadn't had a chance to really go over her yet. The next morning, I got the call.

"Are you sitting down?"

Yeah, that.

It was not good news. The clutch and flywheel required replacement. I have the photos. It's not pretty.

I can't lie. I cried. I *just* bought this car.

James was, as I said at the beginning, AMAZING. He talked me through all my options, explained everything in detail about the parts and labor involved, and even gave me advice on buying the parts myself and having them shipped to him. Sure, it saves a few bucks... but then I have no warranties. We looked at everything. In the end, he did it all - parts and labor - blazing fast (we talked at 3ish in the afternoon... I had my car back by 11am the next day). They worked into the evening and did everything they could to make me as happy as they could in this situation. The education didn't stop there. He showed me the old parts, discussed with me the hows and whys of what we did. It still hurt the pocketbook - not his fault by any means - but my head and heart were good.

Truly, truly, unlike any other shop I have ever been to. And, as long as he will have me as a customer, the only one I will go to here in Vegas.

So, two months later... ;)

***

Such an amazing experience! Thank you Yelp Elite Squad!

It was a cold evening made hot, hot, hot by melting rubber, tacked tachometers, and the palpable need for speed! After signing the requisite "you are agreeing to be strapped into a speeding vehicle for 3 laps of your own volition" waivers and such, you got the Richard Petty Driving EXPERIENCE.

From the donning of the suit, the fitting of the helmet, and the OMG-I-AM-GETTING-INTO-THIS-RACE-CAR.... the whole night was fantastic. The crew were cool and collected dealing with all of us starry-eyed (it was not nervousness, it was stars! Stars I say!) passengers. It was a little unnerving getting the special neck-protector-thingy before you climb in the window, and then getting strapped in. You start to wonder, just a small bit, if....

... ah, but when the driver takes off, you stop wondering anything, you stop caring about anything other than taking in the moment.

It's fast, a bit loud, and A-FREAKING-MAZING. The acceleration takes you somewhere else, the smooth operation by the driver to take you up the wall and back down going into a turn makes it all look so easy. I think my grin is permanently attached to my face at this point (or maybe it's just residual G-forces? Who's to say?). When the driver asks how I am doing, my two-thumbs up couldn't be higher or more enthusiastic!

The 3 laps are over too quickly, but the rush is so worth the short ride around the track. I have ridden in race cars before... but not these bad boys. The amount of detail that goes into building them out - and, of course, drive them - is insane. Let's be fair when we acknolwedge my short experience gave me but a glimpse... but when I say he made it look easy I am sure it is just that... looks. So much to watch INSIDE the car... and then you consider when I am not sitting there, he's racing against 20-40 or so others?

The whole of the Experience really is an experience. A great bit of fun, a fantastic way to get your blood pumping, and a fun, fun way to interact with my fellow Yelp friends!

Thank you, again, Yelp Elite Squad for the amazing opportunity!

In a word?

Omnomnom...

Wait? Is that a word? It's a sound, for sure. And we made it a lot devouring our dinner at this great place!

Fresh, plentiful, tasty, creative. Oh man. I have a new favorite, fo' sho'. A little slower than some places (as others have pointed out) but worth it, I think. They take their time to make sure it's executed perfectly. Service with a smile and we lacked for nothing.

The shitake mushroom roll was earthy and perfectly balanced with the crunch of veg and a touch of crispy tempura. Served with some tempura fungi on the side, and it's a complete dish!

The Rose and White Rose rolls have been entered into my foodporn um, brain bank... ;) No rice (perfect for me): it's amazing fish, sauce, and a touch of veg here and there... WRAPPED IN MORE FISH. #winwin

We also had a soft-shell crab roll (the name escapes me and it's not on the online menu) that was similar. More fish wrapped in fish. Really. #happyMuse

We had a few other rolls, including the Rock and Roll, the Firecracker, a crunchy scallop roll (served with additional panko-breaded scallops! Yum!), and an unagi/avocado roll. All very, very good. The sauces were not overly used - Bonus points! - just enough to go with the flavor profiles they were trying to create. No sauce-drowned fishies here!

To taste the fish on its own (as Bentern says in his review, without the "tacky" sauce), we did order some nigiri including salmon, tuna, and uni. The uni, my favorite but not that of my dining companions, was fresh, sweet, and perfect. Always a great sign of a great place, IMHO.

Again I have to point out that I like that they don't pack their rolls with rice (and have a LOT of non-rice options). The menu is *extensive* (the online menu is a fraction of the options you actually have). In addition to the sushi and sashimi, they offer some entrees as well.

I don't mind a lack of AYCE because I don't eat enough to make those "deals" worth it. However, I could see the draw in having something here... They can be on the pricey side. That said, Friday night we had a hell of a meal between the three of us... a ton of great food, a couple cucumber salads (meh... just a lot of cucumber in a martini glass... wasn't impressed), some soup, and all those rolls. For... 70ish bucks? Three people? Not bad at all for what you are getting.

And now I am hungry... Dinner, anyone?
