The walls are covered with plaques and pictures from different sports teams and other community groups that have benefited from the generosity of this store.
So, if the delicious food and pleasant employees weren't enough for you to eat here, hopefully their charitable contributions will help convince you.
Coming here for lunch is fun, especially if you're eating later than normal. Usually the dining room is pretty empty so the already nice servers are all over you. Oh - and they have a great lunch menu. Make sure you come before 3:00 PM to take advantage of it.

Seriously. I don't think I've ever had an experience quite like this one.
First, I have been having dreams about their delicious Caesar salad. It's been a few years since I last enjoyed it and recently I've been having a strange craving. Either they changed their salad or I was thinking of somewhere else because it wasn't what I had in mind. It was chopped instead of large pieces of Romain and the dressing was mostly just oil and vinegar. I didn't eat much of it and even told my server that I didn't like it. For some reason I was still charged.
Fast forward to when my pork chop was served. The menu clearly lists it as being served with seasonal vegetables. I got mashed potatoes. I double checked the menu in front of the server and she asked if I wanted a side of vegetables. Sure. She returned a few minutes later with a spoon and a bowl and tried to scape the mashed potatoes off of my plate. I'M NOT KIDDING! I looked at her and asked her if she was serious. She said she was trying to help. Sorry, honey. That's not how you help this situation. Either take it back to the kitchen and have it re-plated or just bring out my vegetables. Don't try to take them off my plate WHILE I'M EATING! As our server walked away she said "rude" out loud to another server (as if we wouldn't have heard her).
Anyway, you'd think that would be the end, but it wasn't.
My friend Adam jokingly told the server that she must hate us. She said, "not you." That's what sent me over the edge. Fortunately for her there were kids around and I didn't read her for filth at the table. Instead, I went directly to the manager and told him about my experience. He apologized and said he'd "take care of it." I asked him what that meant and he said he would address her attitude and take care of our bill. Well, I guess he changed his mind and decided just to comp my meal. I didn't expect a free lunch, but it seemed kinda cheesy to only comp me when my two friends witnessed everything.
Two stars for the good food. Better luck next time.
PS: We still left a $20 tip for our $67 bill, even though our server didn't deserve it.

The real fun comes after dark. I can't tell you how many times I've had an amazing evening having drinks and singing along to whatever's playing on the juke box. It's cool because I'm never singing alone.
Oh! If you're a beer drinker they've got lots of different brews on tap and well as in bottles. No Bud Light, but that gives me an excuse to have a Miller High Life. Yeah, I'm classy like that. :)
I'm glad to report that parking isn't too much of an issue anymore because they have a really large fenced lot (and they made the driveway smoother, so it's no longer bumpy).

Delicious food, friendly people, and a really fun space unlike anything I was anticipating. Seriously. I had no idea about the amount of work and building that went into converting this place until I took a mini-tour with Kirsten G. and it's obvious that lots of thought went into everything.
When you come in off of Edgewood you're greeted by a giant bar that wraps around the entire left of the building and pushes out to make for a big area. To the right of the front door there is a sitting area decorated with a grand father clock, vintage jukebox, sofa, and a working VCR atop a huge wood-panel television. It made me want to watch E.T., but I digress. :)
The lunch menu has mostly sandwiches and their dinner menu is larger with heavier items like pasta. I had the "Spinozzi" which is chicken salad and arugula on awesome balsamic glazed ciabatta bread. It was really good and their fries have a delicious cheesy/garlicky mixture sprinkled on them, so needless to say I ate every last one.
In addition to the good food, their bar is apparently the place to be near last call (I've been told there are lots of "industry" folks in the crowd). You should stop by the next time you're in the neighborhood (which probably isn't that often, but it's closer than you think and if my fellow Yelpers are right in the earlier reviews I think this might be the next cool place to be in the ATL).
** Editor's Note: In case you were wondering why I changed my rating to 4-stars it's because parking is a little tricky. I was relieved to find out that the driveway next to the building is theirs and more convenient than trying to find a place on the street, but not enough for a perfect David K. score. :) ** -

This place just opened and is sure to become a destination for the hipsters. It's named after the owner's grandmother and features a thoughtful menu of Italian favorites mixed with salads and sandwiches that are all unique.
There's a huge bar and always a fun crowd.

I concur that there's nothing truly exceptional about the actual cake portion of these cupcakes... the real prize is on top. Yes, the icing. It's so buttery and delicious that you can't help but to lick your fingers when you're done eating. I'll always be a fan of pink icing and this is the only place I know of that prominently features it. I'm also a fan of the cinnamon cupcake... and sometimes the sweet potato.

Historic Oakland Cemetery

Fast forward to the weekend before Halloween 2009. My first visit was courtesy of Katie W. and the group she got together for the annual "Capturing the Spirit of Oakland" cemetery tour.
The tour was cool, but I was a little disappointed at the lack of ghost diversity. We were able to "meet" six different people and they were all rich white folks. Apparently there is a Confederate section... a Jewish section... and a section where they buried slaves. It would have been cool to learn more about their lives. Regardless, it was still interesting and a unique way to learn about Oakland's history.
I definitely encourage everyone to visit and to participate in some of the restoration programs that are run by the Historic Oakland Foundation. This is a site that needs to be preserved and maintained for future generations (even though there's no more room for new burials).

Overall the food was pretty good, although you couldn't have paid me to believe that the teriyaki chicken was actually chicken. I SWEAR it tasted like pork, although I'd rather not think too much about that. Whatever it was tasted pretty good and didn't make me sick, so I guess it doesn't really matter.
Has anyone else noticed the strange noise that the staff makes when someone walks in the door for lunch? I guess it's the RuSan's version of "welcome to Moe's!"
I moved here 3 years ago and I didn't think I wanted to live in Buckhead. You know, the traffic... the clubs... the traffic... Fortunately I made a pretty good investment when I bought my condo because a block away they demolished all of the clubs to make room for The Streets of Buckhead and across the street the Atlanta International School tore down all of the old apartments to expand their athletic field. Looks like the neighborhood is turning up.
Thanks to newly redesigned traffic patterns I rarely get caught in gridlock (seriously... it's happens so infrequently that I get surprised when cars start to back up during rush hour). I wish there were a few more things to do at night... well, other than eat. Actually, even if there were some clubs open I'd probably still go to Midtown to be with the gays.
Overall I enjoy living here and it seems to only get better. Now if only my property taxes would stabilize. That would make it awesome.

I've always called it Shotgun Kroger because every time I've gone there after dark a security guard at the door made me check my bag before entering. Even though I assumed this was to reduce shop lifting, I asked the guard why it was their policy and he said it was to prevent people from bringing weapons inside... hence my store nickname.
Anyway, Adam recently moved here from Houston and he tried to correct me and say this was Murder Kroger, not Shotgun Kroger. I was offended that he would question my knowledge and authority on Atlanta, but low-and-behold he was correct and he forwarded me the Yelp profile to prove it. Oops.
This store isn't really in that bad of a neighborhood, yet you wouldn't know it if you were to make a judgement solely on the conditions in and around the building. A few years ago it was remodeled and updated to look like some of the newer stores and it already looks like it could use a couple million bucks more to clean it up.
Now that there's a Publix down the street I go there instead. They're only about a mile away, but it's like night and day when you compare them. Maybe Kroger should take some notes. Hmm...
*By the way, I've grown out of the "I'm gay so I have to have a Prada bag/satchel/man purse to be fierce" phase, so the bag check is a moot point now. Regardless, I don't know of any other grocery store that has a mandatory bag check.
