I love this new service! It's completely free and provided by the GA Department of Transportation as an additional way to link their web-based NaviGAtor service to motorists. Now, you don't need a computer to get the most up-to-date information on traffic and road closings. All you have to do is call up and you can speak your intended route and it will tell you what's ahead (for example, you can call and say that you are on I-285 going west from exit 29 to I-85 and it will give you trip times, incidents, and average speed). You can also use this to report an incident like a malfunctioning traffic light and to request HERO service.
I've tried it and the voice recognition is almost perfect. You receive accurate information and if you need to speak to an operator you get connected in a matter of seconds.
No one likes traffic and it's not getting better. Save yourself a lot of stress by using resources like this to take control of your commute, instead of being trapped and then posting a Talk thread about how awful driving is. It's not the solution, but it's definitely better than it was before. Thanks, GDOT!

Post Offices
Listed in: Norcross? Nah. Peachtree…
Guess who got a Christmas present from Santa??! Apparently I was a good boy and so was this post office because they installed an Automated Postal Machine at the end of last year.
Ahhh... the relief I feel from being able to use the APM instead of waiting for employee assistance is similar to the refreshed feeling one might get after a hot stone massage.
There's still a lot to be fixed at the USPS (not just here - their corporate core). Since hell freezing over seems more likely, it's nice that I can avoid some of the service frustrations they're trying to repair by solving my own problem at this big metal box's touch screen.
Yes, I still mail letters. Cards mostly, but I guess there are probably some bills I don't pay online. My office is very close, so this is my go-to whenever I have to drop something off and I can't wait for our mail room.
The rare times I come inside it's usually pretty busy and they don't have an Automated Postal Machine. That's one of my pet peeves! I mean, they only have two employees working the counters. Wouldn't it be better for everyone if you could do some things yourself? My preference is to have someone serve me, but if that's not going to happen I'd rather not waste my entire lunch break in line here.
There are three pick-up times during the week and I think one or two on Saturday (I know it happens at least once).
"You better Google me and check my charges."

The shuttle buses are large and transverse areas that weren't designed for vehicles that size. They're diesel and replacing them with smaller, more efficient ones would probably make everyone's lives more enjoyable.
Anyway, they haul you to the offsite rental car area where two shacks are set-up in the middle of a sea of cars. The companies are separated by a washing bay that seems like something they should hide instead of driving customers past it, but I digress...
Everyone unloads and the office is suddenly packed. There are two self-service kiosks at the front. They're in an area without any signage indicating that they're for everyone and not priority customers, so everyone stands in line making things even slower.
I'm not afraid to step out of the crowd and I'd probably still be there if not for my sense of entitlement - I don't wait in line to get handed keys to a car I've already paid to drive.
They have a larger variety of vehicles in each car class than I expected. I reserved a full size and had my pick of several Impalas, a Malibu, and a Camry. There was a Maxima, but the people ahead of me claimed it before I could. I ended up with the Camry and did my best to do an exterior inspection. Unfortunately, that's nearly impossible in the dark. Luckily it all turned out fine. It was all good despite the feeling that they forgot to clean the interior between customers.
