I'm giving Yelp a second chance and only due to my extended amount of traveling.
I've had a total of 10 reviews removed by Yelp. Why? Business owners complained when I gave them one star or when the Church of Tom Cruise (Scientology) threatened them.
I have posted about these companies based on my own experience and dealing with them, and yet that is why my reviews are removed. "You are supposed to review about your first hand experience with the company." REALLY? DUH!
I honestly think Yelp! moderators remove anything that has been flagged more than 2-3 times. Which is lame.
I had pictures of a company in Lynn, MA posted on the review......BLAM! Removed 5 days later. How can an exterior picture of the business be removed by a moderator? They were too busy probably just clicking "Remove" on everything they saw as fast as they could without paying attention.
Funny thing? How many pictures on the Yelp! reviews have ZERO to do with Yelp? I'm sure those two/three dog pictures really reflect on the company and the experience dealing with it right? Bull....
Yelp has provided me with so much help. I found interesting people, interesting reviews, new dining options and a decent community.
The bad? The moderators. My review on the Church of Scientology in Boston was removed. I listed my experience (ACTUAL EXPERIENCE) with the church and it's people and my review was flagged en masse by Scientologists. The moderator sent me an email that my review must be about the experiences I had. I DID THAT! MY REVIEW WAS BASED ON EXPERIENCE OF MYSELF AND OTHERS!
If Yelp wasn't so positive in other ways, I'd just laugh at the fascist ways that some moderators use their power. Watch now as my Elite status is removed because of this review. My freedom of reviewing will disapear as likely this review will.
Shame, I heard about many reviews being deleted for tiny reasons that had broken no rules......now I am one of those people it happened to. This isn't a democracy, but the moderators should abide by their own rules.

Why You Should Read My ReviewsI'm done with Yelp. Hopefully my old reviews can be of some use to people.
When I first joined Yelp! I dealt with nothing but helpful people. It was an excellent site, lots of great reviews. Especially in the Las Vegas section, which is helpful to me considering I go 3-4 times a year.
So what are my issues with Yelp now?
Let's see.....
#1. Removal of reviews. I was given a handful of notices about my reviews not meeting guidelines. (IE: Not reviewing a business based on experience, yet I did base it on my full experience). Many others speak of similar issues.
#2. Lack of quality control. There are far too many yelp members with one review either completely bashing a company or jocking the company. They leave no other reviews. So either it's someone who has a real beef with the company, or an employee, friend, family member of a company. Yelp claims they filter these reviews but yea......not really.
#3. Lack of respect for people who actually contribute. I've been on Yelp for over three years. Yet, many people who have been on for 3 months get Elite status without issue and without any real effort on their part. Meanwhile, it took Yelp over 3 years to give Las Vegas yelpers any real credit for their contributions......and I, myself withover 300 reviews got blatantly ignored for Elite in 2011. Even though I was Elite in 2009 and 2010.
I was told to "apply for 2011 elite" by one of the ambassadors. Considering I didn't do that in 2009 or 2010 it was odd. When I finally did, I "missed the cut" and was not approved. Lovely.
Let's be frank, Elite status is nothing important. Merely a flashly little title, however, when you've put out over almost 300 reviews......and you see someone with 20-30 reviews with Elite status.....and not you......it makes you wonder what the deal is.
#4. Yelp has turned into PlentyofFish or http://Match.com in the talk sections of many cities. Desperate men flock to Yelp in order to try to meet women and it's become less about reviews and businesses and more about wanting to practice the horiziontal mambo. The talk sections seem to be very rarely moderated.
#5. Extreme bias for some members or businesses. Most likely if you're reading my review, you've probably witnessed this.
........
Well Yelp members. Best of luck to you all. It was fun while it lasted.......
