Myung Dong Tofu Restaurant

I tried my first pot of soondubu in 2005 at the sister restaurant in Rowland Heights, which has better furniture, so Myung Dong will always have a special place in my heart.  Memories aside, this place is really good.  And cheap.  The food is solid, the banchan are plentiful, and the prices are great.

You'll get most bang for your buck if you go for one of the combos.  This past weekend, I had a soondubu + bibimbap combo.  Ordered the mushroom soondubu, medium spiciness, and it comes with an egg.  Perfectly seasoned.  The bowl of bibimbap was huge and pretty tasty too.  That combo was only $11.99! And comes with 6 different banchan.

This is solid Korean food, at unbeatable prices.  Definitely recommended.

I've walked by this place maybe a million times because it's in my hood but never ventured in after all these years.  Finally walked in today, and that was the best decision I made all day.

Bought a beef piroshki and raspberry hamentashen.  Holy crap, both were absolutely DELICIOUS.  The fried goodness of that piroshki was amazing.  Tasty as shit!  My only complaint is a small one - there wasn't as much filling as I'd like.  Still, though.  This is a tasty piroshki!

And that hamentashen (am I spelling it right?).  Again. Holy crap.  Buttery, sweet goodness.  The raspberry filling was great too.

Cheap and tasty, what more could you want! Run to Cinderalla and grab yourself some delicious Russian treats! I know I'll be back soon to get myself some more sweet 'n savory eats!

Tropiseuno deserves to be bumped up to 5 stars for being an always reliable happy hour spot.  This is one of my favorite HH spots in the City because the drinks are good and cheap, and the HH bar menu is extensive and legit.  Tacos, quesadillas, ceviche, flautas, and much more!  All very decently priced! You could even have an entire meal during happy hour, and save quite a bit of money thanks to those very happy prices!

Oh, and the chips and salsa are also delicious and always free!

This was the third week in a row that I've come here after work.  The last two weeks I came for dinner and was thoroughly satisfied.  This time, we made it to their happy hour, and my opinion of the place has gone down.

    Aite, here we go.

    HELLA GOOD:
+ Again, the chips.  It's all about the chips.  A++++++!
+ Prices are okay.  $2 for fish tacos, $5 for a really big quesadilla.  $5 drinks.  It's enough to fill you up without breaking your wallet.
+ Margaritas are VERY strong.  It usually takes about 2-3 for me to start feeling anything, but I was already getting tipsy after just one drink.

    HELLA BAD:
    - The guacamole had NO TASTE whatsoever.
    - The fish tacos tasted like mush.  No thank you.  I'll take a Del Taco one any day over this.
    - We ordered two chicken quesadilla suizas, but the server gave us two steak ones instead.  We didn't complain because the steak ones were fine too, but it's not too professional to mess up both orders like that.
    - The service.  DO NOT LIKE.  Okay, so first, our server gives us only one happy hour menu, and we had to ask twice before she gave us another one.  It's not like they're short on menus or anything, so why so stingy?  Second, we ordered our drinks, and then five minutes later she tells us, "Oh, btw, one of your drinks doesn't qualify for happy hour prices."  So we switched the drink right then, but it would've been much easier had she told us when we were actually ordering.  Also, as mentioned above, she messed up the quesadilla orders.  And finally, my foodmate asked for a paper napkin, and instead of giving us one, she PATS MY LAP and she's like, "You can use that" as she points to the cloth napkin sitting in my lap.  "We don't have any paper napkins here."  Five minutes later, we notice that there's all these stacks of paper napkins sitting at the bar.  WTF.  It's one thing to save paper, but flat-out lying to your customers?!  Terribad!

This should really be 2 stars for the happy hour, but the dinner is still pretty fantastic and very tasty, so I'll average it out and give it a 3.

I wish Yelp had a setting for half-stars.  This joint gets 3.5 in my book.  Four is too generous; 3 just seems too low (3/5=60% on a test = FAIL.  Right?!).

    So, yes, 3.5.

I came here tonight with some friends, thanks to a recommendation from Betty W.  (Spanks, Betty!), and it was surprisingly good.  Not spectacular, but good and chill.   Note:  This review is for the dinner there, not the Happy Hour.

    HOT:
+ The Chips.  Holy crap, they were tasty!  The salsas weren't too spicy (I fear the spice!), which I liked.  But man, it's all about them chips!  They're free too! Thin, crispy, WARM.  I like!
+ I looked at the happy hour menu, and was like OMG $2 fish tacos, $3 guacamole?!?!?  ME WANT ALL.  And then my friend pointed out that happy hour was only from 4pm-6pm.  We were there at 7:30pm.  Darn.  Why would you leave out the happy hour menu after it's over?  That's so cruel!  I was contemplating whether or not I should stick this in the negative column, but I thought those prices were pretty sweet, and it was definitely an incentive for me to come back to this place at an earlier time one of these weeks for cheap drinks + appetizers.
+ Chicken mole = good, but CONFUSING.  I couldn't pinpoint what it tasted like.  It was...spicy and thick and weird, but good?  I don't know.  It had chocolate in it.   Whaaa?!?!  Right?   It was really weird, but I liked it.  Sorry, that was not useful at all.  But all I can say is, try it out and decide for yourself.    I guess something about it was right; otherwise I wouldn't put it in the HOT column.
+ Those free beans: pinto, refried, and black beans.  And the tortillas.  That was really nice of them.
+ Nice waiters and good service.  Always a plus.
+ Good location! Right by the Powell BART station, so it's a good meet-up point after work for lots of folks.

    NOT:
    - The DARK DARK room!  I couldn't see my chicken!  I had no idea what I was cutting into; it made eating it VERY DIFFICULT.  DO NOT LIKE.
    - Chicken mole = weird.  Okay, you're asking, "How can she put chicken mole both in the 'HOT' AND 'NOT' section.  Doesn't that cancel it out?  Well, it was just odd-tasting in many ways.  Lots of sauce + confusing flavors = confused Vivian.  I didn't know what to think.

Final thought: I'll try this place for Happy Hour; it seems from other reviews that it would be a nice place for it.  Also, Beard Papa's is right next door; makes for a convenient dessert stop.

Their happy hour is freaking AWESOME. It's from 5-7pm, and it's 50% off all bar bites, plus $5 cocktail specials, wines, and I think $3 beers.  The bar bites menu is also totally legit, with items like PEI mussels, burgers, plantains, yuca fries, guacamole, calamari, and more!

I got two $5 cocktails, and they were STRONG. Well done! We also ordered the yuca fries ($2.50 only!) and the PEI mussels, which are cooked in a red tomato-y sauce with pieces of sausage.  Both were DELICIOUS!  The yuca fries came with this cheesy dipping sauce, and it was so good!

Our total after 4 drinks and 2 appetizers was only $30 (before tip).  Great pricing for a respectable amount of food and drink!

Man, I really want to come back here again ASAP, the happy hour is just THAT good! I can see this place quickly becoming my FAVORITE happy hour place in the City!

What a heavy meal! My friend and I came here tonight because we had a Scoutmob 50% off deal.  That deal makes this place worth it - if you don't have the deal, then I think this place is overpriced and not worth it.

We got:
+ Portobello mushroom fries: unique! Crispy! Delicious!
+ Fried clams: Tasted mostly like calamari to me, but a little more chewy.  Tasty because it's fried, otherwise it wasn't anything special.
+ Mini pot pies: By mini, they mean MINI. Tiny baby pies! You can eat one in two or three bites. Savory, yummy.  Not out-of-this-world, but enjoyable.
+ Maine lobster roll: That lobster was good.  The bread that they used was even better because it was insanely buttery.  A good combo.  This plate also comes with these fries that were shaped like normal fries but had the same texture as potato wedges.  There was also some mixed greens.  A good plate of food.

All of this came out to only $27 before tip, thanks to Scoutmob!  It was a very hearty meal, and I left the place feeling pretty damn stuffed but happy.  I'm not sure if I would come here if I didn't have that coupon but if I had another one, then yes it's definitely worth it.

US Half Marathon 2

My first half marathon! This was an awesome intro course for a 1/2 marathon newbie like myself, and I'm glad that my inaugural race was on such a breathtakingly beautiful course.  Here's my lowdown:

The Expo:
+ We went to Sports Basement around 2:30pm the Saturday before, and there was slight congestion in the Presidio.  There were energy drinks, electrolyte chews, Clif Bars, Zico coconut water, 5 hour energy, and some other stuff I can't remember.  Quite small for an expo, but I was happy for the freebies.

+ You pick up your racing bib and t-shirt here.  I liked the t-shirt design this year, but I would've preferred a long sleeve shirt.  They're warmer and more useful.  Don't be cheap, guys; make a long-sleeve shirt next time.

The Race: The Good:
+ Like I said, the course is breathtakingly beautiful. I took the 28 bus around 6am to the end of the line at Fort Mason, and I walked through the Fort Mason Green as dawn was breaking.  As you walk up the hills and then down another hill, you're greeted by a tranquil and gorgeous view of the Bay, with the shadowy currents and the purple-pink colors of the dawn.  There are boats and piratey ships floating in the distance, and the lights of Ghirardelli Square twinkle against the retreating darkness. A beautiful scene.  I almost feel like that view alone make this race worth it!

+ The course is so pretty! You start at Aquatic Park, and run up into the Marina District, along the Marina Green and Crissy Field, into the Presidio, across the Golden Gate Bridge, into the Marin Headlands, and then loop back around the same way.  For SF-ers, I think this race is enough to make you fall back in love with this City. For visitors, this race could very well make you see why people are infatuated with this City.

The Race: What Needs Improvement:
+ There needs to be more mile markers. I think I only saw a few, and it would be helpful to have more of them - this is something that can be easily fixed, without much work.

+ More water stations.  The website advertised 6 water aid stations, but I only counted 5.  I feel like an extra station would've made a big difference.  Also, some of the stations were spaced out really far apart, and at many points, I found myself really hoping for and needing water and getting somewhat irritated that there weren't more stations.  Don't be cheap, guys.  It's just water.  We need it.  But, I honestly can't count on the race organizers to add more next time, so if I run this course again, I will definitely bring my own water bottle.

+ Bottlenecks on the GG Bridge.  I read that during past races, they only had ONE side of the bridge open for runners, which just sounds pretty insane to me.  This time, they opened both sides of the bridge for runners, and even with that, there was still congestion at certain points.  It's hard to pass people, and this definitely slows you down.  I read that the SF Marathon manages to get the City to close down a few lanes of traffic, and I think it'd be a good idea to do that here too.

+ At the finish line festival, there needed to be more water.  That tank of water was out of water not long after the race.  Come on guys, you really need to step it up and give us more water here. I feel like this whole not-enough-water thing could be a potential liability (yes, I'm a law student) - I mean, you don't want people to pass out or have something worse happen to them.  Don't be cheap - get more water.  The other things being passed out - coconut water, Pop Chips, Peasant Pies, etc. - were alright.

So, I'd say that the positive aspects of this race are largely due to the scenery itself.  So props for choosing a really pretty race course.  As to the organization of the race, it could be improved so that the running experience is even better for everyone.  I'd still recommend this race to anyone looking to run a 1/2 marathon, but I'd caution them as to the above points.

This event was AWESOME! Incredible views of the bridge, delicious foods, nice space!  I really liked those little waffle-bacon-quail egg delights!  And that braised short rib was so tender and flavorful, I loved it! There was ample amounts of food at the event, the staff was gracious and helpful, and I had a really good time overall!

Thank you to Ruggy, Yelp, and Epic Roasthouse for a finely executed event!

Fifth Floor

Yelp had a week-long, 50% off happy hour last week, and Fifth Floor was one of the places on the list.  Woot! I'd always been curious about this place, and this half-off week seemed like the perfect time to check out this space.

First off, I really like the space! Swanky, yet casual! They have these fiery tiles along the walls, which contrasts with the overall dim lighting of the place.  It feels relaxed and refined at the same time.

We had a few drinks, I tried the Elderflower Fizz, the Lavender Gimlet, and the Sage Sazerac.  Not sure if all of these drinks are on the normal drink menu, I suspect some of them were specially made for the Yelp deal.  But anyway, even so, if these drinks are any indicator of how the drinks are usually made, then I'm impressed.  Strong and tasty.  The Elderflower and Lavender drinks were a bit tastier, and that sage sazerac was STRONG, like straight up alcohol. Good stuff.  I like it strong.

The nicest part of our experience though was the awesome service.  The hostess came by, and she took our drink orders.  Then, she came back around and asked us again what we wanted to drink.  When she realized that we'd already ordered and that she'd just forgotten, she comped our first round.  That was so nice of her!  Now that's how to give great service!  And of course, great service and a comped round warrants a very generous tip!  Thank you to that awesome hostess!

The place wasn't too crowded around 11pm on a Friday night, and it felt really chill.  I'd like to come back and try some of the food.  Next time!

I came here with a friend late on a Thursday night, maybe around 10pm or later, can't remember.  Anyway, we'd been drinking for a couple hours already and wanted something to eat.  Sausages seemed like a really good idea.  We walked in, and the place felt really chic/SoMA-ish, and less like the Mission, so I was a little surprised.

Anyway, I ordered the duck sausage, I think.  It was awesome.  Loved it.  And it came with a side of potato salad, which was DELICIOUS.  The wine I got was alright, but that's not what this place is known for.  It's all about the sausages and the potato salad.  I'm thinking that all the other sausages here are good too.  Recommended.

The reason this place doesn't get more stars is because of the service.  I was enjoying my meal (especially that potato salad) and because I was sitting at the bar, I was turning around to talk to my friends, so I wasn't always facing my food.  Well, the waiter/host cleared away our food and gave us our check before we were even finished! Not cool.  I had like hella potato salad left on my plate too, AND I think there was still a piece of sausage left.  I mean, maybe he thought we were done eating, or maybe he was trying to shoo was out because it was getting near closing time, but you should at least ask us before you clear away our food! I was not pleased.

Other than that, the food is great.  Oh, and there's a ScoutMob/Foursquare deal for this place, so that's cool.  Not that that was helpful in our case, because the host had so quickly taken our food away and gave us our check before I realized I should've used that deal.

But at least the food's good.

Great space, huge selection of beers, yummy food, good service.

I like this place, and hopefully I'll find my way back here in the future.  I came here with my friend on a Thursday around 5:30pm, and thankfully it was before it got crowded so we were quickly seated at the bar.  I actually didn't get any beer, so I had two glasses of wine - a white and a red, both of which I enjoyed.

We also ordered a pretzel which came with some yummy mustards, and it was freaking AWESOME.  This is something that I would not think to order myself, so I'm glad my friend decided to get it because it was really good.  Recommended.  We also got an order of large fries, which also came with mustardy dipping sauces.  Good, too.

I liked the vibe of this place and would love to come back here to try more stuff on the menu.  Just make sure you come a little earlier; I noticed that the place started to get crowded about an hour after we arrived, so best avoid that.
