Keith's BoxCar Cafe and Barbecue

Categories: Barbeque, Cafes

This is a working man's lunch place out in the industrial part of Fresno. Good, solid food like pull pork sandwich & cheeseburgers, all served up in disposable paper products. You can expect standing room only if you go between noon and one.

Keith runs a good business, providing what his customers want. He smokes the meat out back and produces good food from an infinitesimal kitchen. He is always on hand to take care of the customers. You can't get better service than that.

Should you find yourself at Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City and need a quick bite, In-N-Out is just down the street. Very convenient. It's fast food in a good location, certainly better than McDonald's. I always enjoy the house lemonade. So much better than a soda.

George's Shish Kebab

George's is old town Fresno, having been downtown for decades, before over on Ventura. The Galleria setting is very pleasant but small and crowded during lunch time. If you get there around 1:30, the pace is slower. It's fun, though, to watch the lunch crowd. You never know who you will see having lunch here.

I always have the shish kebob sandwich with pilaf, as it is always tasty, and pilaf is so buttery good. The peda bread comes from a local bakery and is always fresh. The service is fast and efficient for the large lunch crowd.

The updated decor is lovely. The service is cordial and attentive. The food is just so-so. Chips and salsa are not all that spicy. My veggie tacos were okay, but nothing special, again not spicy. The menu reminds me of Chevys.

New spot in the Mission. No sign out front except for an avant garde  taco shell. Spacious attractive room with big windows looking out on Valencia and on the great mural of Mission High School done by the All Over Coffee guy, Paul Madonna. The mural was a draw for us as we enjoy his artwork in the Sunday Chronicle.

Tacos were good as was the house margarita. I thought the margarita pretty small for the price, but, it is San Francisco. Nothing cheap here. Really enjoyed the selection of tres hot sauces. Complimentary chips and salsa were okay. Good service.

Romolo's Cannoli & Spumoni Factory

Thanks, Yelpers, for giving me the directions to this superb little ice cream shop, just off El Camino Real. We went for cannoli (the ice cream filled) but also got a milkshake to go. Had good cappucino and chocolate cone while waiting. The espresso is nice and strong and the chocolate is real.

Charming little store that looks like it hasn't changed since the 60s when it opened. Good service. My only complaint would be the very limited selection of ice creams. Don't go expecting 31 flavors. But the quality makes up for that.

Creativity Explored

The paintings in the windows, bright colors, large faces, called to us from the busy sidewalk on 16th Street in the MIssion. More paintings in the tiny gallery just inside the door kept us looking, but, oh, the huge workroom, with so many artists busy at their task of creating, drew us further into Creativity Explored. Then, the artists themselves took over, showing off their work, and pointing out wonderful pieces. What salesmen they are!

The gallery takes credit cards, therefore I was able to purchase two pieces of art. The proceeds go back to the artist who created the work, whether drawing, painting, ceramics, or even hats! What a delightful place to spend some time.

Subway Sandwiches & Salads

Good, clean Subway. I'm very particular about my sandwich fixins, wanting less, not more. The clerk here understood that and made the sandwich just the way I like it. Small town charm in a strip mall with lots of locals coming in for lunch.

Packaging Store

This small store, two doors to the south of the Fig Garden Post Office, is the place to go if you need to ship anything of any value.

The clerks are very attentive, very caring, and they understand packing and shipping. I took jewelry and antiques here to be shipped half way across the country. They were efficient, and even with the Christmas holidays looming, they got the packages there in a few days' time. Everything arrived in perfect condition, along with a check sheet of what was put in each box. Afterwards, I received copies of the signed receipts for when the package was delivered.

They will also gift wrap for you, if, like me, you are all thumbs with tape and ribbon.

The Ritz

Update - 1/7/2012
While disposing of a friend's possession after she died, I found out that The Ritz will buy silver serving pieces. My friend's ancient coffee and tea service, although not sterling, still brought $250. This is the place to go with your unwanted metals of any kind. Good service.

Took out old jewelry and after finding Fresno Coin Gallery closed on a Saturday afternoon, headed over to The Ritz.  Quick & easy and $98 richer for a few rings.  Good service.
