Noriega Teriyaki House

As their name implies, teriyaki is their specialty. That hasn't changed from my last review. I wish they bottled and sold their teriyaki sauce, which they make in-house. It's way better than the sugary crap that's sold in supermarkets and used at what seems like every other restaurant.

The fish is fresh; I could eat the sashimi and nigiri all day. I've tried some of their newer rolls and they're decent, but I prefer my sushi rolls fairly simple. I've also had the oysters here since my last review. They're pretty good and I love the sauce, which I'm guessing is ponzu, sriracha, and something else.

One note: someone complained about shanghai-type noodles in the udon, and I wanted to mention that there are many types of udon noodles which vary in size and flatness, depending on the region. I can't really comment on it any further, since I never get any hot food aside from the teriyaki here.

I visit Noriega Teriyaki as often as I can. The service is friendly and the food is a good deal: the quality is consistent, the portions are large, and the fish is always fresh.

It also has the best beef teriyaki I've had so far. The meat is sliced thinly, grilled to perfection (rare to medium rare), and the sauce isn't overpowering. The chicken teriyaki is good too. I don't think I've tried any of the cooked fish yet, since the sushi and sashimi (and, of course, the teriyaki) are always too enticing.

Rice N Spice - CLOSED

Man, I miss this place. It's been closed 7 months and I still look wistfully at the empty storefront every time I walk or drive by. The family that owned it was so friendly, and the food kept improving.

According to the owners, their landlord had refused to renew their lease and was planning to open his own restaurant in that space by September (which obviously didn't happen). They took down customers' contact info so they could notify us when they found a new space, but I haven't heard anything yet.

I love almost everything about this place. (I don't love their palak paneer, which is a bit too salty.) The dishes are reasonably priced and very flavorful, the naan is just about perfect, and the owner is incredibly gracious. I think I've found my new favorite Berkeley Indian restaurant!

This was a perfect first stop on our road trip up the coast.

We ordered half a dozen BBQ oysters, half a dozen raw, a small loaf of bread ($3), and a large bowl of clam chowder. When we first walked in, we saw a fly on the bread, so I was wary...but I bought it anyway and it was delicious. So was the clam chowder. When the oysters came, they'd given us 7 BBQ and 8 raw. While the BBQ ones were good, the raw ones were far, far better--I won't bother with the cooked ones next time!

Excellent beer and great service! Even though it was busy, our waitress was attentive, and service was quick. We couldn't make up our minds, so she made some recommendations based on our tastes and brought us samples of the Dead Guy Ale, Hazelnut Brown, Juniper Pale Ale, Mocha Porter, Mom Hefeweizen, and Shakespeare Stout. All were good; the Hazelnut Brown is sweeter than I expected, and the Juniper is very light and would be good with something spicy or grilled, but the Shakespeare Stout is a new favorite.

We went with the Dead Guy Ale, Shakespeare Stout, and a pizza (I forget which one, but it was tasty). It was a great way to spend our first evening in Portland!

We enjoyed our suite, and the location's not bad. It feels a little isolated, but it's very close to downtown. We ended up walking to Powell's and the Pearl District from here as well, which only took 20-30 minutes. We booked through Priceline's name-your-own-price and were very pleasantly surprised. You can't beat a huge suite with a queen bed and kitchenette for $52/night + taxes!

Cons: the wifi signal was weak, but we experienced the same problem later on at a Holiday Inn Express in Seattle, so maybe it's a hotel thing. The coffee packets in our room had been opened, oddly, but that wasn't an issue for us since we went out for decent coffee anyway. Do read the labels on the "complimentary" food in your room...most of it is, but they will charge you $2.50 for the bottled water. We were also told at check-in that the continental breakfast ended at 9:30, but we went downstairs at 9am and the kitchen staff were already cleaning up. When we asked about the closing time, we were brusquely informed that 9:30 was the closing time on weekends.

I wish I'd had the dinner so many other Yelpers seem to have had here. Maybe it was an off night. The prices are reasonable and I think the food may have been decent, but we so were overwhelmed by the scent of pine-sol coming off the table that we couldn't taste our food properly. The waitress was surly. Perhaps we should have ordered takeout.

I don't really have much to add. They're very fast, friendly, and affordable--make sure you ask for the Yelp discount. I left work early to come here on a weekday afternoon, and was in and out in 15 minutes. My car passed, so I didn't have to take advantage of the free re-test. My husband will probably be taking his car here this weekend, and I'll be back in two years!

Kirala Japanese Restaurant

I loved Kirala when I last ate here years ago, so I was expecting a better experience tonight. The wait was no surprise, and neither was the slow (but friendly) service, but I remember the food being better.

We started off with the stuffed bell peppers and stuffed mushrooms from the robata menu, and they were delicious. A bit pricey, though--I've had equally good robatayaki for almost a dollar less, but that was in LA, so maybe it's an unfair comparison.

Next, the sushi. We ordered three rolls: rainbow, negihama, and spicy tuna. Nothing special. The spicy tuna was a bit too mushy, and none of the fish was as fresh as it should have been.

Dessert was the best part of the meal. One order of lychee ice cream was enough for two, and it was delicious!

Overall, the quality didn't justify the cost.

I started eating here because it was right around the corner from my letterpress classes at the SF Center for the Book. I probably wouldn't have discovered it otherwise.

The food here isn't spectacular, but it's decent. I'd suggest coming here for breakfast or brunch, since the burger I tried once was just ok. I like to get their omelet plates when I'm here: it's a lot of food for under $10, and I like the potatoes they serve with it. I do wish they wouldn't butter the bread before they serve it, but I keep forgetting to ask for it dry.

A PA system would definitely help, but on the other hand, the servers are perfectly audible through the wall they share with SFCB as it is.

Nama Sushi & Teriyaki

The staff here are friendly and welcoming. Service is prompt and courteous, and the sushi is really good as well. This is the best sushi restaurant I've found in or near Walnut Creek so far.

We sat at the bar and ordered 4 rolls: Alaska, negihama, cherry blossom, and spicy tuna. I especially liked the spicy tuna--it's the spiciest one I've found so far! The negihama is a close second, but hamachi is my favorite sushi/sashimi fish, so I may be biased.

It's definitely worth the price, and we'll be returning to this restaurant!
