My last visit left me wondering if I'd ever come back again.
My husband and I visited the morning after Valentine's day for some breakfast. We were greeted by a friendly young man who led us to our table. The restaurant was half-full and the waitress seemed to be nice to everyone BUT us. I wonder if she is the same one that Katie T. wrote about in her review?
Anyway, the waitress cut me off in the middle of my order and then looked at my husband impatiently for his. It's a good thing I didn't (GET TO) order anything beyond my breakfast plate because there was something off in the taste that day. And the gravy? The magical gravy? Someone had dumped half a canister of black pepper in there.
My sister-in-law says that you're emotions can be transferred into the taste of the food you cook. Apparently the chef was in just a crabby a mood as the waitress.
I'd like to try it again because my first experience was so great but this past visit has left a sour taste in my mouth. Literally. I probably won't chance it for very long time. -

I woke up this morning and the first thing that comes out of my mouth is:
I'M HUNGRY. FEED ME.
My husband grabbed the laptop from the nightstand and I rolled my pregnant butt out of bed and into the shower. By the time I'm done getting ready, he's already got Evan's Kitchen picked out, directions pulled up on his blackberry and his meal picked out from the web menu. While he got dressed, I picked out my meal and warmed up the car.
... we're efficient.
We walked in and the place was empty save for 3-4 other patrons. We were greeted half-heartedly by a young girl and given menus. I was praying we wouldn't get her as a waitress and we didn't. Whew. Who we did have was great.
We were given menus and drink/food orders were taken. Everything came out in a timely manner:
1 OJ
1 Coffee
1 Lemonade
1 Steph's Platter
1 Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs
1 Biscuits & Gravy
Damage was $34. Not bad.
The lemonade came unsweetened, gave me a bit of a shock when I first took a sip. A packet of splenda remedied that. Like Lisa V. I didn't care for their OJ much either but it wasn't a deal breaker.
All of the dishes we picked out were smothered in gravy. I didn't realize this till all three dishes were in front of us and they all looked the same. This is not their fault, it's ours for not paying much attention. It's a good thing their gravy is scrumptious, otherwise it might have been a bit of an overkill.
My scrambled eggs came out great, bacon was a little soggy and the potatoes were seasoned well. I took a few bites off of my husbands plate and was pleased with the chicken fried steak. The biscuits & gravy are going to be must orders for us from now on.
This is a very very heavy meal ... I don't suggest going here before a full day of activities. As soon as we threw in the towel, the waitress came over and laughed at our glazed over eyes, "You two look like you're about to knock out! It's the gravy!".
We're definitely heading back here again. Maybe as soon as tomorrow morning.
... I've already got my meal picked out.

We finally went in to pick up a play pen and a car seat that my husband's boss gifted to us. I'm so glad that D's co-workers and boss recommended this place. The customer service was awesome. They walked us through the registry process and gave us a little gift bag full of goodies and coupons to take home. When we picked up the car seat, they even installed it for us for free. The guy who installed it really knew what he was doing, that seat wasn't going to budge. You can also come here to have your car seat checked if it's installed right and they'll correct it if it isn't (at a $10 fee).
Because of the stellar service we received the first time around, we decided to go back to shop around for a stroller. Their stroller selection is extensive, carrying everything from Bugaboo to Baby Jogger to Graco. We walked around clueless for a minute and was approached by a sales associate (the same one that installed our car seat). He asked if we were joggers; looking for something for the city or something all-terrain? He wanted to know what car I drove to take trunk space into consideration; did I want something with a bassinet?
All I could muster was, "Ummm ... I like purple. Purple or blue ... those are my favorite colors."
I think he sensed that both my husband and I were overwhelmed by the choices and refused to sell us a stroller after I pointed at one and said, "That one, we'll just take that one ...". He actually said, "No. I want you to make the right decision for yourself. Take your time and think about it."
How is THAT for customer service? There was no pressure to buy at all. Though there was definitely pressure to then run home and hop on the internet to do extensive research on strollers :)
We finally decided on the City Mini (Baby Jogger brand) stroller which is perfect for me since I drive a honda with little to no trunk space and I can fold it up with one hand while holding my daughter in the other. Moves quite easily as well.
I've gone back several times for various things (Baby Legs leg warmers; KidCO food grinder) and have had great help each time.
I think the only negative might be that the cashiers aren't as friendly as the associates out on the floor. But even that doesn't deter me from giving them five stars.

Dragon Palace Chinese Restaurant

The owner asked us if we were Filipino (we are) and then offered us kangkong (probably spelled wrong). I asked him what that was and he said, "Oh my! You're only a little bit Filipino. I'm going to order some for you." Turns out it was a vegetable dish (kind of looked like sauteed seaweed) that was sauteed in a little canola oil and garlic. It was pretty awesome and a great change from the normal heavy honey walnut shrimp that I order. He even shared where to buy it and then declared, "See, you're a Filipino now!". Haha.
The only downer is the high chairs. Moms and Dads, be sure to bring a high chair cover, you'll need them here. Not even several anti-bacterial wipes could take off the grime of those chairs.

... kinda like your Friday night date.
Get on it.
Let me explain:
My parents both worked and needed someone to look after my sister and I for about two hours a day before one of them would be able to pick us up.
This is where my Auntie Evelyn the librarian comes in. She was our local librarian and since my parents trusted her, they would drop us off at the library in between their shifts. Ever since then I've loved walking up and down the aisles, searching for yet another book to throw onto my never-ending stack of must-reads ... loved the story times where volunteers would read aloud to the kids ... and ultimately loved just getting lost in a story in a cozy little chair (or even just sitting on the floor in between stacks of books if all the chairs were taken up).
I would seek refuge in the library during my last year of college (had I done this right from the start of college, I may have graduated sooner!) ... it was the place where I wrote my papers, read and read and read for my psych courses and sometimes just sat and listened to music (on the good ol' ipod of course).
So when we moved to South Natomas, I was so excited to see that there was a library at walking distance from our apartment. I walked there during my pregnancy last year and almost always picked out way too many books for me to handle carrying home.
With my "nesting" instinct at full speed, I made sure to check out the children's section at the library. I loved that the children's room was equipped with listening stations and computers on small tables. After checking their website (which is awesome btw), I found that there is a toddler story telling hour. I hope to check this out once the holidays are over.
If you can't find a book there, there is a service online that allows you to have your book dropped off at this library. I use this service quite frequently and have never been disappointed. I just pick a few books online and a day or two later, they're waiting for me. There is also a few self-service kiosks that come in handy when the check-out line is too long or for when you're embarrassed that you're borrowing that trashy novel that you swore you would never pick up. :)
The library sits next to the Natomas community center as well as an awesome park (very baby friendly, handy for when your daughter decides to babble at the top of her lungs in the library). It will be a sad day when we move and are no longer a stone's throw away from this place. Here's hoping that the next library will be just as great as this one.

Magpie Caterers Market and Cafe
Categories: Caterers, American (New)
A locally grown, organic, free-range kind of change apparently.
If those things are important to you, then Magpie is definitely THE place to check out. If GOOD FOOD is important to you, then Magpie is definitely the place to check out.
We ordered the half chicken for two along with a plate of mussels. The chicken was juicy and the purple potatoes had just enough bite. The broth the mussels came in was perfect for soaking up the bread.
I would skip on the Honey Lemonade next time. It tasted like a bath product that I used to sell at L'occitane many years ago. I missed the honey note but definitely caught lavender in there somewhere. My husband enjoyed the beer recommended by the counter person ... it might have been Sudworks Marzen, can't remember.
I'm anxious to try their fig and prosciutto sandwich. Till next time, Magpie.
This place is charming. Broken in and a little worn out. Sacramento needs to keep this gem open.
I loved that I didn't have to sift through throngs of people to see a movie here. The seats we were in were comfortable enough and the ticket people were pleasant. They show independent movies and their fall line-up looks very promising. We're definitely coming back here.

You have everything that I never knew I needed.
Bear shaped bathroom sponges? $2 fake eyelashes? Tabo (shower buckets) in blue, pink AND yellow?
Yes, please!
I came away with:
- eye make-up remover wipes
- face make-up remover wipes
- clear storage for my eyeshadow pallets
- makeup bags
- mini mandolin (surprisingly sharp. Great for garlic)
- face masks (the sort that go over your mouth & nose)
- one of those rough bath wash cloths that exfoliate
... and I can't really remember what else. At $1.50 - $3.00 a pop, I wasn't expecting much quality wise but I am pleasantly surprised at how well everything works (definitely going to stock up on the eye make up remover wipes).
No worries if the line is long, the cashiers move QUICKLY and were actually having a contest (who could cut down the line the quickest) when we were there.
Date
... you probably do. Don't do it at work. Or in front of your mom.
Anyway, out of several groomers in the area, this was the only place that could fit us in today. The phone is answered with a peppy, "Doggie Style!" and made me laugh. She asked a few questions about my dog (just rescued from an animal shelter) and quoted a price over the phone. She also told me to check out their website
(http://www.doggiestyle... --- duh, why didn't I type THAT in?) for a coupon good for $5 off for new customers. Great customer service!
If you're looking for a "doggy spa/babbling brook/spoon fed foie gras" sort of experience for your Fido, this place isn't it. The salon is located in a rough neighborhood and is very utilitarian. You drop off your dog, they do their thing, they call you, you pick up. No frills in decor but the staff's attitude and care for your dog makes up for it.
I paid $25 for three shampoos, conditioning, eyes and ears checked and cleaned, nails trimmed and filed, anal glands expressed, and full body massage. I added on a flea treatment for $5 (canceled out with the coupon). This was a very competitive deal in comparison to several other places I considered.
Petey came out smelling fresh and clean though I was a bit concerned with his eagerness to run out of the salon. He either didn't like the salon or was excited to be picked up or just plain didn't like being bathed. I monitored his behavior once we were home and he was back to his normal calm and happy self. I suppose he didn't like being back in a crate after spending some time at the animal shelter.
So far, so good. Will update again after another visit next month. CASH ONLY.
