Rookies

Went there again and I'm throwing them an extra star.  Rookies is such a huge improvement over Coopers.  It was known to routinely run out of alcohol and the bar tenders would have to go to the liquor store next door to satisfy a simple customer order for a beer.  And the mens bathroom used to be a third world nightmare, with moving floors and everything.  Ok, my point is that it's MUCH better now.  The food is pretty good and it's actually turned into a decent neighborhood sports bar with a healthy customer base of locals and people staying at the hotels up Tower Road.

I think Rookies has generated more Yelp interest in it's first few weeks than it's prior owners did in the years that it was called Coopers.

If you own the place you probably shouldn't review it, I'm just sayin (and no I'm not talking about this Yelp entry for Rookies, there's another one).

One big improvement on Coopers is the beer choices on tap.  Coopers most of the time when I went there had Bud and Bud Lite.  Rookies on the other hand also has Avalanche and Samuel Adams.  That's a huge improvement.  They also have a full bar as before.   I didn't order off the menu because it was happy hour and instead had the $1 tacos.  The ground beef was way over-salted but the ingredients were fresh and the salsa (both a red and verde salsa) were surprisingly good for a sports bar.  I'm picky about salsa so that was a five-star salsa all right.  The rest was decent.  Bartenders were cool.  I don't have any complaints really and I'll definitely go back.  I'd have to try something off the actual menu and watch a game before deciding if this is a 4-star or above sports bar.

My inner first-time-reviewer-bling-whore coerced me into trying some random out of the way place this afternoon so that I could be you know, the first.  I was actually trying to find another restaurant and got tired of looking and since I was near approximately dozens of little Mexican strip mall restaurants, I decided to try this one.  Glad I did.  The carne asada was excellent as were the warm tortillas and everything else.  The salsa was plenty hot too.  I don't speak Spanish and I'm pretty sure no one there spoke English but it didn't matter because I think "Carne Asada" is a universal language.  And so is "Coke".    This location is related to the Restaurant Sanchez on Holly in Denver.

Ok, it's not much to look at from the outside but don't let that scare you off. The tap room is buried in an industrial park near Arapahoe and 55th Ave. I've worked nearby for over three years and finally stopped by the other day.  I was totally impressed with both the beer and the inside of the tap room.  There were about a dozen of their beers on tap in all different sizes and flavors.  If you're just looking to taste a few or sit there for a few hours you'll be glad you stopped in.  Once inside you have no idea you're in an ugly industrial park. Actually that adds to some of the charm I think because it's such a contrast to the outside world.  This may be my new favorite Colorado brewery which is saying a lot because our state has the best (suck it California).  Oh yeah there was food being served and I had a fish taco which was surprisingly good for such a lofi operation.  Definitely going back.

Stopped in here this weekend with my daughter during Oktoberfest and decided to try out the patio.  Glad I did because the patio was private and really cool looking.  The waitress, Danni, was probably one of the nicest people I've ever met.  Thought maybe I was on an episode of "touched by an angel" or something.   Had the beer and chicken wings and the price wasn't bad at all, especially compared to the food out on the street at Oktoberfest.  Probably a great place to have a romantic meal in the patio some night (ok maybe next summer).  The food was high quality and service excellent.  Would definitely come back here again.

I celebrated my birthday here earlier this week and I had a great time.  The food was excellent and I liked the healthy beer selection.  The appetizers, mussels and "Scottish Egg" I think it was called tasted great.  The waiter was attentive yet easy going which I liked.  And the pub chips were awesome, especially with that vinegar sauce you can pour on them if you want.  I ordered the steak frite and it was cooked just right.  We had a party of 6 and everyone enjoyed themselves.  I definitely plan on going back again.  I tried my wife's Mojito and it was perfect with the mint leaves smashed up in it just right.  This place ranks up there with Cuba Cuba for me which is saying a lot because I love that place.

I think they deserve another five stars for helping out local charity http://iempathize.org a few weeks ago with a fundraiser.  iempathize is a Boulder charity which helps fight child sex slavery in southeast Asia.

In 39 years it's one of the few churches I've been to where I wasn't bored out of my mind most of the time.  Been taking the family here for about 6 months and it's the only chuch I've been to that I actually look forward to attending.  I don't even like most Christian music but the church band at Flatirons is excellent.  The sermons are always relevant and meaningful.   And they have free bagels and coffee.  What more could you want.  They also do a lot in the community as well as sponsoring charity work in places like Afghanistan.  If you've given up on church in the past and are thinking about trying it out again this would be an excellent one to check out.  They have a ton of services because they've grown so much but whichever one you attend, plan on showing up about 15min early because it gets packed.  Oh yeah and this is a bible-based Christian church in case anyone is wondering.

Ate here again today.  Had the tacos de carnitas which is only available Fridays and weekends.  Corn tortilla smothered in grilled onions with fresh avocado and pico de gallo.  Also the free chips and salsa are excellent.

Definitely plan on eating here again.  Would have never thought to eat here but read some yelp reviews and figured I'd take my Dad since he was visiting from out of town.  Food and service were excellent.  Doesn't look like much from the outside but decorated nicely on the inside.  I had a pork dish, forgot what it was called but ate everything on my plate it was so good.  The $3 happy hour margarita didn't hurt either.

My family took me here for Father's Day this year and I really enjoyed myself.  Had the sampler and wow they definitely have a various assortment of beers here.  Last time I had a sampler this varied was at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico a few years back.  I actually wasn't able to finish the whole thing.  The food was good too.  I thought I'd like Oskar Blues Brewery in Lyons better than this place but of the two, Tommy Knocker is my favorite.

Pep Boys Automotive Supercenters

I've been here 3 times in the past year for various automotive work and I gave Pep Boys an extra star for being open on the weekends.  Good luck getting any work done elsewhere on a Sunday.  The prices are competitive and I haven't had any issues with the work that's been done (brake jobs and tires mostly for Honda and Ford). Be prepared though for a long wait.  This isn't Jiffy Lube.  If you drop your car off first thing Saturday morning don't expect it back until at least 3 or 4PM as they get pretty busy on the weekends. One of my pet peeves is the bankers hours kept by most automotive repair shops so I really appreciate that Pep Boys is open on the weekends. They've saved me a few times due to that.

Other than having to suffer through a looooong recap of a raspy voiced nanny's adventures sitting at the next table, I had a good experience at the Cherry Cricket the other day.  Had the shrimp po'boy and it was good.  Same goes for the service.  Tried one of Wynkoop's beers.  Forgot which one it was but there were letters in the name.  They have a huge patio and it's a great place to sit outdoors when it's nice.
