I'm kind of embarrassed to admit, I dig this spot even though it is a chain. However, it's a very small (~10 restaurants and growing) chain with organic fast food, baby! I know, it's a bit of an oxymoron, but if you can bury away your inner ideologue, you're going to totally enjoy it. 100% organic, grass-fed beef burgers make eating 'em just all that much less guilt-ridden. Plus, they have some killer vegan and veggie burger options and olive oil-fried french fries. Add on super friendly kids working there and a clean, well-designed aesthetic and you've got a combo for one hell of a cool burger joint. Check 'em out.

My friend called this 'the best falafel in town' and he was totally right.  The falafel sandwich was outstanding.  Fresh, crusty pita bread, cilantro-heavy falafel and the tastiest hummus around.

The babaganoush is not to be missed, either.  Creamy and without a ton of eggplant skins made it just right.  And as other reviewers have noted - the pita comes fresh made and straight out of the oven.  And they're not shy to bring you more.  Awesome.

Outa the blue, Thriftway adds an ENTIRE ROW of decent organic products.  Wow, that just shot them up two stars in my book.  That and I live three blocks from here.  Location, people.  It helps.

Some dark forces make us suffer with this being the only supermarket in the neighborhood.  Use only as a last resort.  And for ice cream (which always tends to be on sale).

This is one of those stores that everyone groans and rolls their eyes when they talk about it.  "Unfortunately, I had to go to Thriftway and of course they didn't have it.  Plus, I had to walk through a cloud of smoke to get into the store."  Dirty, ugly, and poorly stocked.

If you're in need of some last-minute items for dinner, I'd highly recommend checking out Cousin's at 5th & Berks instead.

Outa nowhere seemingly comes this new joint Kung-fu Necktie. Odd name, yes. But man what an amazing place!  You got kung-fu on TV, dark stained wood, a long, beautiful bar and an absolutely amazing rehab of the old 'Penalty Box Bar' under the El.

This is sure to be a new classic Kenso bar.  Just steps from the Girard El stop, and a new addition to the Johnny Brenda's sphere of influence (their design aesthetic certainly borrows a few from JB's).

One of the best features (aside from PNBLL!!!) is the long pub-style heavy wood table with candelabra.  We fit easily 10 friends around the table last night and had an awesome time.

Oh, and they have great drinks and a friendly bar staff.  I can see this is the beginning of a long relationship.

Real estate as good as it gets.

I just bought my house through Jeff Carpineta at Solo.  He is a rock star realtor, especially if you're looking for property in Fishtown, Northern Liberties or the like.  He's always on top of the market, and he's very patient and intuitive about what will fit you.  Truthfully, by far the most knowledgeable, professional and all-around awesome realtor in the area.

I'm writing this review for one big reason:  my best friend and I spent about two hours here the other night drinking whiskey and playing the best arcade game in the history of the universe:  Big Buck Hunter!

That's right, not only do they have Big Buck Hunter, but they've also got a Wii for public play.  I don't know of any other bar in Philly that has BBH, and since this is one block from my best friends house, I'm sure we'll be there more than once again.

The crowd was a great mix of hipsters, neighborhood folks and young people That night they had horrible taste in jukebox selections - but I'm a music snob.  We did get a couple Pixies tunes in there, so it wasn't all bad, but luckily I was carried away with kicking ass at killin' digital deer.  Hellz yeah!

Always well-curated shows.  The hippest, killer opening parties.  And a fantastic selection of affordable, locally made arts.  Bambi is one of the best galleries north of Old City.

They've shown a wide range of artists from the illustrations of Mark Mothersbaugh (of Devo) to video artist David Kessler.

The owner, Candace is kind of a local celebrity.  She's super engaging and friendly.  Not only does she love art, but she participates whole-heartedly in the artist community.  She's a pioneer in opening the first gallery on the Frankford "Arts Corridor".  Definitely make this place one stop while gallery hopping next First Friday.

One of the more beautiful independent book stores in the area.  I love the way the shelves are such clean lines, with books displayed so elegantly and well chosen.  It's like an art gallery, an homage to the book.

But they also host live music!  Plenty of avant-garde and folk shows going on throughout the month.  I've been to a couple here (the primary reason I even set foot in there to begin with) and it's a fantastic space for vibing out to some weirdo tunes while reading up on, say, South East Asian art.  Can someone say Beatnick?

Marino's Auto Repair

Marino's is owned by a guy named Dave.  You might have heard of him, a few years ago he staged a protest against Sunoco's gas price hike by giving gas away for free at his old Sunoco station.

Dave hired me to shoot some documentary footage about his story, and we became pals.  After closing his gas station (the subject of the documentary), he re-opened the repair shop here.

I still go to Marino's now, even though they're pretty far from my house.  Not only because of Dave, but because the guys that work there are total professionals.  Anthony is always smart, very nice and accommodating.  He's often fixed my car troubles with very cheap solutions saving me tons of money and he always does a great job.

You won't regret taking your car to these fellas.  Trust me.

Thrift Fair Stores Inc

As far as area thrift stores go, this one rates decently.  The pickings tend to be pretty slim, but you'll occasionally score a wee gem.  It gets picked over by Fishtown/NoLibs hipsters and most the stuff they get donated is relative crap, but every once in a while we find great stuff.  A big downer for a thrift store, however: no dressing rooms.

That being said, the place is HUGE.  And CHEAP.  And any hard-core thrifter knows that those things trump most all else.

Other things:  not much furniture, lots of random housewares, no records or electronics worth noting.
