Erik Nye the Tree Guy

Category: Landscaping
Neighborhood: Downtown

If I could give Erik six stars, I would. We called Erik after reading some glowing reviews both here and on the West Seattle Blog, and I'm sure glad we did. He was prompt, polite, and had a really great confidence and sense of humor about his job (which I found instantly endearing).

We made an appointment for a consultation at 2:30 on a friday to trim a magnolia and an alder that were touching our roofline. 4 hours later, we were reveling in the light filled yard that Erik and his crew had created for us. It was amazing! Erik even threw in stump removal for an extra $50. BONUS!

And after all the trees were trimmed up, they cleaned up all the leaves, and then proceeded to help my husband clean the moss off our roof and helped clean our gutters (which was great to do the day before a big rain). All of this at a price that was well below what I expected.

Plus, Erik's got a pretty cool neon green dirt bike that he let my husband take a couple of laps around the neighborhood on.

Papas con rajas: potatoes, poblano chiles and corn sauteed together with a delicious cream sauce, served with tortillas. Horchata. Delicious. Just don't come on a hot day, ok?

Jen C is fabulous! I will never get a haircut anywhere else again. She can just intuitively cut my hair perfectly- she has even made it look longer after a cut than it did before!

UPDATE: Changing this review to 5 stars  due to great customer service and a great haircut. 2 weeks after our HORRENDOUS experience there, and after this review, the manager of the salon called and spoke with me about my experience.  She never made me feel like my impression was incorrect, didn't try and make any excuses, and hoped that both my husband and I would come in for complimentary cuts with either of their top stylists. I was really impressed that they cared about their clients.

So though I have not yet rec'd my free cut, my husband had his last week with Jennifer C and was VERY happy with the result. He said she was kind, thorough and attentive- plus she grew up in the same random California town as he did. Weird! Needless to say, he's sticking with her. I can't wait to get my cut with her too!

Just goes to show two things: Yelp REALLY rules, and that first impressions are not always accurate ones.

MEH. Just got our hairs cut here and all I can say is BLAH. My husband has hard-to-cut hair- lots of cowlicks- and was looking for a good and experienced stylist and since vain in belltown got so many good reviews, we thought we'd try the one right down the street from us. His stylist (who is supposed to be so experienced) spent like maybe 10 minutes cutting his hair. We've already noticed some uneven cutting, and we just got home. My stylist kept me waiting for like 1/2 hour and then really didn't do much talking- I was very uncomfortable. She also cut this weird bang thing into my hair and now I'm going to have hair in my eyes for the next few months. I tried to be clear on what I wanted, but it was like she kept needing more direction. Maybe I'm not so good at articulating what I want, but we're definitely not returning here, even for our complimentary trim (which was never even mentioned by the way). The one star is for my stylist, who was at least thorough and complete about my haircut, and the other star is for the cute dog running around the shop.

A freaking gem of a park if there ever was one. I took my special charge Sofa for a sunset walk here. We were treated to a magnificent time- complete with scenic vistas, roomy trails, and the prettiest stretch of coast I've seen in city.

That night, as the crimson sun slipped behind the Olympics, casting it's pink glow across the horizon and reflecting opalescence on the water I decided to try and convince my husband to move to West Seattle, just to be closer to this place.

Plus, those stairs back up from the beach are a f**king ass kicker.

Yum. This burger beats Red Mill's ass to a pulp. Thick, juicy burgers cooked to order (even slightly pink in the middle!) make me very happy. The #11 + bacon (mama lils peppers, smoked cheddar, chipotle mayo), made me drunk with glee. Still not the elusive "perfect burger", but the price, location, and friendly service ensure our return. We are hoping to be living just around the corner, which would be great, because the parking lot is a freaking nightmare.

Wow- thoroughly impressed with this pet store. I am currently dog sitting for a big fella with a sensitive stomach, and his prescription food had yet to arrive from Mr UPS. So I chanced in here after yoga and was blown away by how cool this place was. The clerk (possibly the owner?) knew so much about her products and deftly suggested a suitable match, and even tried to just give me a free sample! I decided to go ahead and buy a small bag, but she did convince me to take a sample of an organic cat food for my little kittoons...

King's Baguettes - CLOSED

Ok- so this review is based purely on bread, and not on their Banh Mi.  I needed 20 baguettes for a catering job today and was trying some of the fancy frenchy places... the verdict: too hard and too expensive. I needed pillowy french bread goodness on a budget.

The most velvety- soft -yet -crispy- but- not- too- much- that- it -tears -up- the- mouth baguettes in the world are made here. They were perfect. The service was super friendly, and even though I had called in advance and they didn't have my order handy, accommodating such a large purchase was no problem at all. Best part, though? $1.25/ loaf. Shazam!

Also, their other baked items, like tarts and cakes looked fab. I'm sure I'll be back to try those, too.

Skillet

Hooray for no lines @ Skillet!

Well, we were the last people there @ 2pm, but they were cool enough to not turn us away.

I've been wanting to try their burger since I read about it- it sounds conspicuously similar to my favorite burger in the universe: the Father's Office burger.http://www.yelp.com/us... So of course I had to order one. Medium rare. And a lemongrass pulled pork sammie. And poutine. (This was our first meal of the day, and we were huuungryyy!)

Results: Poutine- quite possibly the greatest food to come from the great white north. Ree-dick. Pulled pork- really tasty. My husband loved it, and he's not into pulled pork so much. And the burger. Slightly- SLIGHTLY disappointing. I needed more bacon jam. And my burger was medium to well done.  But still juicy and very delicious. And those skillet peeps rocked the fries. I'll be back often. I think I need to give that burger another chance.

This review is mainly for the services of Dr. Marcie Hamrick, though I've heard good things about the other practitioners here as well. Dr Hamrick, a naturopathic MD, was referred to my by a friend after I was suffering from a strange 3 month long illness (subacute thyroiditis). After visiting my previous doctor 3 times and being told that my abnormal thyroid condition would "go away" and that there was "nothing to be done" about it, I just needed a second opinion.

Dr Hamrick was kind, easy to talk to, and took a mind/body approach to my condition, determining whether it could have been stress induced, or an autoimmune issue, or possibly my body just being "out of whack". After running a complete blood panel, I was informed of my severe vitamin D deficiency, and told honestly that I needed to get my health back in focus- essentially to get in shape. I had never had a doctor tell me this before, honestly. It was refreshing and sobering. After exercising regularly and taking my double dose vitamin D supplement, my thyroid issue and frustrating pain went away, and I started to notice my body getting stronger and healthier.

Dr Hamrick also has been amazing in dealing with a major health issue that has come up with my husband, approaching his treatment preventatively rather than harmfully invasive.

I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a kind, patient, and caring physician who won't just prescribe antibiotics when you have a sinus infection. Unfortunately, it seems she's not taking anymore clients, but the other MD's at One Sky have this shared vision.
