I did not try any other shrimp trucks on our visit to Oahu, as I was THOROUGHLY SATISFIED with the shrimp from here. We got the garlic shrimp plate, medium spicy, and it was delicious! Juicy, succulent shrimp, covered in a creamy, garlicky butter sauce that we spooned over our rice and were licking off our fingers. The garlic bread was also insanely good. It was the perfect thing after a long day of coffee/chocolate tasting.

We came here with a few local friends who swore it was their favorite restaurant in all of Hawaii. The appetizers were intriguing, but our entrees were enormous -- I had asked our server if we'd be able to share, and she insisted we would need our own. The garlic ahi had great flavor but was terribly dry. The shrimp tempura wasn't very crispy, and the sashimi was so thickly sliced I had a hard time eating it easily. And when we were finished I was nearly admonished by our server for leaving food on my plate.

I'm glad it wasn't *very* expensive, but I definitely won't be back on our next visit -- not that it was godawful, but I was looking forward to more classic Japanese or more true Hawaiian. I wasn't really digging their take on the middle ground in between the two cuisines.

This review is mainly for the services of Dr. Marcie Hamrick, though I've heard good things about the other practitioners here as well. Dr Hamrick, a naturopathic MD, was referred to my by a friend after I was suffering from a strange 3 month long illness (subacute thyroiditis). After visiting my previous doctor 3 times and being told that my abnormal thyroid condition would "go away" and that there was "nothing to be done" about it, I just needed a second opinion.

Dr Hamrick was kind, easy to talk to, and took a mind/body approach to my condition, determining whether it could have been stress induced, or an autoimmune issue, or possibly my body just being "out of whack". After running a complete blood panel, I was informed of my severe vitamin D deficiency, and told honestly that I needed to get my health back in focus- essentially to get in shape. I had never had a doctor tell me this before, honestly. It was refreshing and sobering. After exercising regularly and taking my double dose vitamin D supplement, my thyroid issue and frustrating pain went away, and I started to notice my body getting stronger and healthier.

Dr Hamrick also has been amazing in dealing with a major health issue that has come up with my husband, approaching his treatment preventatively rather than harmfully invasive.

I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a kind, patient, and caring physician who won't just prescribe antibiotics when you have a sinus infection. Unfortunately, it seems she's not taking anymore clients, but the other MD's at One Sky have this shared vision.

I feel really bad waiting as long as I have to write this review. Dallas and his team of flooring wizards rocked the shizz out of our floors, and at a price I was shocked by.

Our floors were bad. I mean terrible. It looked as if some previous DIY-idiot had spray painted, and plastered and laid tile all over the original fir floors in our house. Dallas swooped in and told us he'd be able to fix them- and not only did he do that, but managed to get them done on our super-tight schedule during the December 2008 freeze when we couldn't even get to our house ourselves due to impassable roads. And our floors are GORGEOUS now. Don't even bother calling anyone else, ok?

I have it on good authority that Marjorie will soon be re-opening on Capitol Hill (14th and Union, to be precise). Joy! Rapture! I was recently finding myself stroking the Marjorie business card longingly, dreaming of canard confit and the world's best Negroni... Soon to be a part of my life once more!!

I hesitated even writing this review. Kinda wanted to keep this one to myself, hoarding the loveliness like a child with a new toy. Then I saw that there were already 45, so I thought I'd jump into the fray.

I think that this meal was in the top 2 of my best restaurant meals ever.  Seriously. We called up at 6 on a Friday night to see if we could be seated promptly at 6:30. They were totally accommodating, and didn't even hassle us when we were 15 mins late (belltown parking blows donkey dick).

The place is adorable! Quaint little patio for outside summer dining, tiny little packed bar, tiny little dining area. The room is lined with wooden benches topped with comfy and brigthly colored silk pillows.  The ceiling is also covered in silk, in a patchwork of jewel toned panels. Great music was playing- an eclectic mix of groove, jazz, classical.... I don't know, but it worked. The atmosphere is lovely.

Our super- friendly server arrived and got us started on some wine-  he recommended a delicious Oregon Pinot that we all really enjoyed. The wine list was pretty interesting- not TOO pricey. We had an appetizer of steamed mussels in vermouth. Shazam! so freaking good! The mussels were plump and tender, and the vermouth added a lovely herbaceousness to the broth. The three of us killed it quick.

I had, as my entree, the duck confit, which was really quite spectacular. I haven't met a canard confit I haven't enjoyed, but there was something exceptional about this one. Was it the faintly cinnamon or cardamom (or both) aroma to the crispy skin? Yes. Was it the juicy and tender interior which required no knife to enjoy? Yes. The sides were perfectly executed as well- simple roasted fingerling potatoes and lightly wilted baby spinach.

As I sampled my husband's amazing pork and our friend's sunchoke soup and array of sides, it became really apparent. This food is made with love. No fancy pretense, no foams, or molecular gastronomy bullshit. Great ingredients made with great care and intent. My kinda joint indeed.

One more nod to the crack chicken. And the crab (crack) fried rice.
And the atmosphere is lovely. But I've gotta be honest: the burly white "bouncer" guy who is always there seems really unfriendly to me. It's probably just my perception, but I'll admit it's a deterrent. But nonetheless, still one of my favorite affordable yet fancy places to dine in town.

I'd really say 3.5, but I'm rounding up because they are really nice here.
I've ordered takeout from here 3 times now, and I'd say it's pretty darn good-- not the best Thai I've ever had, but acceptable, and more friendly and affordable than my former standard, Buddha Ruksa.

The tom yum soup was really disappointing (not near fragrant enough), but the pad thai, crispy garlic chicken, and spicy green beans are really tasty. Great for a night in when you are craving Thai food.

If I could give Erik six stars, I would. We called Erik after reading some glowing reviews both here and on the West Seattle Blog, and I'm sure glad we did. He was prompt, polite, and had a really great confidence and sense of humor about his job (which I found instantly endearing).

We made an appointment for a consultation at 2:30 on a friday to trim a magnolia and an alder that were touching our roofline. 4 hours later, we were reveling in the light filled yard that Erik and his crew had created for us. It was amazing! Erik even threw in stump removal for an extra $50. BONUS!

And after all the trees were trimmed up, they cleaned up all the leaves, and then proceeded to help my husband clean the moss off our roof and helped clean our gutters (which was great to do the day before a big rain). All of this at a price that was well below what I expected.

Plus, Erik's got a pretty cool neon green dirt bike that he let my husband take a couple of laps around the neighborhood on.

Papas con rajas: potatoes, poblano chiles and corn sauteed together with a delicious cream sauce, served with tortillas. Horchata. Delicious. Just don't come on a hot day, ok?
