Ciders, meads, belgian beers, knowledgeable staffs, and tastings on Wednesdays. Sign up for their mailing list.

Smarty Pants

Archetypal georgetown - punk waitresses, small selection of good beers, and really good (but not particularly) food.

I've been repeatedly scared away by massive crowds on the weekends, but I love the days when I am able to stop in for a sandwich and a beer on a weekday. When I bring one or two friends, they really enjoy Smarty Pants, but dropping in with a half dozen people from the office doesn't work so well.

Attic Alehouse & Eatery

Neighborhood: Madison Park

This place has a nice, comfortable pub-like atmosphere. I can drive down after work, grab a pint, and sit in a corner in a book. It's not sparse enough to give the "failing business" vibe or crowded with hipsters.

The Attic is a great place to meet a few friends for dinner and drinks, with a short-but-decent drink list and fantastic burgers - made with grain-fed free-range beef.

It's better than the cafeteria. The internet ordering is very, very convenient. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother - this is an OK cafe and bakery, not a GREAT cafe and bakery.

Calamity Jane's

Neighborhood: Georgetown

Finally gave Calamity Jane's a try the other night, after reading the two one-star reviews from Alison and David R. Most of what they complained about.

" A friend was deeply offended when he asked if they planned on getting a TV or something else for entertainment while waiting for drinks and food during happy hour, and he was told to go to Queen Anne or some other neighborhood because he obviously didn't belong in Georgetown." -- that, right there, won my love for Calamity Jane's.

We went there on a weeknight, to a void crowds. Prepared for a long wait for good food, we brought books - but we were surprised, as the solo bartender/waiter managed to get our food out to us very quickly.

Stellar Pizza & Ale

Categories: Pizza, Bars
Neighborhood: Georgetown

Yum, with a side of yum, and yum on top. This is the best pizza I've found in Seattle. Stellar has become our default source of take-out pizza.

The sauce is spicy and flavorful and the beer selection is halfway decent. I've heard good things about the pasta and salad - but why try, when the greasy pizza is this delicious?

Like most  of the hip, vaguely-punk Georgetown places, Stellar gets obscenely crowded on the weekends. Dine in on a weeknight or get your pie for take out.

Collins Pub

Too-loud music and lousy service. It's difficult to have a conversation with your friends in this atmosphere, but you still keep trying as you wait FOREVER for service.

The menu SEEMED to have a great beer selection - until you actually tried to order. Eventually, our waitress took pity on us and agreed to mark up one of the paper menus with the few beers that they DID have in stock.

Food was adequate pub grub, but nothing special. I see no reason to return.

Borracchini's Bakery

Good bakery. Every time I need a cake and we don't have time to make one ourselves, I order it from Borracchini's - and always gate the Bavarian Cream frosting. If you don't think you like frosting on cake, that's probably because you have never had GOOD frosting.

The marketplace usually has good staples, and the frozen pastas are great for emergency meals.

MacPherson's Fruit & Produce

Category: Fruits & Veggies
Neighborhood: Beacon Hill

MacPherson's makes living on Beacon Hill much more affordable - we get half of our groceries from here, for less than a quarter of our grocery budget.

If you are at all capable of choosing your produce, you can consistently find good food for good prices here. Beyond the usual produce, there's usually some chorizo, cojito, breads, or other random things tucked in corners of the store.

The parking lot is small, so on  at especially busy times (noonish on weekends), I usually end up parking on 15th and walking less than a block.

Duck Island Ale House

Neighborhood: Green Lake

Comfortable and relaxed, Duck Island has an impressive array of Beers on tap - far more than you would expect for a tiny bar on the side of 99. You can also order food from Beth's next door, including the legendary 6 or 12 egg omelettes.
