Joe's Cellar

 Update - 11/3/2009
Since we moved to the neighborhood, this has been our favorite watering hole. But what we didn't realize was how good the breakfast is!. Over the last few weeks we've tried a few of the scrambles and the pancakes. All were delicious, all were made to order. Good ingredients and friendly staff. Just as good as Stepping Stone, if not a little better.

I'm pretty much going to live here now.

I adore Joe's Cellar! Service is always prompt, drinks are strong, clientele mostly lacking in pretense. Good liquor selection and bare bones bar food for 2:00 am snacking.

Dropped in here during the Green Line celebrations. Had a wonderful tasty Mexican lunch with reasonable portions for 5.50. Great service, super cheerful staff and really inexpensive. They have what you expect and it tastes good!

Didn't manage to hit the club/bar, just made it to the deli. But my goodness, this place has some wonderful things. Great selection of meat, breads, pickled things (like baby eggplant! OMG) and Eastern European Jaffa Cakes. For 'mericans these are little cakes with jam on top, covered with chocolate. They are delicious.

The proprietor drug me into the club/function room to have a look around too. It was beautiful. And the cinnamon raisin bun she have me? Delicious. It's right off the Lents Green Line stop, so it's also pretty accessible. Well worth a stop in.

Great jukebox! Rivals the Rialto in its glory days (before it became a Serious Pool Place and redecorated.) We had great service, quick and friendly staff and strong drinks. The bar munchies are glorious artery clogging things. Just had the cheese fries this time but I seem to be in this part of town a lot, so no doubt I'll have a chance to try more.

Doggie friendly too!

The pies are fantastic, tasty and filling. Come October they will be the perfect quick lunch food to warm your belly. Everything is well priced (about 3 dollars for something that will keep the hunger at bay!) I haven't tried the sweet pies yet, which are more like tarts, but the cinnamon chocolate is calling to me!

This went from a 5 star review to a 1 star in a month. Previously I had my eyebrows and lip waxed here and was very pleased with the experience. This last time I ended up with uneven eyebrows and a left eyebrow that's 1/4 of an inch shorter than the right. Not to mention a lot thinner. I'm very disappointed. They're completely uneven and look silly. I'm just fortunate I'm blonde and have bangs. I've requested a refund, we'll find out how good their policy is.

Updated: Haven't had the chance yet! So far a very good refund policy, as stated they refunded me immediately for the full cost of the treatment. Adjusted rating since this appears to be a priority. Show owner comment »

The service at 2:00am is as good as can be expected for a place full of drunks, but the kabobs are so worth it. Juicy, delicious, huge, almost a perfect meal. I love you Abdul's!

Since I returned from Limeyland I've found the one thing Portland is really missing is a decent kabob.

I've found it.

The lamb is roasting on the big old rotisserie and shaved off to order. The grilled chicken Shish kabob was as good as I ever had in Manchester. Plus, though this isn't an English thing, the hummous was wonderfully creamy. Oh! And not to forget the excellent chili sauce. This place is a godsend.

Been going to various Rich's to buy special Nat Sherman's since I was old enough to have valid ID. The one downtown has a much better cigarette selection, but this little one on 23rd will do for a quick fix. Plus, I can grab all the trashy magazines I miss from Limeyland for a lazy afternoon reading outside. Really now, what more do you want?

(Oh, I know, I want them to carry Private Eye! That for a 5th star!)

I started volunteering here back in June, it's tough to get shifts! That's how popular it is. I did it for a couple reasons: 1. I'm an IT person but my background is primarily in Windows. 2. I believe in civic duty! And so far the process has been very rewarding and I've learned a lot.

It's a little disorganized but the volunteers are pretty friendly and more than willing to help. The thrift store has some great stuff in it for way cheaper than the big stores. And the recycling program is fantastic. My employer donates a lot to FreeGeek and I have to put it all together. We have yet to have any of our random stuff get turned away.

A great organization doing great things.
