San Francisco Meats & Delicatessen

Categories: Meat Shops, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Ingleside

5 star rating
 Update - 11/6/2009
Joe and Matt have had the store for over a year now and I think they really deserve kudos.  Rather than starting with a bang and sputtering out, the store has just got better.  They add improvements all the time like the meat roaster, the fish counter, new shelves here and better signs there.

My husband and I buy meat here several times a week.  It's always high quality, consistent, and a pleasure to buy.

I have a frequent routine.  On my way home from work, I stop by SF Meats and see what's good.  Then I pick whatever the dish for the night will be and I usually grab something for tomorrow as well.  Next, I walk down a block to the Fruit Barn and get fresh produce, herbs or other groceries.  We eat like kings!  I love spending my grocery money on small businesses who care about what they sell!

Thumbs up to Matt and Joe!  SF Meats is an asset to this neighborhood!

San Francisco Meats just opened up on Ocean Avenue this week and I can hardly contain my excitement!  Even though I'd eaten lunch already, I HAD to check them out.  So I went inside and I was greeted by "Joe," the extremely enthusiastic owner of this brand new business.

Half deli and half butcher shop, they boasted a fairly reasonable meat selection.  I'll be back for the thick cut bacon.

I ordered a soprosetta salami sandwich with cheese.  It came with a free soda and bag of chips.  There are at least two inches of meat on this sammie and the whole thing is so big that I can't get my mouth around it!  $5.95 is a very reasonable price for a sandwich of this size and quality--with chips and a soda!

From what I can tell, this is a first-rate operation and I am thrilled to have them in the neighborhood.  Best of luck to Joe and the rest of his crew!  I'll be back!

Why the hell can't I find my review for Retox?  I'm sure I reviewed them years ago!

Retox is an awesome little watering hole in the dogpatch.  My buddy, Mike Broadus bought it when it was the old Sub Lounge.  That place was a dump.  Broadus lovingly redid everything.

The drinks are strong and cheap.  The music is great and often live.  Parking is easy and it's right by the T.

I've thrown parties there and they are very reasonable to work with!

What's not to love?

Tax Ninja

Oh boy did I have a tax mess!  The IRS and FTB were climbing all OVER my a$$!  I thought I owed them several grand (...and I'm not saying how many).  I walked into Matt's office with a pile of paper work, ready for really bad news.

Guess what.  They OWE me.  Matt found mad deductions and got me all straightened out.  He even sent me to the IRS in person where I could work out in a few hours what would take months by mail.  Did you know that they have a walk-in desk downtown?

I will NEVER touch my own taxes again.  Why should I?  For the few hundred dollars he charged me, he saved me (even made me) thousands.

Yep, it's true.  He IS  ninja.

On a side note, I've known Matt for years.  I always love when my Burner friends are totally brilliant and competent business people.  Maybe I need to start a list of burner-owned businesses!

Fastsigns

I suppose the word fast is relative.  I mean yes, if you are speaking in geological terms, I suppose these guys were fast.  However, I'm speaking in business terms.

We put in an order on August 2.  The contract said 5-10 days.  On the 18th, we still did not have our signs.  They were slow to respond to email and kept promissing "some time this week".

It wasn't until I spoke with the owner that miraculously they were "ready for pick up".  This was immediately after Rachel, the sales associate told us they wouldn't be ready for a couple more days.

When we finally did get them, the holes were drilled more than 1/2 inch off and there was cracking around where the holes were drilled.

For the lackadaisical service and shoddy workmanship, they get one star.

Wow!  I mean Wow!  Jaretta cut my hair this afternoon and I posted a photo on facebook and I already have NINETEEN compliments raving about how great it looks!  Here's a link: http://twitpic.com/dx9a0

So here's the low-down. I have very curly hair and have spent my life avoiding salons.  Most stylists have no idea what to do with curls.  Do you know how many times I've had my hair cut badly, then they've tried to over-compensate with tons of product, and then tried to explain that "the wet look is in"?  Um, gross.  So I've just stayed away.

Finally, Finally, somebody knows what they are doing.

Jaretta is amazing with color and amazing with cuts.  Plus, she's a doll.

The whole salon is awesome.  I have known the owner, Marie, through friends of mine for many years.  She's lovely and charming.

I cannot rave enough about Madu Salon.  (Have you noticed?)

Wow! I've been working in the neighborhood for 3 years and just noticed this place.  Last time I had a big salad which was actually really good.  This time, I got the falafel pita with roasted veggies.  It's really tasty and absolutely huge!  It's quite a great meal for $6.  The staff was super friendly and the food came up quickly.   I will be sure to work them into the rotation!

UPDATE!  These THIEVES rounded the tip up for us, too!  We wrote in $33.50 and they charge my husband's card $35.  There are several other reviewers who made this complaint.  Steer clear!  They habitually rip their customers off by a buck or two!

If grease-saturated dishes made with freezer-burnt meat and produce that was fresh in the 80's is your thing, the El Patio is your place.

Decorated with cob-web covered plastic plants, the ambiance here screams trailer park garage sale.

And speaking of screaming, prepare to get a little horse afterward, since the music in here is so loud that you have to yell to have a conversation.  At 6pm, the volume was louder than it would be at a night club.

You'd better appreciate all that because you're going to endure it for a while before your "food" arrives.  Cooking and service seem like an after-thought.  Changing channels on the TV and singing along to the blasting jukebox are clearly the priorities.

At least they're cheap but in the Mission, you can do MUCH better.

Ideal Bar & Grill

This place is complete crap.  Yuck!

I expect even the worst beach bars to serve a decent margarita but it was one of the worst I'd ever had.  I only drank two sips.

My husband ordered the potato skins.  They were undercooked and cold in the middle.  My salad was unmemorable and the service was painfully slow.

The restaurant is absolutely huge however the ladies room is only a twosie -and so small that if you wait in line, the door will smack you in the @ss.  To add insult to injury, it was filthy.

The only thing going for this place is the location.  The bowling alley seriously has better food.

There are days when nothing is going to hit the spot like the Paragon grilled cheese sammie.  Today, my best friend and I agreed that indeed, it deserves poetry.

ODE TO THE PARAGON GRILLED CHEESE SAMMICH

Ode to thee o' cheesy one.
Thy layers are such gooey fun.
Encrusted in Parmesan-fried toast,
You're why I write this humble post.
With a choice of turkey or smoked bacon,
My pallet will not be forsaken.
I love to dip your cheesy goop
In warm and tasty tomato soup.
You rule as comfort food in SOMA
And always worth that sleepy food coma.

They make an amazing grilled cheese sandwich!  I've had good experiences here.  It's pricey but I've always felt that the food and service lived up to the price.

Sunday Streets

What a wonderful, community-centric program.  I hope this lasts.  On Sunday, we walked up and down Valencia, talking to people and watching the CORA roller skaters perform their tribute to Thriller.  Just as it was ending the SF Symphony in Dolores Park was beginning.

I especially liked that unlike a street fair, this wasn't focused on vendors.  There were a few people pedaling this and that, but I also saw food and drinks being given away to passers-by for free.

Wow!  Just Wow!  Go San Francisco!

I bought a brand new pair of roller skates so I'm ready with wheels for the next Sunday Streets, August 9th on Great Highway!
