I will never, EVER, get waxed, then wait 2-3 months to schedule another Brazilian waxing. EVER.
I have learned this harsh lesson. Twice! There are all kinds of hurt in this world. Heartache. Food poisoning. Childbirth. But deforesting the Amazonian rain forest after letting it grow rampant for weeks on end is a new kind of pain that you shouldn't have to experience because it's easily preventable.
This is where Adrienne comes in. Maria was out of the country when I made an appointment, but she was just as good as Maria. Adrienne was super thorough in everything she did. She would be someone I would recommend to a first-timer, as she has that type of personality where conversation comes easily, and she'll make you feel at ease with her jokes and stories. Adrienne comes to Last Tangle from Andre Chreky, where she was for about 3 years, but she's been waxing for much longer than that. Along with the deforestation, I also got a half-leg wax, and was out within 45 minutes. Ask Adrienne for her card when you have a service. Last Tangle has an awesome referral system. If you write your name on the back of the card and give it to someone who books a service, you'll receive $10 off your next appointment!
Also, I want to apologize to the woman who was getting waxed after me. I left my bag in there, ran back, busted into the room because the door was open, and interrupted her appointment. Luckily you had an eyebrow wax, girl. Sorry about that!

I had my second visit with Maria last Tuesday. During my first visit she used sugar wax. This time she used a dark wax (with strips) for the front of the house, and hard wax for the interior and back of the house. Never ever double dips, always tweezes strays. She's the best!

I had a fantastic waxing experience here last Tuesday with Maria. Booking an appointment online was very convenient and easy. It does not ask for a credit card to hold the reservation, but their receptionists do call the day before to confirm your appointment time, and they send you an email confirmation as well. I was able to cancel a few hours before my appointment last week and they were very understanding. The last minute cancellation didn't boot me from the system and I was able to reschedule online for June 2nd.
Getting your nether regions ripped off is never a pleasant experience, but this is by far the painless Brazilian I have ever experienced (and keep in mind that my first experience was at the Aveda Institute, with no aspirin, so call me a sucker for pain). Earlier that day I had gotten my eyebrows threaded and they totally messed up my brows. Maria was able to correct most of the damage, taking care not to wax the area where the thread had cut into my skin. She gave me some tips on how to maintain them and advised me to grow them in so she can reshape them better on my next visit.
She works methodically and really observes as to which direction the hair grows. Now on her website it says she offers hard wax and sugaring for Brazilians but when I got there I didn't get to choose (I prefer hard wax). But the sugaring isn't bad either, as it doesn't stick to the skin. Everything is super sanitary; she doesn't double dip into the wax pot, and she will apply a soothing lotion after she finishes a section. She also tweezes strays and takes care of the ingrowns.
I was in and out in 30 minutes. It was a bit awkward to hand her cash in that little room but she says she does take credit cards as well. I paid $50 (excluding gratuity) for being a first time client and Maria said subsequent visits will be $45.
The salon itself is fairly busy and the interaction between the stylists and their clients seemed friendly and genuine, so I wouldn't mind getting my hair cut here, either.
I had booked the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage with no gender preference for therapist ("Artisan" as they're referred to at Qua). I typically get Swedish massages, but what drew me to this treatment was that it uses mainly long, continuous flowing strokes and compressions, which I generally prefer in massage. While this is not an authentic Lomi Lomi massage (the website said it's "based on Hawaiian concepts"), the therapists are trained by a renowned Hawaiian medicine specialist.
My therapist Carole promptly picked me up in the Tea Lounge and escorted me to the treatment room. When you check in at Qua, they don't have you fill out a consultation form like some spas. In the room, Carole asked me a few questions about any particular ailments/pains and then left the room so I could disrobe and get on the table. Now the treatment bed looks a bit hokey because of the big Hawaiian-esque blanket covering it, but the bed itself was very comfy and the therapist can adjust the bed mechanically. At first I was a bit concerned, as I had viewed videos of Lomi Lomi on youtube and they drape their clients a lot differently. For traditional Lomi Lomi, a piece of cloth is folded into a triangle and it basically covers your butt crack, or the client would wear a bikini bottom or thong. I was relieved that at Qua, they drape you like you would with a regular massage, although Carole assured me she can drape it Hawaiian-style, too.
This type of massage is extremely relaxing. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes Aromatherapy or Swedish massage who prefers light to medium pressure but not the super firm pressure associated with Deep Tissue. Carole massaged me from head to toe and also incorporated some stretches for my legs and arms. The massage oil she used smelled so good, too. Of course, working in a spa, I had to get me some spa gossips. Carole has been with the spa since it opened. Her favorite treatments are the water therapies (Vichy showers) and their Signature Hour Glass Treatment, where you book the time and can incorporate your choice of treatments for the time booked. I was also amazed to learn that Qua has 70 therapists! At least 27 of them are full-time, too.
75 minutes flew by quickly, and at the conclusion of your treatment, the therapist rings a bell to signal that your spa journey has ended. After checking to see if I had water, Carole left the room so I could change into my robe. At the sink there was a copy of my receipt, and it is here that you can choose to leave gratuity for your therapist and the spa attendants. The amount is billed to the credit card you used to pay with at check-in. If you would like to pay the gratuity with cash, I would imagine you would need to take it with you when you go into treatment or perhaps leave it at the front desk as you are leaving the spa. Your therapist will then lead you through the maze of the 50+ treatment rooms back to the spa, where you can continue relaxing in the jacuzzi, steam room, or Tea Lounge.
Carole was an amazing therapist and did a fantastic job helping me to relax. I also had a pain in my left hip/glute due to standing all day at work and she helped alleviate the pain. It was nice to walk around without a sharp pain in that area for last few weeks. Having a treatment here makes me wonder if it's worth the 3+ hour drive to visit their sister property in Atlantic City. Only one way to find out, then!

If you've never been to a spa before, and decide to go to Qua, be forewarned that your experience here will spoil you for other spas. Seriously, the spas in the City of Sin should be in a category of their own when it comes to rejuvenation and relaxation. Hell, I work in a spa, and while I think the spa I work in is one of the best in the DC area, the moment I stepped into Qua, I thought, "Wow, this place is amazing! It makes my spa look like [insert colorful language here]."
I called earlier this week to make appointments for Friday, October 30th. I work as a spa concierge for a hotel spa, so I have the very same job as the agent I spoke with. As such, I tend to be a bit more critical than your average spa guest. The phone call is your first point of contact with a spa, and therefore, is their chance to establish a positive "handshake" with a guest. The agent, while polite, kind of mumbled and spoke in a monotone voice. While I knew exactly what treatments I wanted and how much they cost, she didn't go over the price, or asked any questions to see if that treatment was right for me. This would never fly at my spa, because we have guests who book massages, not knowing the cost, only to get pissed at check-out and blame the concierge who made the booking, which results in management getting involved. She answered a few questions for me, but spent more time describing the amenities for the vanity instead of say, the heat and water areas. I hung up the phone and thought, "Wow, do they not get mystery shopped at Qua?" Also, there was no confirmation call the day before the treatment, so make sure you remember the date and time of your appointment.
Qua recommends arriving 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. Now at check-in, Vegas spas do things a bit differently. They make you pay for your treatment upfront. Gratuity for your therapist may be added after your treatment using the same credit card you used to pay. They give you a ticket in an envelope which you will present to the front desk staff when you enter the spa. They will ask you what size shoe you have, and after getting some slippers, will lead you on a tour of the facilities. The locker rooms are digi-locks, so you can pick a 4-digit combo. There is a private changing area next door if you're feeling modest.
There are three areas for heat and water. The Roman Baths contain three pools of varying temperatures. There's one for body temperature, a hot tub, and a cold plunge pool. In this area there is also a shower located in the center of the pools. There are also two shower stalls to rinse off. I particularly liked the heated stone loungers in this area. On one wall, you can turn on the jets and the showers and set how long you'd like them to run. There is also a lift available for disabled guests, which is great, but keep in mind that this area gets slippery easily.
The second area is the jacuzzi, which is located near the showers and vanity. The third area includes an herbal steam bath, a cedarwood dry sauna, and an arctic room. I was impressed with the arctic room--it wasn't too cold, especially after sitting in the steam room. I loved that there was an ice fountain and that foam floated down from the ceiling.
There are showers, restrooms, and vanities stocked with a variety of products and equipment. They supply things like soap, shampoo/conditioner, and lotion, but they don't have facial products or makeup. There is mouthwash, dental sets, razors, q-tips, tampons/pads, shower caps, etc.
The tea lounge is where your therapist will come to pick you up for your treatment. Qua offers a different tea menu for men and women. The variety of teas for women is greater than for men. The men's tea menu had a lot more traditional teas such as Silver Needle, while the women's tea menu had more flavored teas, like White Peach. You do not prepare your own tea--rather, a spa attendant will make it for you. Other food amenities include coffee (regular/decaf), pretzels, oranges, apples, iced tea, and a mini fridges stocked with little cans of juice and water. Bottled water is plentiful.
The staff here is extremely professional and will wait on you hand and foot. They do a fantastic job of keeping the facilities immaculate. Honestly, I cannot say enough good things about this spa, and I haven't even gotten to my review of my spa treatment yet! If you're in Vegas (and you're not pregnant or can't use heat/water facilities), you really should make it a point to stop here. You won't regret it!
This location is also fairly large. I think asides from Georgetown (DC), Orlando Airport, and Harvard Square (MA), this may be one of the largest Lush stores I have been in. They are open until midnight (!) so after seeing "The Lion King" we went back and bought a bunch of bath products. Many of the hotel rooms in this city have deep tubs, so you owe it to yourself to get to Lush and splurge on a bath bomb or bubble bar to unwind after a night of dancing and drinking. Or for the day after, a Brazened Honey fresh mask does wonders for the skin (do not use if you have dry or sensitive skin; ask your SA for advice before purchasing). Lush also has a very good return policy (similar to Sephora) as they want you to love the products you purchased.
Products here may not be as vibrant or super scented as other stores, but this is due to the climate of Vegas. The bath bombs I purchased were very nice compared to the one I got in NY. I also found their store to be clean and well-maintained, which is difficult as glitter will get everywhere in a Lush store. I thought I had rid myself of Lush since they priced themselves out of my budget (was a customer since '01) but this experience got me excited about trying new stuff from them. Do check them out if you happen to be in the area!

We walk in, and they are having a special on chocolate bars, buy 5 get 1 free. So while I'm deciding which bars to get, my friends grabs 6 Naga bars. They also have a delicious caramel with tupelo honey and bee pollen that is ONLY available in their Exotic Caramel box. And there's only one of them! How evil is that?!
There's a lot of choices and they do provide samples, but if you are indecisive as I am, a good choice is to get a sampler pack of the mini chocolate bars. Speaking of the devil, one of my favorite bars now comes in dark chocolate. Mo's Bacon Bar in dark chocolate... together at last!

In any case, our first night in Vegas lead us back to Paris. We were here on October 29th and were able to secure a table without reservations. There is outdoor seating available, which is great for people watching, but as it was kind of nippy, we opted to eat inside. Our server, according to my receipt, was Dia, who was cute, knowledgeable, and provided excellent service. I ordered the Steak au Poivre with brandy peppercorn sauce, and my friend ordered the Filet Mignon with merlot butter and red wine reduction. Now this is where I should really listen to my friend and heed her suggestions, as she is from Oklahoma and girl knows her beef. While my steak was good, the steaks here are cut real thin. I ordered mine to be cooked medium and truth be told, when it's a thin slice of meat, you are better off asking for medium rare. Her filet mignon, of course, tasted better than mine since hers is a better cut. The generous portion of fries are hand cut and also sliced thin, fried very crisp, and are reminiscent of the won ton crispy noodles you get when you order soup at Chinese restaurants. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you want your fries to have some taste of potato, then you are best off ordering one of the side dishes.
We had also ordered a carafe of sangria (billed here as "frangria"), and we both agreed that it is one of the better sangrias that we have ever tried, and one of us has been to Spain. At under $16, it was enough to provide a nice buzz and was cheaper than getting multiple cocktails or ordering a full bottle of wine. They do have wine by the glass, and if you are here in the fall, you can't go wrong with beaujolais nouveau. We didn't even have to pour it ourselves, as Dia was always on the mark and filled our glasses when it got half full.
For dessert, my friend ordered the warm chocolate tarte tatin with caramel sauce and whipped cream. I got the pear parfait with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. With tax, my portion of the meal was $34.48, excluding gratuity. I can definitely recommend this place, as it was fairly inexpensive, but the amount of food, plus the service, makes for a great value. If you're not in the mood for dinner, try having dessert out on the patio with sangria, wine, or cocktails. It's a good way to start (or end) your Vegas adventure.

Yechon was my first Korean food experience without the guidance of my sister, and my boyfriend's first time trying Korean food that isn't the frozen kalbi from Trader Joe's. Funny story, he was buying the frozen kalbi a couple of weeks ago and the cashier says to him, "Dude, these are good, but you should totally take a cute girl to a real Korean restaurant and try the real thing." So here we are!
I decided to order on the safe side and picked the kalbi and bulgogi. I wanted to try the pork belly but our server said we had to get two orders of that, not one. Oh well, maybe next time. Our food was cooked in the kitchen and came out in short order. The panchan are a decent variety of different flavors and textures. I am not really accustomed to Korean food so while I will definitely try things, there are some I don't really like (like kimchi, for example). I loved the basket of fresh greens and I don't know if I ate it right, but I did it Viet style and put a bit of rice, meat, and picked a random panchan and rolled it right up. It was gooood. My boyfriend thought the same as well. Two entrees were just the right amount of food for us with no leftovers to take home.
It was around midnight when we finished and the place started picking up. It was interesting to see what other people ordered, as we were sitting by the sidebar where they set the food before bringing it to the tables. The grilled fish dishes and dol bim bap in particular looked mighty tasty. I am convinced that the one of the servers has lost all feeling in "these three" fingers, otherwise, how can he just pick up those scorchingly hot metal bowls of rice and not even grimace?
It took about 20 minutes to get our check and that's after I flagged the server after he brought the check to the party sitting next door who came in way later than us. Also, they refilled our glasses when we were checking out and did not refill the panchan. But that's typical Asian service so I don't really much care. On the way out I noticed an ART or Fairfax Connector bus stop near the restaurant so I will have to see if it's worth it to make a daytrip there via public transit. But on the other hand, the beauty of this place is to go in the wee hours of the morning so maybe I should just pretend I didn't see it. We'll be back. And definitely leave your coat in the car if you don't want it to smell like meat.
However, the one thing that took me by surprise was when an EMPLOYEE asked me if I had any spare change to get home on the Metro! But we've all been there, so I gave him $0.80. After I gave him my change, he kind of stood there for a minute, expecting more, but left when I told him that was all I had. After he left, I thought about what had just occurred and got pissed because even when I was working retail and was utterly broke, I could always ask my co-workers or my manager if I could borrow a few dollars to get to and from work until payday. I would never think about panhandling the customers. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
If you are looking for a quick bite to eat and Old Ebbitt Grill is filled up, then this will do, but I question the professionalism of some of the staff there.
There are only three words to describe the Flamingo and they are "fabulously tacky" and "pink." In this day and age where the surrounding properties are trying to woo you with luxurious amenities, the Flamingo likes to kick it old school. Upon entering the hotel, your nose is attacked with the scent of suntan oil--an overwhelmingly sickeningly cloying fake coconut scent. It was like there was a stoner party and they tried to cover up the pot smell and bought 1000 coconut-scented candles from the Dollar Store. However, we counted our blessings, as we walked through Excalibur the other night and walked right back out because it stank of stale cigarettes from the past 10 years with a hint of raw sewage (I shit you not--pun intended).
The "Go" rooms are supposed to be the Flamingo's version of luxury, which is not saying much--that's like saying their standard rooms are Kraft Singles and the "Go" rooms are Kraft Deluxe--however, that extra serving of American cheese was oh-so-worth-it. The beds were comfortable, there were soft fluffy pillows, and there was a nice view of the pool (we were on the 21st floor). The hotel tried to get us to upgrade to a Strip for an extra $15/night. Fuck that, man! You want a view of the Strip? Step outside! There was a refrigerator in our room, oddly enough. Water pressure in the shower was good, and there are also these two ghetto knobs that sprayed sideways. I watched a couple of eps of "Law & Order" in the bathroom, but otherwise, they don't have many good channels. The bathtub is bigger than your standard size. The amenities are Gilcrist & Soames' shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner.
We also liked that we could walk to any of the other resorts. While we didn't take full advantage of the monorail, the fact that you can get to MGM in 10 minutes (versus 40 minutes by walking) is a time saver, even if it costs $5 one-way. Internet costs $13.99 for 24 hours and we did make use of it several times. Unfortunately we couldn't add more than one laptop. You can charge it to the room or to a credit card of your choice.
Reasons Why This is a 3-Star Property and Not a 4-Star
(AKA, I work for a 4-Star hotel and am being nitpicky)
-- Thin walls. I was woken up every day at 6:30am by guests. Once I was woken up by the sounds of sexin'. If you want soundproof rooms, stay at Caesars. For what it's worth, I wore earplugs.
-- Not replacing your light bulbs does not make you eco-friendly. I counted in my room, 7 bulbs that were out on the ceiling over the beds, 2 on the desk, 1 lamp that I couldn't turn on, and 2 out in the bathroom. Good thing we only slept here.
-- Housekeeping missed the sticky residue on the nightstands. There was a cigarette stain on one of the bedsheets.
-- Long check-in and understaffed front desk. Dude, if you are wearing a suit, don't roll up your jacket sleeves to show off your hairy arms. Gross!
-- In-room dining carts left in the hallways for hours
-- Someone stole the "V" from the Elevators sign on our floor.
-- OS failure in the TV in the elevators
-- Donny and Marie bobble heads are for sale in the gift shop. Donny's five-head plastered everywhere... the effect is slightly disturbing.
-- Offering an iPod dock as a "Go" room feature and letting you play your music on the DVD player but charging $20 if you lose the power cord. There was no power cord available and when I tried to use my own, I saw that the place to plug the USB was bent at an angle and therefore useless.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. We found it to be delightfully tacky. We would probably stay here again if the price was right. We did think about staying at MGM Grand since we ate at many of the restaurants there, but after seeing that the douchebag ratio was rather high at MGM Grand, we were secretly glad that the Flamingo is mostly douchebag free (however there is plenty of old people, especially cougars).

"Sorry, you can't buy anything here without a membership card."
"Even if it's just a gift?"
"That's right."
Fuck that shit! I wasn't going to spend $100, so I went back to Pentagon City Mall and bought a bunch of nice baby gifts from Nordstrom's.
