Gin Wan Chinese Restaurant

Category: Chinese

1.0 star rating

Two of us went to Gin Wan after tidepooling at Moss Beach.  The owner wasn't terribly rude ... but then again I'm originally from the east coast, so my threshold for rudeness is much higher than most California natives ;-)

Overall I thought the food was horrible and overpriced.  I swear the only "spices" they use are grease and salt.  They also nickel and dimed us to death on the bill.  For example, they charged us $3 for the rice in each of our entrées, and another $3 for a small pot of tea.

If I could rate less than 1 star I would.  Next time I'm in Half Moon Bay, I'll eat anywhere but here.

Wing's is a fun old restaurant.  I thought the private dining booths & wooden beads were interesting.  Loved the "OK Go" red velvet wallpaper ;-)

But seriously, the food was great!  They served the best hot-n-sour soup I have ever had.  The Mu Shu Vegetable was fantastic.  Huge portions at a very reasonable price.

Good food at very reasonable prices.  Went there for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and had the fresh spring rolls and eggplant ... delicious.  Their portions are very generous and I actually had to take half it home.

Food is delicious and the service is excellent.  I would have given it five stars if they had more vegetarian options.  Nice patio area for enjoying the fresh air and people watching while you eat.

Green

We were visiting Phoenix and found Green by searching for vegetarian places on Yelp.  The reviews were excellent, and for good reason.  The food was fantastic, the art & decor was very cool, and the prices were great.  I highly recommend this place to anyone (vegetarian or carnivore).

As stated in other reviews, the staff is friendly.  When we arrived for dinner, they already closed the kitchen (since it was after 9 PM).  Not only did they let us stay, but they made us a large amount of food.

We started with the spicy peanut tofu and the samosas, both had excellent flavor.  For dinner we had the drunken mushroom chicken and the singapore tofu.  The food was delicious.  However, if I had to suggest one change for the entrees, I would have liked it if they used less salt.  Another thing that impressed me was their organic green tea was brewed perfectly (some restaurants mess up their green tea by steeping too long or too hot ... but not them, it was just right).

The decor was very cool and I like the amount of art they had around the place.  One of my favorite features were the tabletops and the design that they had inked on the tops of most of the wooden tables.  Very cool!  If they ever decide to sell tables like that, I would certainly get in line :-)

Nijiya Market

Nijiya is an absolute gem in Japantown.  I walk to it on a regular basis to pick up everything from tea to shitaki mushrooms.  Their produce department is kind of small, but everything is fresh and they give stores like Whole Foods a run for the money.

I openly admit that I am not well versed in Japanese food, but the selection and quality at Nijiya makes it fun to experiment.  Check the front of the store to see if they have their free magazine Gochiso (http://www.nijiya.com/...) available in English, it is filled with recipes and directions on what to buy and how to prepare.

This place is another amazing find in San Jose's Japantown.  I live not far from this shop, and I never really knew what they sold inside.  Then a friend of mine brought over a box of manju one day and I was hooked.  My favorite is the white and brown inaka, absolutely delicious.

San Jose Tofu Company

This place hand makes what is quite possibly the absolute best tofu.  The store is very small and almost easy to miss, but well worth finding.  Ever since I was introduced to San Jose Tofu Co, I stopped buying packaged tofu from the grocery store because the taste just could not compare.  The weekday store hours are not the most convenient, but they are open on Saturday.

I used to visit Art Prostitute when they were located in Denton and always thought it was worth the 45 minute drive.  I was thrilled when they moved to their Dallas location on Commerce ST.  The artists that they exhibit may be a bit too edgy for some, but that is what I always liked about the place.  I agree with the previous reviewer, Brian and Mark are talented guys and always bring excellent artists to their gallery.

The Nasher Sculpture Center is an amazing gem in the Dallas Arts District.  For anyone visiting the area, this is a museum not to be missed.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for what Raymond Nasher has done for art in public spaces (think NorthPark Center, and Terminal D at the DFW airport).

I no longer live in Dallas (moved to the Bay Area in 2005) and have to say that I truly miss it (along with Art Prostitute, and the Fort Worth Modern).
