Zibetto Espresso Bar

Categories: Coffee & Tea, Pubs
Neighborhood: Theater District

5 star rating
 Update - 10/12/2009
More than 2.5 years later (and with a second location to manage), Zibetto still has my heart.  The fact that it was crowded (but not annoying bar-crowded) on a Tuesday afternoon when there are no less than 4 Starbucks within a BLOCK should tell you something about the quality of both the goods here and the experience that can be had at a true coffee bar.  Kudos to Anastasio for continuing to bless the folks on 6th b/t 56th & 57th with great coffee and snacks.

I am in love with Zibetto.  I love that Anastasio wears a tie tucked into his button down.  I love the flavor of the espresso AND the hot chocolate.  I love that there are small paninis in case I want a snack.  I love the quality of the beverages I get there.

This espresso bar is a gift to Manhattanites who enjoy real Italian coffee.  Once you drink something here, not many other cups will measure up.

Stop in, bring friends, enjoy your time at the bar.  You won't regret it.

Sunday morning and no one is happy...coffee not ready, the line's long...and a regular when I wanted decaf.

but I do love the fruit bowl with granola, even at $6.

Big fan...the locally sourced (and frequently grown in the restaurant's garden) food is delicious all around...

Not a huge fan of the atmosphere -- I felt a bit unsettled and uncomfortable.  The good gives off a very warm, inviting vibe, while the decor is on the stark side.

The lack of 5 stars is due to the lack of WCs...and waiting in line at the end of lunch behind 3 preschoolers was painful, especially after enjoying some delicious libations during my meal.

Reasons to see a movie at OPC:
Old school greeting by an usher before the film
Art-house flicks
Tix are $10 or $7.75 if you pre-buy a pack
Caramel Corn
Fabulous tea at concessions
Theatres so small it is like having a huge screen in your living room
Corned beef sandwiches before or after at Max's

Head through the plaza, past the fountain to the tiny cinema.

I cannot wait to have Zazie brunch...though after having a Zazie dinner, I nearly had to roll down Cole home as I was so full.  Zazie is a truly delightful place to have dinner.  Seasonal menu, cozy bistro feel, friendly staff -- what more could a gal ask for? Oh that's right, the hot-to-trot owner Jen wearing a red feather in her hair for Beaujolais night.

Always a FUN place to eat...delicious food...good wine list...and a decadent baked chocolat chaud.

Patxi's Chicago Pizza

Category: Pizza
Neighborhood: Hayes Valley

Paxti's is the only pizza place in SF (that I have found so far...) that makes me feel like I am home.  Home being Chicago.  Home being the place where thick, cheesy, sauce on top pizza was invented...cultivated...became an institution.

I will only order a large because I know that I will want this pizza for days to come.  Sweet, sweet pepperoni & black olive.  Great beers if you eat in.

The only reason Paxti's doesn't get 5 stars is the lack of delivery (and don't try to tell me that paying a delivery service half the cost of the pizza is delivery...not the same.  that is more like theft.)  I have trouble parking in the area most times of day, so I need to bring a friend to help me pick up my pie.

Lovely pie.

I am not cool enough to hang out at Philz...I know that.  I am way too...hmmm....just not cool.  But I love the coffee here.  LOVE it so much that I drive out of my way by a mile sometimes just to go to Philz (this location in particular although I have also been known to hit the Castro spot).

I don't have a particular blend that I order because I usually let my PhlizPhriendCoffeePerson create something for me.  I am never disappointed.

Blue Bottle Coffee Co.

I feel entertained when sitting at Blue Bottle.  I usually spend too much money (c'mon, I know it is like fine wine and fine chocolate, but coffee should not cost that much), but I love watching the machines at work.  Drip.  Drip.  Bunsen burn baby burn.  Drip.

I also love the industrial feel -- both inside and when gazing out on the usually-dirty-and-crawling-with-interesting-charac ters street.

I came on the first day it was open and have been back many times since then.  Just not every day.  Again, cost factor.

San Francisco Public Library - Main Branch

You can judge a lot about a city by its Main Branch (if you need proof, check out Chicago & New York...).  The Larkin Street Alpha Male Branch means that San Francisco rocks, but has a high homeless factor.  The reading rooms can be a bit stinky sometimes.  But the variety of materials and the helpful staff outshines some of its less-than-glamorous patrons.

Check out the schedule for great events for adults & kids alike (the children's section here is particularly good as is the selection of music for those who are into musical theatre and the like).

Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream

Bring it on now, bring it on now...give me my adult ice cream.  So far I have tried the Secret Breakfast, the Guinness Gingerbread, the Malted Dulce de Leche and the Vietnamese Blue Bottle Coffee (so good I went for it twice).  Damn girl, this place is good.  I have been impressed with each and every one -- I could almost wax poetic on them much like an oenophile.  Can't wait until they have more flavors and I am looking forward to a sundae there soon.

Not only do the cool kids at HS make great ice cream...they also serve tastings on REAL SPOONS.  Love it.  Tastes better.  Better for the environment.  The spoons are also tiny and cute.
